now before I begin, I beg you not to falme me or call me a n00b or shoot me. *Hides behind bulletproof glass* Ok, I don't know much about ping, except that when I played Halo it was between 100-300 most of the time. But what do those numbers mean? What do they represent? The only other thing I know is that if it gets to 900 or above things start getting very laggy and people get very angry at you. So can someone please tell me what these numbers mean???

YOU STUPID ASS NOOB> GO KILL YOURSELF. OMG :YOU DONT KNOW WHAT PING IS HAHAHAHA.

just kidding, i thought I'd try to break the ice. Dude I hate how people have to ask not to be flamed when they ask a qestion. All of those -blam!-s on here should just leave. Dont worry man I'll try to help as much as I can.

Anyway ping is basically the time it takes for info from you to be sent to the server and back. I think its measured in miliseconds, not entirely sure though. Usually anything below 100 is considered playable by me, but I prefer it to be 60 or below. I tried to keep it simple, did you understand what I was saying?

The lower the ping the better (as long as it's not 0). It's the number of milliseconds it takes to transfer data from you to the server and back. If your ping is 33-100, that's pretty good enough to play decently.

Another add-on: The higher the ping, the more you need to lead your shots in order to score a hit. The lower the ping, the less you need to lead. If you're host, the ping is zero, so you don't need to lead at all: your shots go exactly where you want them to.

Right, but it will still be difficult if people warp on a server even if you're the host and have no lag. It doesn't matter how fast a connection you have, and if you have no lag, if people use dial-up to play on your server, they're going to work.

I was playing this mach once where everyone in the mach had like 3000 ping next to my 160. God it was so laggy and soo easy to trash them. But even though you know this ping is basicly the time it takes for information to get back and forth between the server and yourself. Try and make sure you find something with low ping (preferably 1).

its like how long it takes for each end of a connection to communicate wit each other in like miliseconds. if it says it you have 100 ping then that means it takes 100 miliseconds for your pc to comunicate with the host's pc.

Yeah, PING is basically the strength of the network between you and the server. I'm stretching a little, but I'd go no higher than 200 or so. You don't want to be above 300. I once saw this guy with over 2000 PING. Yeah, pretty -blam!-ing laggy! But anyway, try to stay below the 150-200 mark.

I know you need a different server to get a lower Ping but how does one go about doing that?

Do you need a cable modem?

A cable modem is the best to go. To go to another server, just quit that game you're in, go to Multiplayer, Join Internet Game, and hit get list. The server's PING should be shown on the right hand side, I believe. If not, it will be at the rules ticker at the bottom. The lower the better. Different modems can take different amounts. High Speed Cable, like Comcast can have pretty much the maximum, 16. There are lower cable speeds that can take 12 or ten. DSL should only take about eight or so. And if you have dial up, don't even think about it.

Everyone else has pretty much covered what ping is.

One thing I've found is that if everyone's ping is high it's not as bad as when just a couple of people have high ping. 300-500 ping can be playable if it's uniform.
