I speak for myself, and possibly others, when I say that Halo pc was much more fun than halo 2. Despite its many downsides (extreme lag, bad controls, crappy communication, etc), my overall gaming experience was much better that it ever was in halo 2. Sure halo 2 has less lag, better graphics, new abilities, ranks, new vehicles, and matchmaking, but it just isn't as much fun. In halo PC, the maps were large and supported intense 8v8 vehicle filled CTF and slayer games. Game servers booted griefers, laggers, cheaters, and anyone else ruining the fun. Filters made games were easy to find, and quitters couldn't ruin them, because they filled back up instantly. You also never had to play a gametype on a map that you didn't like, because you chose what game you joined. Also the ability to make custom maps and modifications added endless hours of replayability as well.
The matchmaking in halo 2 is fun, but it feels more like a competition to gain rank and show it off more than a video game. People only play to go up in levels, and because of that we have intense cheating. Games also take a while to join, and once you are in, people have already quit. The concept is good, but it doesn't work due to human nature.
I have seen this idea pitched before, and shot down. "There are too many players to have a game list and servers" they say. Well here is a solution, add a regional filter that shows you games of people relatively close to you.
I feel that ultimately bungie will stick with Match Making, as it works better with the average, non-hardcore gamer, and is more profitable, but wanted to share my opinion, seeing as how this is a forum.
