About six months before the release fo Halo 2 I posted this exact question, and Shiska was very kind in answering it. I'm hoping he'll do the same now. :)

Will Halo 3 have "Legacy" style controls? To be honest I'm not fussed about game content or story or anything as I will buy the game regardless. The only thing that will stop me is lack of Legacy controls.

I vaguely recall someone (Peter Moore perhaps?) stating that all 360 games would support Legacy controls, but I'm also pretty certain I took that in the wrong context.

I've just had a look at Prey on 360 and yes, it looks like a great game, but I've just checked and there's no Legacy controls. So that's one lost sale right there from me.

So, Shishka, any chance of a confirmation?

(I'd actually email this to Frankie for his weekly questions, but I'm not sure of the address though)

Much appreciated,

El Lutzoid!

Edit: I've just noticed that this has been posted at 06:30am in the morning on your time, it's 14:30 here in the UK. I'll probably bump this in a couple of hours, hope you don't mind. :)

Just an FYI... Shiska may see this but if you are wanting the attention of a specific individual you can use the PM system.

Aye. They tend not to get answered all the time though. :)

It's nothing urgent... yet. When we're all a month away from launch, THEN it's urgent. ;)

He could, but then I wouldn't find out either. And, pardon my idiocy, but what are those?

What are what? Legacy controls?

Ordinary controls have move forwards/backwards and strafe left/right on the left analogue, and the right analogue is "free look", look up/down/left/right.

Legacy controls are effectivly what GoldenEye on the N64 gave to us: Move forwards/backwards and turn (look) left/right on the left stick, and look up and down, and strafe left and right on the right stick.

For most people it's a bizarre method of playing, but everyone used it in GoldenEye, and try as I might I simply cannot adjust to the standard controls.

No one should ever be afraid of looking stupid, so long as they are making a rational effort to expand their understanding.

You sure got that right. I played Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Duke Nukem 64 with Legacy controls. UT on Dreamcast, then eventually Halo CE wore that right out of me. I have tried to use it since, but anymore it feels like someone is pushing the dreaded standby button.

The funny thing is it's not in any way lesser or greater than the standard default controls. All that's happened is that two axi have been switched over.

It's all a matter of how a persons instincts work.

Anything you can do on default you can do on Legacy and vice versa. :)

man i hope their is legacy controls because that is all i use. i mean i could prolly do the switch to default but then that would take alot of time. legacy is the easiest to move around with. if halo 3 does not include it i might try and make the switch.(if i like halo 3)

legacy controls scare me.

Now the world has gone to bed,
Darkness won't engulf my head,
I can see by infra-red,
How I hate the night...

It better have it. Legacy is all I use. I made the switch temporarily to play Oblivion and GRAW. Then I really sucked at Halo. (which is my favorite) Now Im back with Legacy, now I am at home. Since the last 2 games had it, the 3rd must have it, comfirmation would be nice though...

It certainly would be, especially given that it's not, in anyway, a vital piece of info regarding the game.

TBH it's shocking how many games don't support this method of control. You yourself said that you played Oblivion using the "normal" controls... well, I really wanted to play Oblivion too, and guess what? Bye bye sale.

I refuse, *refuse*, to use "normal" controllers simply because that game company happens to think it's the best one that works.

I recall years and years ago an interview with one of the lead designers (Or a developer) for TIE vs X-Wing on the PC. When asked "Why was mouse support dropped?" (As it was origianlly) he stated "Because we thnk the game is played better on joystick"

What ARROGANCE!!

I was absolutly seathing with rage when I read that one. I cared a lot for TIE Fighter, so to hear I couldn't play the "sequel" (cos I'm a mouse man for space sims, not a joystick user at all)

Even worse, if only 1% of users don't buy Halo 3 because of the control methods, then that is a LOT of lost sales when you're dealing with such a massive title.

So please Bungie, don't let arrogance stand in the way of making every Legacy user dreams come true. After all, it surely cannot be THAT hard to program in?

Halo 3 (31st), ODST (14th) and Reach (4th) Mythic Conqueror. (Mythic is Solo, Legendary, All skulls on + scoring on and no deaths/saves).

Game developers should always try to cater for as large and audience as possible without disintigrating the core of their game. One (seemingly) pretty obvious way to do this is to support a variety of control methods. Cus,,like you said, people who came from playing games like Goldeneye on the N64 (which is a great game btw, i have it! somewhere) can easily get into the game by using a familiar control scheme.

It saddens me when game developers don't try their best in this department. Because its not hard.

That's called Boxer IIRC. My cousin uses that to great effect.

@ RC Master: I completely agree. Don't change the way the game plays, just allow change to teh way the game IS played. Although it was fussy to do, TimeSplitters 2 had the bext control changing system, as you could assign any control to any button. So you could walk up with X, fire with left analogue stick and jump with the right trigger.

You know... if you wanted to. ;)

Actually that is greenthumb not boxer. When you melee with the right thumbstick and scope with the B that's greenthumb. Boxer is meleeing with the L button and grenading with the B button.
