Actually, as far as I know, I'm pretty sure you are allowed to make one, and only one, copy for backup purposes only. I know for music CDs you can burn a copy of that for backup, so I would assume that it would apply to other media as well.

The thing is if you sell or give your copy away, you are legally obligated to destroy the backup. Obviously you are also not allowed to burn copies and give them away or sell them.
