Not defending either side, but your argument is lacking. Sales mean nothing, especially considering it was a hugely hyped sequel to a very successful game. And do not kid yourself by thinking the first game had nothing to do with those sales....it had a lot to do with them. And the argument about LIVE is null, Halo:ce never got a chance at LIVE, otherwise they would both be neck and neck for most played LIVE game.
Until people start throwing some real marketing knowledge into these kinds of arguments, I wish people would stuff their self appointed expertise somewhere where it doesn't give me a headache.
It's fanboi nonsense. Did hype and being an anticipated sequel help sell Halo 2? Of course it did.
Did hype and being an anticipated sequel make Halo 2? Not if you look at the current numbers.
Does hype and being an anticipated sequel have anything to do with Halo's performance two years after release? No, Billy, it doesn't. Feel free to try to explain how the inane arguments hold up so long after the release. The only people that the hype argument makes sense to anymore are the people that aren't willing to pay attention to the facts, anyway.
And that bit about "Halo 2 and Halo 1 would be neck on neck on Live if Halo 1 had the chance?" Your opinion. Please stop waving it around as a fact.
And since when does sales mean anything? Most of the mainstream crap that is popular music sales millions of copies, doesn't neccesarily make it good. Same with movies. I've seen some high-profit movies that were just horrible. So please, do not use sales figures as a argument tool. Especailly considering the hyped marketing and Halo:CE were most likely the major contributors to Halo2's numbers
Just because you don't like things that are mainstream doesn't make them bad. Your opinion doesn't make you correct, nor does it make a mainstream audience "incorrect." Quit waving around the word "mainstream" as though Halo 1 was, at some point, "underground." Quit trying to use Halo 1 as "the major reason" why Halo 2 sold, unless you can give genuine (not to be confused with fanboi marketing logic for why Halo 2 went so huge on its launch, and then held its position for the next two years.
People can argue until their blue in the face about how Halo did this or that for Halo 2 at launch, but you can't conveniently ignore Halo 2's prolonged success when you do so.
Exscuse me. I was not meaning to word my post as if to say my opinions were fact. That is my oversight. I am definitely not a member who likes that sort of posting, and I apologize.
I, again, was not taking either side. I just FEEL, IMO, that sales have nothing to do with one game being better than another, unless we are talking profit margin alone.
And considering my career is in marketing/sales, I feel I have enough experience to make educated guesses.
