yeah. who even knows if first strike happened? i mean, in the book, there were about a thousand cruisers getting ready to jump to earth. in Halo 2, only about 15 came and didn't expect to see humans there. explain that!
This, I believe is the most kick arse point that all the "book people" are missing. I read the books myself. It just goes to show that either A.) They didn't tell Nylund everything or B) Bungie had no idea how Sgt. Johnson got off the ring and left it to Nylund who, as usual, screwed things up.
Nothing in First Strike matched up with Halo 2. For example, Nylund knew that even the Chief and a handful of men couldn't take an entire cruiserr by themselves. His solution? Oh, it was a Prophet's flagship. Prophet ships don't have any crew except his personal Elite bodyguards.
In reality, we know that a Prophet's' cruiser has a full compliment of soldiers, from elites down to grunts since Regret's ship was the only one to break through the blockade and get down to New Mombasa. One hip had all the troops you encountered for all the Earth stages.
Nylund can't get anything right.
Personally, if I'd been writing 'd have had the Sarge and a good couple dozen survivors in a Covenant cruiser. The chief would have then used the debris of Halo to cover his Longsword's advance towards the ship and snuck aboard, freed the troops and then arranged a mutiny. They'd have fought their way to the ship's mainframe/engineering area and Cortana would have depressurized the ship deck by deck.
