Halo 3: Collapse
Chapter 20, Revelations, is up (update 11-14-10)
The Mirratord

Bungie has not come forth and said that the material in the I Love Bees saga could be considered canon material. The way I see it, the main reason for this is because the crystal at Chawla Base, as many have theorized, is 4orty 2wo's interpretation of what the Ark is. I don't see it that way. What if that crystal was just a capacitor? It was found floating out in space, away from planets and stars. What if it is part of a network of similar crystals scattered throughout the galaxy? They float out there, collecting energy for untold millenia until Halo is activated, then they release that energy and amplify the effects of Halo. 343 Guilty Spark said that Halo's effective range was 25,000 light years, but in Halo 2 said that the Halo network would destroy all life within three radii of the galactic center. There has to be some external amplification for that to work. Even with seven rings, they would not have the power to reach that far unless something strengthened whatever 'field' they put out. If the capacitor theory were true, it would mean that when the artifact was initially 'activated,' it did not actually begin a countdown, it just began to bleed off the energy it had accumulated. It was in the process of draining the energy away when Jan James and the others reconfigured it. It then released all of its energy in one resounding pulse that was detectable by the Covenant, instead of steadily bleeding that energy off. If this were true, it would mean that their actions did far more harm than good, that the crystal gave away Earth's position to the Covenant instead of just bleeding off its energy and shutting down. If this were true, the Ark's true nature would still be left up to Bungie, but the way the Halos worked and the discrepancy in firing range would also be better explained. What do you think?

By the way, if you are unfamiliar with the I Love Bees storyline, you can find the audio files here. Please don't try speculating on this if you aren't sure what I'm talking about :)
