"Obviously you don't understand what anti-matter is.

Anti-matter is just that. The opposite of matter. Matter is what everything you see, touch etc is made of.

When Anti-matter hits matter, it "annihalates" (sp?), which is a physics term, which in lamens terms means it explodes.

That means any projectile consisting of anti-matter, would explode on contact with any matter, such as that found in the air in-between your gun and your target.

As such, an anti-matter rifle would not be a valid weapon.

Anti-matter explosive charges however are fine. The anti-matter is suspended in an electromagnetic feild, and once the detonater is triggerd, the feild collapses, letting matter and anti-matter collide, thus the explosion."

Yes very true, an anihhalation does cause an explosion (because of a reaction between the matter and anti matter which causes them to collide and implode or explode) . Also valid that it would be a lame gun.
For those saying "a computer said it would" , "its a theory" etc. Antimatter is real and we have created it on earth. It really has been created in a lab in europe as described in Dan Browns Angels and Deamons book. However, unlike the book we have not, at least to the publics knowledge , created enough that its visible to the naked eye. I know its real its been on many documentaries and on the news continous times. We have footage of the actual facility where its made. It truly is revolutionary. However, it couldnt be used in halo 3.

Here, here is an uber badass sniper rifle with a name similar to "antimatter". The rounds ARE bigger than .50, and it is indeed used to take out vehicles and the like. So far, besides involving complicated ass physics, this weapon fits all of what's his faces' criterion.

Yeah, I think the creator of this thread meant Anti-Material, not Anti-Matter.

You guys really aren't smart at all. FIrst of anti-matter is extremely explosive like hell. Just one gram has the same power as the atomic bomb that was used on hiroshima(sp?). So its very powerfull do the main fact it will release a 100% of its energy compared to nuclear fission which release 1.5% of energy it has. So .25 grams will not waste all of new york. So the person who created this thread like someone else said wants a nulcear sniper rifle. Ya we can use that to take out convenant ships as longs as no one stares at the explosion or they get blind. That would be okay if the rifle was used for that.

exactly. although it is possible, although unlikely, you could suspend some anti-matter inside a large bullet and fire it. when it makes contact, the field dissappears and the annihilation occurs.

wouldn't the antimatter just annhilate inside the gun cause it touched the barrell of the gun.?

None of you are as smart as you think you are. For one thing you say 1 gram has the same force as atomic bomb used in hiroshima. Well that's interesting considering that only 1 billionth of a gram has ever been created in a laboritory. Also you said that it releases far more energy than nuclear fission when in fact the explosion that many people have refered to in this thread is nuclear fission on a micro scale. This technology is being researched right now to create the first anti-matter engine.

As for anti-matter being uncontainable again your all wrong. Here are several methods to store anti-matter taken from the source I linked above:

* One method involves keeping magnetized antiprotons in a container of frozen hydrogen. The magnetic field and the deep cold would keep the particles from bouncing into the walls and destroying themselves.

* The other method involves allowing positrons and antiprotons (the mirror twins of normal electrons and protons) to clump together into antiatoms of antihydrogen. It might sound anti-rational, but that would make them easier to store.

As for storage in a rifle in the game I would suggest if you are trying to make the idea more practical going with the magnetized antiprotons in a container of frozen hydrogen. Then encasing that in a lead shell. This would provide for quite a large bullet and would be very explosive on contact and would probably have anti-vehicles capabilities but overall to balance this weapon into the game it would have to have a slow rate of fire and a inaccuracy that would make it only viable against vehicles and not people.

Overall the idea gets a 8/10 from me. I would like the see something like this in the game.

I believe I have a solution to this problem. This is all about creating a weapon that can destroy vehicles. Well, I give you the Rocket Launcher. What do you think? I know! I am crazy! But it just might work...

Anti-matter rounds would be greatly effective in the vaccum of space where there is nothing to interact with except for the target.

One thing that would likely work would be a powerful laser that could burn away the atmosphere in a line towards the target, effectively producing a vaccum. However, such woujld likely be very impractical.

I saw some thing on Anti-Matter on Discovery channel a year ago. I think it said there was an Anti-Matter factory, but it took a really long time to make the Anti-Matter.

Alright, antimatter is a very potent substance. According to equations (E=mc^2), one gram of matter (or antimatter) contains the same amount of energy as a nuclear bomb with a 20 kiloton yield. That is the equivalent of a Hiroshima bomb. The Hiroshima bomb leveled approxomately 5 city blocks with the fireball, and many, many more buildings with the shock waves (primary and secondary).

Anyway, when antimatter combines (or even comes in contact with) matter, including air particles, it turns into pure energy. For that reason, you need to contain it in a magnetic field of some sort, or have is suspended in a vacuum. And again, as it has already been said many times here, it costs a lot of money to create even a molecule of antimatter. In fact, we have only created this substance in extremely small amounts, on the order of protons. And even then, we cannot contain it, so it just annihilates instantly. An antimatter gun would be too complicated, would cost too much, and wouldn't be anymore effective than the guns we have now.

So, this idea isn't very plausible. It just doesn't make much sense.
