Interview with Xlink

Maxconsole.com: Hello, may you introduce yourself?

TheDaddy: Hi. TD here from the Xlink Crew. Fresh from a week of solid BBQ, liquor and theme parks J

Maxconsole.com: When did you have the idea to make Xlink?

TheDaddy: It was about 4 month back now, texlink (other dev. guy) got an xbox, and we wanted to try out some games online. We had a look at the other offerings, but found them difficult to work with. So we made the first Xlink - which was a single-form app that you had to type IP addresses into. From there, 4 or 5 people get it off us, and liked its clean, simple UI - so we decided to make a project out if it

Maxconsole.com: What are the requirements for Xlink?

TheDaddy: Requirements on the PC side are minimal, if you are running Windows on it, you can run Xlink. Apart from that, you need an Internet connection and an xbox. You need to have the xbox hooked up to the PC LAN style...

Broadband is strongly recommended, but 56k users should have no problem at all running half of the games on the list.

And of course xlink only works with games which have the system-link feature

Maxconsole.com: what are the main features of Xlink?

TheDaddy: Well, like the other tunnels (XBC / GameSpy etc.) it allows you to play Xbox games online. It's main advantages are that it splits the organization of gaming into 3 distinct "modes" - which suit different needs which gamers may have. For example, I play Ghost Recon with texlink almost every day - and we just play with the 2 of us, so using Messenger mode we can get connected in less than 5 seconds, and the match is private. Sometimes though, we play stuff like MM3 and want more people - so we make a "Room" for the game - so others can join at will.

Also, of all the tunnel apps out there, XLink has the fastest "packet" stream engine and uses a few tricks, which reduce lag. We've also got a voice-over-ip facility build directly into the app - which works well for games that don’t support the headset.

Maxconsole.com: what are the upcoming features of Xlink?

TheDaddy: The RC2 client fixes loads of little problems with the RC1 version, and adds, amongst other things, support for homebrew games, more flexible voice support, massively improved Messenger / Rooms mode, MUCH faster communication with the XServer, support for users behind unconfigurable proxies (like university NAT's) and, of course, Bo-XLink support.

Maxconsole.com: Now that you mention it, what is this Bo-Xlink Exactly?

TheDaddy: Bo-XLink is an application which runs from your Xbox itself. It provides similar functionality to the PC client, and allows you to control your online gaming completely from the xbox itself - no need to run to the PC every time you want to switch games etc. Features include text chatting, using the pad or keyboard, communicator support, skins etc.

Maxconsole.com: Oh that sounds great, in what state is it right now?

TheDaddy: Its basically finished, and undergoing massive amounts of testing. We're hoping to get a release out to everyone very soon - but each time we get close, we keep thinking of more stuff to add. Also, a fair bit of our time has been spent on creating the OpenXL classes in parallel with the bo-xlink / Xlink apps - which means that other developers will he able to use bo-xlink's sweet sugar directly in their apps from the word go. Numerous homebrew game developers and one dashboard crew have already agreed to integrate OpenXL into their creations.

Maxconsole.com: So about when will we be able to test it out for ourselves?

TheDaddy: Well, this upcoming week has been set aside for completion of the code, and it we can get all the docs / help / new website stuff up, you should have something round about the 16th August.

Maxconsole.com: This sounds amazing, are there any future plans you can let us have a peek on?

TheDaddy: Well, we've been having an ongoing flame war with XBC and their operators. So expect a bit of a bombshell to be dropped on them in the very near future ;) Apart from that, I would keep an eye on future Avalaunch releases and any new versions of Lantus's excellent game ports.

Maxconsole.com: This is just great news, that explains why you guys have been so quiet in the past, we thank you for the interview and if you have anything left to say for the readers, here's your chance

TheDaddy: There are a couple of things actually. Firstly, we know that this project is overrunning - and has been for quite some time now. All we can say is that we're still working on it 100%, and we think you're going to be happy with the finished article. Secondly, we'd just like to get a big shout for all the people from other dev crews who are supporting us through this - without the external help we've been getting, this thing probably wouldn’t be happening.

X-Link is pretty unpopular. It's good if you don't live in the US, as if XBConnect goes does (as it did on Saturday) then you can get a PAL game going. GameSpy Tunnel seems to be only populated by NTSC Xboxes.
