This belongs in the Multiplayer Ideas Thread
I have a nice writeup about just this topic in that thread.. But it's lost to me right now, so I'll just post it here too..
---------------
I'd like to make a point to everyone that say "Please don't put ranks in Halo 3 due to it causing cheaters"
First off, let's go over the mindset of a cheater. Is it because of rank? Maybe a little, but not after the "You mod, you're banned after 10 games." Cheaters cheat because it gives them the feeling of being superior to you. It has little to do with rank. Cheaters are abundant in every game, regardless of ladders or no ladders. ("Leaderboards")
When that "wee little 13 year old" laughs in your face, it's only because his cheating makes him feel superior. They usually do it to make up for lacking skill. I'm sure loads of you have played cheaters that weren't cheating when you played them... They're usually pretty terrible players. Cheating actually decreases skill.
Here's the real problem: That cheater thinks he's better than you, and because some people get so frustrated over it, it's all worth while to them. They're just trolls. Bullies. And everyone in the community that whines (the real whining, not just complaining slightly), just makes it worse. They're like vampires, feeding off your misery.
Secondly, RANKS do not cause cheaters. Dishonesty causes cheaters.
I love when games are fair, regardless of winning or losing. If the other team didn't cheat, (and of course, weren't jerks) then "Good Game!". Kudos to them, they've beaten me.
The real point here.. I'd love to see ranks return, I'd love to be able to brag about my level, and I'd love to be able to see my own achievement against other players, world-wide. Just because a few unsupervised children (and some very immature adults who act like children) ruin a few games, why get rid of levels? In doing that, Bungie has shown the cheaters they've won.
Now onto the really big deal that makes it even better; Halo 3 and the Xbox 360. Not only will Bungie be detecting cheaters sooner and easier than ever before, the 360 will also be an incredible machine for someone to modify. The level of modding on the 360 (currently) isn't easily done. Your average "13 year old" couldn't do it without the help of someone with real know-how.
Let's hear it for ranks on Halo 3?
