Subject: "PROOF" Customizable Weather In Halo 2 MP!!!

I’ve heard much discussion about the possibility of having a customizable weather option in Halo 2 MP. Most of these discussions have centered around fans hopes and wishes with nothing to back them up. I decided to do a little investigating on the subject, and what I found is quite interesting.

I’ll present the evidence first, for those of you who absolutely have to see it. This isn't some rumor, you can see this "evidence" with your own eyes! The evidence is two videos from E3. The first video (most of you probably have a copy of this video already) is of the Microsoft Press Conference Halo 2 MP demo. There is a high res and a low res, if you want to download it, at FilePlanet.com. Once you have downloaded it, fast forward towards the end of the video when a tutorial is given of the level Zanzibar... when the camera flies around the level. The other video is from OpaAges.com. It is video of a Bungie employee giving a tutorial of the level Zanzibar in the “Bungie booth.” Here are the links for those of you who want to watch them.

FilePlanet - http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/140538.shtml.

Opa Ages - http://www.the-nextlevel.com/news/0405/Halo2_E3/Halo2_energys word.AVI

These two videos are of the exact same thing; except, they are taken at completely different times. One is at the press conference, and the other is behind doors at the Bungie E3 booth. If you watch the videos, you should notice exactly what I did. In the press conference video there are dark clouds and skies, not much sunlight, soft shadows, not many reflections off of the surrounding environment, and if you watch the beginning you can hear what appears to be thunder in the background. In the Opa Ages video there are bright reflections, bright skies, darker shadows, white clouds, and blue skies. This has nothing to do with the quality of the video or video noise. Both of the places I have given to download these videos give great quality videos.

I think this means one of two things.
1. - The weather changes while in play during MP.
Or
2. - You have the option to customize the weather before the level begins in MP.

While I personally belive both of these are likely in the final product, I think that the 2nd one is more likely in this particular situation. Why? If you’ll notice, both of the videos are tutorials, not actual game play. These videos are taken BEFORE the CTF round begins.

There was one other interesting thing I noticed. If you watch the bridge fall down to the huge fan with the energy sword under it, you’ll notice that the bridge reacts differently (while it is settling down) in the Opa Ages video, than in the press conference video... this could be because the envionment reacts to different wind speeds?

Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or do you guys see what I’m talking about?

This is very interesting indeed. i watched both of the movies and i see it too. The question is: are the weather effects controllable or do they just happen randomly like each time u play the level its different weather?

 • 05.18.2004 1:18 PM PDT

I think either would be cool. It would be extreamly realistic if everytime you played the weather was different. It would give you that kind of, "I don't care about the weather... just get you @$$ on the ground soldier!" feeling. It would also help to make the levels not get boring after playing them 1 billion times( not that they will get boring:).

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

Yeah, I took notice when the screenshots were posted last week.

Yea, I also noticed that when the nes screens came out. Either Bungie hasn't decided on the final weather for Zanzibar, or they are giving us hints... or maybe we're all crazy:O

Yet again, coming through with mad skillz

I believe all that completely, and have been thinking that customizable weather is gonna be in the sequel

It would - among all the other "replay value" features being put into the game, which are many - be yet another addition and detail that Bungie is well-known for

God this game is gonna be something...

Customizeable weather would be fantastic. It would be even cooler if said weather had an effect on gameplay - hog's hydroplaning in downpours, reducing visibility, etc. That would give us even more variety when it came to MP matches.

Good find!

Yea, I also think that this is apart of Bungie's plan to take over the world. Hopefully, that is:)

It would be cool if you could see the rain drips on a MC with active camouflage, so he has to stay inside to remain unseen.

it would to hard to script! if the weather chaged in the game! think about it, the water (waves) would be different to say if it was sunny!

What if halo 2 has 2 discs? one for single player or co-op, and the othe is multiplayer and xbox live? But That would kick a** if the weather would change.

I think it would be cool if there was a lightning storm, and the occasional bolt of lightning would strick a player, either killing him or taking away his sheilds. Just think>>>watching someone through a sniper scope and just then seeing a bolt of lightning strick the running person, seening them fall and start on fire or something.

This is also what I think might happen for Halo 2, but I don't really know enough about how much a disc can hold to have supporting evidence for it

Are you sure it was not the resolution of the display instead?

I'm 100% about the video quality/resolution. Both of the sites I have given to download the vids give great/clear quality. The main place that I see a difference in the two vids is, right after the attachment (the one that lowers the bridge to the energy sword) is shot, the camera does a quick shot of the sky. In that shot, you can definitly see a difference between the two vids... well, at least everyone else here seems to think you can?

Maybe we all need a check up at the eye doctor:)
