Ugh, don't turn this into a debate about more Spartans in Halo 3, or ForeRunner whatevers... let's just talk about what the HGN points towards in Halo 3.

1) I'm wondering if "Gravemind" is the leader of ALL the flood, or if there is a different consciousness that directs them on each installation. It seems to me that the one on the Infinite Succor seemed different than GM on High Charity- but perhaps that was because GM on High Charity had absorbed infinitely more corpses.

2) Interesting to find out that the ForeRunners were indeed at a war with the Flood, and beaten. I'm wondering if Gravemind has been around since then...?

3)The Spec-Ops commander has been confirmed to be Half Jaw in the HGN in the prologue before the story, as well as in a separate interview on IGN. It pretty much explains how the Half Jaw has run into the Flood before Halo 2. What I find interesting is that him and Sgt. Johnson's stories are eerily similar. I suppose he is indeed like the Sgt. Johnson to the Arbiter. I'm guessing we'll see more of him in Halo 3, then.

4) The thing that is most intriguing to me is the emphasis on the Flood's intelligence. This hasn't surfaced entirely in the games, and has only been hinted at. I'm guessing that this is going to become a major plot point in Halo 3- I'm also wondering if this ties into what happens with Cortana at all. What if, to possess more knowledge, Gravemind did indeed absorb Cortana? To me, the end result would be one insaaaaaane Flood consciousness.

5) I like seeing that the Ark is confirmed to be underneath the Earth, near Mombasa. Now, you must ask yourselves: if you accept this as fact in the Halo "game" universe, then you must accept the possibility that other Spartans exist, since they showed one in the HGN. Bungie wanted to carve out the Canon of Halo more with the HGN (hence, Sgt. Johnson's escape, Half Jaw's background with the Flood, the location of the Ark, etc).

6) I know I said earlier that we shouldn't debate about Spartans, so I'm not going to. But I am going to note that it is interesting that another Spartan is included, an "off-duty" retired Spartan at that- I'm wondering if this particular Spartan will show up in Halo 3, especially given all the hints about "re-enlisting", etc.

All excellent points. Just a quick thing about #1, I believe Gravemind is simply a much older, larger, and more intelligent version of what was being created on the IS.

Interesting... I'm wondering how that is? The Flood hadn't really been broken out for that long when GM appeared in H2... I'm wondering if this happens to tie into the "humans already on the Halo" theory...?

True, although it seems GM is much, much older than that.

Anyone know how I can get a signed copy of the HGN or anything cool of that nature? That is, without going to the ComiCon, because I have no money at the moment.

Zerodev, I listed this in your other post but is it possible the Great Journey=New Jerusalem?

Half-Jaw:"Though you leave this world. You will come on The Great Journey when the time comes."

Twelve Large ²

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

Yeah, I like the made up story about half jaw. An IHOP injury couldn't have been more interesting. Die with honor!

So where did all the corpses come from that built him?

I'm also wondering what gave this entity sentience... I really like the idea that the flood aren't just mindless space-zombies- they actually hunger for something... I'd really like to know more about where they came from, and for what end they seek to spread.

I think Gravemind is an amalmagation of Forerunner corpses, making it that much more intelligent than the other ones.

As far as sentience, I figure the more bodies and minds it collects, the more "sentient" it becomes. I believe they hunger for knowledge more than anything.

Ooh, very interesting. To me, knowing all of this now, it puts a new spin on that last scene in Halo 2 with Cortana and Gravemind. He is saying that he has questions, and she will answer him- and just as he moves to absorb her, she stops him and says that she will answer what he wants. I think, if you're right, then Cortana and Gravemind want the same thing- more knowledge. Cortana (at least in the books, and kind of hinted at in the games) wants more and more of it... and she has already wondered about how to increase her lifespan. We've only merely speculated of it before, but this really may answer whether or not Cortana and the GM have joined forces- both of them could gain what they want through a partnership. They would be like a god.

No, isn't that the name of the new heaven god will make after Jesus comes back to Earth?

