now look.. dont know you guys but personnaly in the MC levels in H2 I found that "english-talking" elites were seriously out of place.. I mean, I kinda missed the ol days when the eltes would just say the classic "wort, wort, wort" and you would hear them talking in their native language... also some of the elite voices in H2 were just dumb to hear (in my opinion)

with Arby is OK because hes..... an elite (duh).... and he can understand them but with the mc missions I would say that they should bring the old talking elites

Maybe you mates will say that MC has a built in translator and bla bla bla... but besides that I only think the old talking elites brought a much cooler feel to the fights... what do you guys think??

Yeah, i made a thread like this a long time ago. I wish that we didnt know all of their language and that we could actually hear more of the covenant. Still, its the game designers desire for us to understand them...all well.

I think that it is phisically impossible for an Elite to speak english because they have four lips and no toungue, but I think they should speak their language including the famous wort, wort, wort and Instead just add subtitles so we know what they are saying, only during cutscenes should they add the subtitles though not during gameplay!!!

  • 07.16.2006 3:55 PM PDT

ya u're right they should talk in their native language in H3

What I would have preferred, at least for the cut-scenes were sub-titles. Humanizing the aliens was a huge mistake. If there's anything important... Cortana will translate. For example, "Look out chief, they're planning to flank you." or more simply, "Grenade! Watch out!"

yea i miss da classic "wort wort wort" and thnk that they should bring back more of the elite language just so we can hear it. I reckon that they should still speak english to though, cos its wicked listening to the elites give orders like "maintain discipline" and "hold the line" or sumthing like that anyway.

  • 07.16.2006 4:12 PM PDT

When the hammer falls, which will it strike, the Forge? Or the Anvil?

wort wort wort just means go go go only backwords, but everyone knows that...

they reason why they talk english is because of your new armor, it comes with a translator, but you all dont read the instruction manuals now do you, gotta just plow strait into the game

Don't be a fool. Of course I read the entire manual. What else was I supposed to do on the twenty minute ride back to my place at 1:30 in the morning?

The fact that you claim there's a translator only makes your argument worse. I ask you, why does the translator give alien's English accents or add the sylistic lilt of an old man? That makes absolutely no sense at all.

I personally pretend there is no translator and that Cortana is translating Covenant speech in real time... that way she's adding the oddball accents and humanistic stylings as she whims. It's the only thing that makes any sort of sense.

The Covenant have known Earth Language since they attacked Harvest. When they broadcasted a message that said "Your destruction is the will of the Gods, and we, are their instrament."

While it is true Chief has Translation Equitment, you must remeber that the Covenant (at least some of the Covenant) know Earth (english) language.

Although I liked it when they spoke in native Sangheili. I think a good mix of both is in order.

English, Speaking Elites

And no they dont speak english, none of the covenant do, Master Cheif has a build in translator in his helmet, all the Spartans do, most of the covenant probably do too. Its in the books.

Yes, they speak English. So? It's a universal language now. It would be retarded if the Elites spoke their own language. I can picture it now: From the beginning: "Yes. They called it the Pillar of Autumn"="Arf arf gleep wort woof woof mep" Strange enough, I once saw this pre-Halo 2 trailer in French of which Truth snarls "No enemy has ever resisted our might" in the very beginning. French sounds like a perfect alien language!(no offense against the French).

And Elites still say "Wort Wort Wort".

There is a very good reason the Elites speak English: The amount of space available on a disk. All that audio takes up a huge amount of it. Would the elites be speaking their native language when you are the chief, and English when you are the Arbiter, it would double the amount of data, just for elites alone.
The reason for not choosing the elites and such to be speaking their native language, is due to the fact people rather listen, than read subtitles. Although subtitles work during cut scenes, it becomes a problem during gameplay. When Half-jaw is telling you something, and your in the middle of a fight, it becomes difficult to be reading subtitles, thus you would miss great parts of the story.
having the elites speak English, simply is a logical choice.

besides, I never hear trekkies complain about the fact that aliens in Star Trek manage to speak English.

Yeah, because those cutscenes would make so much sense if you couldn't understand it.

One more time, for emphasis.

The Covenant (in part) already know how to speak Earth (English) Language. They did 27 years prior, during the Harvest Incident. Yes, humans had a basic understanding of Covenant Language. Yes, Cortana increased the usefulness of the translation software. Yes, Chief does have translation software. Yes, Cortana most likely still complimeneted any translation software Chief may have had (Halo 2 cutscenes, you know the ones).
