"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

True, the Trusted members would develop a sence of superiority, but at the same time that status could be acquired by someone who is not trusted. Unlike the 2 year rule, if you put some effort in, it would make a diffirence, there would be hope for anyone to become trusted.
There would always be idiots who abuse their status but then, wouldn't they simply become 'untrustworthy' and forfeit their position?
I wish there were more options...
But if you are "trusted," aren't you somewhat better? You get to be part of a special community of supposedly like-minded individuals. If anyone can get in with some hard work, it won't matter because the same problems will still occur. Flamers will just have to work harder to mess up the forum. And as they say: "The harder you work for something, the more you appreciate the result." The trouble-makers will not only have to work harder, but they'll feel they accomplished something by it, and will work hard again to cause more problems.
In short, if you make it too exclusive, you create a new problem, you segregate the forum into the "shining examples of good members" and the "unworthy" members, and you destroy the very sense of an open forum. If you make it too open, you defeat the purpose of having a special forum, since just about anyone will be able to get into it anyway. You might as well just make the forum available to everyone. The line surely exists, but if it does, it's too thin for me to see.
