Yea but during the cutscenes when you are the Arbiter the Master Chief is nowhere around yet they are still speaking english with eachother!!

Yeah, because those cutscenes would make so much sense if you couldn't understand it.

One more time, for emphasis.

The Covenant (in part) already know how to speak Earth (English) Language. They did 27 years prior, during the Harvest Incident. Yes, humans had a basic understanding of Covenant Language. Yes, Cortana increased the usefulness of the translation software. Yes, Chief does have translation software. Yes, Cortana most likely still complimeneted any translation software Chief may have had (Halo 2 cutscenes, you know the ones).

Im telling you, its impossible to speak english with 4 lips and no tongue, and how many times do I have to say just add subtitles, theres no need for elites to be speaking english, besides dont you think that they would prefer there own language than that of the Enemy!!!
Sure he might have a Translator but during the cutscene on the first arbiter mission, Master Cheif wasnt even there, they might as well just speak there own language when hes not around!!!!

You miss a few points.

1) There aren't just Elites, but also Brutes and Prophets. And I'm sure they all have their own language. Let's do it your way. have them all speak in their own language, and then just use subtitles. You know what happens to the audio? it gets messed up. Due to fact you can't understand a word of it. And you have to read it, it becomes hard to attach the subtitles to the characters, thus making the scenes dull and boring.

2) Once again: disk space. Yes, with cutscenes it doesn't matter. However, try this: Have them speak their own language during the cut scenes, but English during the actual game. Suddenly it becomes difficult to attach a voice to a character. Although it doesn't really matter when you actually see them, a lot of talking happens over the com channel. because of that you will be hearing unknown voices, making you wonder just who the hell is talking.

Although I'd really like for the Elites to go back to their old way of speaking, I can handle it if they spoke English in H3.

Just please, give them back the VOICE they had in the original, I hated how retarded they sounded in H2, it was ridiculous.

now look.. dont know you guys but personnaly in the MC levels in H2 I found that "english-talking" elites were seriously out of place.. I mean, I kinda missed the ol days when the eltes would just say the classic "wort, wort, wort" and you would hear them talking in their native language... also some of the elite voices in H2 were just dumb to hear (in my opinion)

with Arby is OK because hes..... an elite (duh).... and he can understand them but with the mc missions I would say that they should bring the old talking elites

Maybe you mates will say that MC has a built in translator and bla bla bla... but besides that I only think the old talking elites brought a much cooler feel to the fights... what do you guys think??
They changed the way Elites talk for story.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

wort wort wort just means go go go only backwords, but everyone knows that...

they reason why they talk english is because of your new armor, it comes with a translator, but you all dont read the instruction manuals now do you, gotta just plow strait into the game

That is not true, how could "Seargent Johnson" uderstand them?

Let alone how could the :Master Chief" be on High Charity translating what the Arbiter is saing while he is in New Mombasa fighting the Covenant?

The Covenant allready knew how to speak english, if you remember reading the message in "The Fall Of Reach" at "Harvest".

"You Are an afront to the gods, and we are there instrament"

And guess what, it is made clear to the Master Chief that it was not a translation an admiral stated that "they obvioulsy were studying us for sometime".

So what does this mean?

It means that the Covenant always knew how to speak English.

Bungie just did not have time to implement it in Halo 1.

I agree and disagree.

I agree that Elites(or brutes) shouldnt be able to speak english, also even if they could why would they in battle,Wouldnt they speak their tactics in elite talk to hide thier plans?

I disagree that we should have to hear their language because as the mc you can have a translater and as the arbiter he hears elite talk but since he is an elite he understands and is translated through him to us as players

Not by the mytho's the creators have placed forth. For all we know, they have a human type apendage in their throats that is able to make the sounds required for Earth Language. As far as the cutscene idea goes, stop drinking the Mountain Dew it's making you less than thoughtful. I don't want to read any subtitles, and neither do a lot of people, it would just complicate things.

Besides which, those aren't lips. They're mandibles.

You face an opponent who has never known defeat, who laughs in foreign tongues at your efforts to survive. This is Reply suicide.

"Oh Molly Connoly ruined my life, I thought the world should know."
Say Anything - Every Man Has A Molly

I've seen this post somewhere before...

Here's the thing.

The Chief DOES have built in Translators. He can translate SOME of what he hears with them, but not all of it. I like being able to know what it is they're saying.

But...

If you read the book "The Flood", it turns out that the Elites CAN speak our language anyway. It's difficult for them and strange for them, but they can speak it.

So even without the translators... They could possibly speak our language.

They just choose not to most of the time, because we are heretics.

I didn't mind NOT understanding them... But I also don't mind NOW BEING ABLE to understand them.

After all, if we can translate barks and growls from the Grunts, what's so hard about the Elite's Language?

And understanding your enemy is the key to knowing how to defeat him. What I mean is... If you can hear your enemy's battle plans while in a firefight, because you know his language... You can defeat him.

So in keeping with the storyline as well as intelligence, even in ONI...

We can understand them now.

I just wish we could understand some of the OTHER Covenant now. Like the Jackals.

maybe we should just consider a possiblity: maybe Bungie made them speak english for our convinience and to help reinforce the whole "humanistic side of the covenant" plot point, rather than making them speak english because plot consistency or exposition requires them to. In other words, they just decided to do it because it solved a lot of problems even though it may not make total sense in the plot.

And as for the stupid quesiton of why Johnson can understand them...

All UNSC personnel have neural implants. All kinds of information can be uploaded into them and through them. So who's to say that Johnson didn't get the same translation software as the Chief?

I mean... it ONLY makes sense.

Okay dumbass, the Elites apparently speak better English than you do, because it's not "ELITES TALKIN ENGLISH!", it's "ELITES SPEAKING ENGLISH!"

The Covenant have known Earth Language since they attacked Harvest. When they broadcasted a message that said "Your destruction is the will of the Gods, and we, are their instrament."

While it is true Chief has Translation Equitment, you must remeber that the Covenant (at least some of the Covenant) know Earth (english) language.

Although I liked it when they spoke in native Sangheili. I think a good mix of both is in order.
Do you wanna hear what the Elites sound like when they attempt to speak our language?

Watch this video..it's at the very end.

However, watch the whole thing..you'll see some of the things from Halo 2 (Gauss Hogs, Spectres, etc.) back when they were supposed to be in the original Halo.

Enjoy.

Brutes arent as intimidating when they talk to you

Only the dead live to see the end of war

You may talk of gin and beer when your riding safe out here, and lick the penny aldorshotin. But when it comes to slaughter you may do your work on water, and lick the bloomin boots of him thats got it.

My first clan match http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStats.aspx?gameID=273740390&a mp;player=bluediataxin

I agree. It was always funny to hear them scream something like "Nooooooooooooooo"

  • 07.17.2006 2:30 AM PDT

1. Partly due to translator
2. The Covenant memorized the English language and probably use it to insult us and what-not in our native tounge.
