Subject: Will Halo 3 intergrate euphoria technology? Bungie please read.

Just remember... I keep it real...

A while back I remeber reading that "Euphoria" is basically the ragdoll effects in live play. You don't have to die to see your body fly back and bounce on the surrounding objects after getting hit by a vehicle. Just watch the video, some one gave a link above. The AI told the person to go somewhere and "Euphoria" make it look realistic.

Thats a good way to picture it.
It consists of causes, reactions, Keyframes, and Ragdolls in a barrel of Awesome with a Blend filter over it.

You should watch the vid in the link if you want to see it in action. I think that the kicks and the fall off the ledge shows it very well. As mentioned it blends in with the same kick action, and from then to whenever the person gets up, it completely interacts with the surrounding environment such as grabing ledges and recoiling etc.

And with that system in place, you could create some hilarious instances.. As I've said before, a hunter smashing into a wall a recoiling or temporarily getting flattened against it. Or as Crow said, an elite rolling (more like crashing) into a box, only to be temporarily stunned as he gets up in anger.

Just remember... I keep it real...

In the video there is an example of a football game. The AI make the player tackle, while Euphoria does the life-like ragdoll effects of the actual hit. The body caves in on where the hit came from , and then lands accoringly, and then stand up in a logical and natural way. If you attempted the hit again it would look differently, in real life you can't tackle someone and see the exact same motions as before.

If you watch carefully.
When the football player tackles the other. It actually is set to grab and lock its hands around the character. Which makes it look really realistic.

Well in Halo 2 wasn't the same idea incorporated except there was no Ragdoll animation? Because I remember playing and shooting an Elite in the stomach. and he would keel over and then recover. Another situation was when I shot an Elite in the right soulder, and he would stumble back with his shoulder jolting backwards. I am sure with the new power of the 360, Bungie will take this idea and make it better.

The only thing is, in the video, I can't think of too many situation in which the Ragdoll animation would be useful. Besides meeles, where would it be used?

Bungie did a good job like that.
But those were keyframed animations combined with some good animating.
This would make it so the NPC collided with the environment when grabbing its shoulder. as well as other stuff depending on how detailed they got with it.

Heres an example I made.

You see an Elite up ahead. You fire a rocket at him. It zooms past him and the rushing air causes him to loose his balance. You hop in a Warthog in a hope to run him over. The first attempt, you hit him and he rolls off the side of the Warthog and is sent flying to the side while trying to grab the warthog again. You go for a second attempt, this time you clip him and his leg flys out at an unusual angle while his head ricochets off the windscreen, as he is dragged under the tyre.

Haha, bit of action there.

Just remember... I keep it real...

I'm just waiting for the video game to be just an entertaining as real life. You just sitting there and watch the game just as if it was live in a stadium filled with a ton of people. Another usefull thing with Euphoria what it would do with scenery or spectators. If a car hit a tree then the tree could in turn be bent sideways till the end of the game. Or fans in the crowd could effect differently to each play on the field. No more short animated clips to represent the fans. Now people can be moving in a free form.

Overall, it would create life like environments and movement. What the enemy would do when it saw you wouldn't change, but how it looked would.

You must not underestimate Bungie's animators and programmers..
A hit to the chest? "Do <this> animation." A hit to the foot? "Do <this> one." They have hundreds of animations. They really made the game immersive, Endorphin would just blow my mind.

OMG, Could you imagine Hitting NPC's and players with the hogs.
Having them roll off the hoods.
That would be amazing.

Yeah, it is pretty good how it is now but Euphoria will enhance it to a new level of brilliance. I'm sure Bungie's animators wouldn't mind being one of the few that are actually using it now anyway.

I don't think they will have to borrow some other company's "engine."
Halo 2's physics engine isn't made by them..it's the Havok engine. Look it up on their website ;)

One question I have is wil it be practicle to start using it now? Have many animations already been completed?

Very good examples and now I agree that it would be awesome. The only thing is, in Multiplayer, it would have to be limited. Example: say Euphoria was used in Halo 2. On Coagualtion, if Warthogs were used to run over the trees by the one portal, that would eliminate the cover for that team. Now, the other portal is surrounded by rocks which are not easily broken by a Warthog. The game would become unbalanced due to lack of cover for one of the teams. Now this can be fixed by making that tree unbreakable or something to that effect. I guess it is fixable, but there are things that must be made exception to so that the game could be balanced.

If anyone doesn't understand what I am saying tell me and I will retype this.

Thats the Cool part about Euphoria.
It blends together those animations that have already been made. With physics based ragdoll physics.

And the Comment about having them be able to shoot back is a good point.
Obviously it would be within the same realms as it is in Halo 2.
And Elite will only grab its shoulder when its shot with something like the BR while its shields are down.
And for the other extremes. It would likely only happen with the stronger weapons.

Muffin, Eurporia would only be used for characters and physics-based objects. The trees would not be affected. I do perfectly understand what you are saying.

Yeah I agree, there would be a certain extent to which it became unbalanced. Theres also the issue of the effects of attacks of you, the player. Wether they be as much as would happen to NPC is an issue, for example you wouldnt really want to be rolling over the hood of a Warthog in first person view.

I agree.
I think that it wouldn't play over so well in Multiplayer.
But as far as single player. I think it would be fantastic.

FEAR has a system similar to Euphoria.
and it looks awesome.
The only questions of practical involves the Multiplayer.
I wouldn't want to roll in first person. But if I was hit by the warthog and Died, then it would look good.
