I'm not sure about you guys, but I've had more than my share of bait n' switch links, including vile pictures and even viruses.

I've also noticed that most of these have been produced by new users (not even a day old).

So, what I'm saying is New Users should have to not only wait for making a new thread, but making new post too... for 24 hours, or even 2 days, just so they might feel less mischievious that day...

  • 07.14.2006 10:19 PM PDT

While that would most certainly be good, I highly doubt it'll happen.

Whats the point of having an account if you can't post? Sure there are some users that create multiple accounts that they use to spam the forums, but most new user don't. Its a good thing they canot start a new thread right away, but taking away their ability to post is just wrong. I would love to read that message. "Thank you for creating an account with us a Bungie.net. Now come back in two days becuse you cant do anything here yet. Thank you for your time"

I can understand where you are comming from, but your plan wouldn't do much good. Trolls would still create alt accounts to spam the forums with. Making some one wait for two days until they can take advantage of the account they created is not right.

(10:19:49 PM) Scruss: oh and pezza, i saw what you did to that cat
(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

Im pretty sure they would act vile anyway, so people come here to cause grief.

While it would most likely decrease forum-related shenanigans, I doubt new "good" users would take to it well.

Wait, don't new Users already have to wait 24 hours until they can post a new thread? Maybe adding another day onto that would be ok.

But he's also saying they shouldn't be able to post in that same period.

We would, except A) these new members are pretty important for a multitude of reasons, and B) we were all new members once, weren't we?

Aha! And therein lies the problem! We must fight on multiple fronts! We must repel the attacks from the new members (or new accounts) that spam and flame, while simultaneously allowing the new members (or new accounts) who are going to be helpful and constructive members to participate from the moment they make their account. If there is a line where the perfect solution lies, I cannot see it.

I thought they do? It's a 24 hour long one. Not nearly enough though. If possible bungie should make it a week or so.

New users can't make new topics for the first 24 hours, but they can post. The idea of the thread is that we reduce the problems if we don't allow new members to post for a 24 hour period. Some have even suggested longer periods.

Most of the time these "new users" are people who already have an account but don't want to risk a blacklist on their normal account so they go ahead and make a new one for spamming purposes. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that if one of those accounts gets blacklisted 'The Soul' uses their ISP number and blacklists all accounts connected to that banned account. So if you just report these violations to moderators the fake new users should get their comeuppance.

I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

It would be more effective to check the link before clicking, and then if it is a bad link to not post in the thread and to report it to a mod...

Don't forget to go to tiny url's website and turn on the preview link function. That way you can see where it is going to take you.

As a matter of fact I do, but yet they seem to do it at t time when none are on.

Does it really help to blacklist the jerk just so he can create a brand new one 5 seconds later?

Does it really help to punish brand new members just so we can postpone a spammer's attacks for a couple of days?

Spam accounts are nothing new buddy. Which is why we have (and always will need) Moderators on Bungie.net. They seem to keep spam accounts in check so I don't see why a new system should be created.

Besides, dealing with spam accounts is somewhat common sense. I mean here is the example:
You see a brand new user with the default avater posting a link to a pic. The replies all say "OMG don't click on that link, it's a bad pic!", and hovering your cursor over the link shows that it is from an XXX website. Do you:
* Ignore the link (and thread) and get on with your life, reporting the thread to a moderator?
Or
* Click the link, scar your mind, and then complain on the main Bnet forum?

That's the thing. Some XXX sites aren't obvious or don't give their purpose away. Say something like the site that was posted a while back ago in the flood. (Site name has something to do with lemons) No one knew about those. So alot of the time you are in the dark as of what you are clicking on.

If I don't know about the link, I wait for someone else to click it, or warn other people, or contact a moderator.

well...I think there should be a Sticky thread that warns new users of what links not to click on and give a portion of the URL...like omgwow.com...btw, don't go there. We need a list of shock site..although this could be used for evil, stickied or at least something to warn new members or members in general of newer shock sites.