What's the thing with two mandibles, that looks like a shaved Brute in "Second Sunrise" ? lol

I think it's a Flood form.

You know the wierd, four-eyed thing they had in one ad for the novel? What is it?

And Im not getting mine until tomorrow. Lucky :]

Haven't seen that ad, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Picture link?

OK, so I just finished the book, and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Just an FYI, Johnson's escape is a fairly short chapter in the GN, and leaves a lot to your imagination. That means they don't outright tell you everything. Very mysterious indeed....

And who is Maria-062? ;-)

To be more precise, the flood form on Infinite Succor you were referring to actually came from the hunting area of the ship (for sport) and is actually based off an early concept art Bungie made for the Brutes...but I am sure you hardcore Halo fans knew that already...as well as most of the Elites and even a human soldier were actually Elite concepts in the last comic about New Mombassa...oh and the human solider...that was the original concept for MC....

Well according to the GN, she's retired.

Not sure it was a Flood form because I'm not 100% sure what creature you are talking about. The first chapter in the book probably explains it for you.

Oh, and I know it's only a drawing of an Artificial Intelligence, but there is one smoking hot drawing of Cortana. Who did she model herself after?

Cortana was modelled after Dr. Halsey when Halsey was younger, if my memory serves me right. Could be wrong. Could just be modelled after Haley's neural paths and thoughts but I think the first novel said Halsey modelled her appearance after herself when she was younger.

This thing without top mandibles (which Elites DO have)

Those are all Elites. The artist for this comic used concept art for the Halo universe (Elites and Master Chief) in this comic. All this stuff can be found either on halo.bungie.org or in the Art of Halo book)

New questions raised:

1) Who exactly is Spartan-062, Maria?

2) How does the SpecOps Elite get off the Flood infected ship? Did the Flood manage a Slipspace jump?

3) How does Johnson get off Halo 04 after fighting through the Quarantine Zone? Also, what is the object he is confronted with at the end of his chapter?

Feel free to add to the frenzy.

I have all of the same questions. This was supposed to answer many questions, but mostly all it did for me was bring more questions to the top.

Bungie is just that cool... its like and addiction... they never give you all the stuff they want you to miss it then they give you more to hook you then do the same thing over and over... its simple crack dealer edicit.

What is the mystery? All these questions are resolved.

1)Spartan-062 (Maria) is a formerly enlisted but now retired Spartan II who tests the MJOLNIR Mk VI battle armor on Earth at Songnam before it is shipped up to John....that is right...a girl Spartan wore that armor before Master Chief wore that exact set of armor in Halo 2 and 3.

2) He boards a Phantom waiting for him outside the hangar bay of Infinite Succor after his fight with the flood-infected Elite he trained earlier.

3) Read First Strike like a true Halo fan.

How so if the Master Chief is wearing a Battle Suit tested by Maria? Does that mean the Master Chief is a cross-dresser. HAHA. LOL. jk

Damn, I need to get this.

It's a Sangheili with no helmet, like the one in first Strike, the corpse in the Gravemind level (Might be High Charity) and like the Arbter with no armor.

I haven't read the Novel yet, but reading your post, I am very sure that its a Covenant Engineer. Unless it was a drone from Halo 2. Definately an Engineer.

No, it's definitely a beast-looking thing, probably a Flood infected animal from the hunting preserve as someone mentioned. It's not floating on a bag of gas with a bunch of tentacles, it looks like a bear/wolverine/brute.

A thought just occurred to me when thinking about a Flood infected animal: what does this do to the whole "sentient" thing? What do I mean? When 343 GS says, "It kills any sentient life...at least any with enough biomass to sustain...," what does he mean by "sentient life?" If that is indeed a drawing of a Flood infected animal, that must mean the Halos essentially kill anything larger than a chipmunk.

Suppose this really means it kills anything except microorganisms.

Big Bang + Evolutionary Theory anyone?

Of course, if this is the case, how come the Forerunner couldn't figure out how to kill all the Flood also?

Food for thoughts. Feed!
