Since everyone at Bungie is busy with, well... whatever their new project will be, and are ending the development and preparing to release Halo 2. I had thought of taking it upon myself to update some of bungie's old games for the 21st century. That is to say give them a new look, but let them run based on the same system. My first project would be ONI since that is a pretty good game. I would pretty much only fix up the graphics. The problem is everything is pretty cryptic, and all of the information that I have been able to find on the files system and interactions is kinda basic, like changing textures.

My goal, with ONI for example, is to extract the models, lets say Konoko, and update the graphics, make nicer higher poly models, etc. Where my problem arises is that there is no source code for the game that I have been able to find, and certain parts of the data that has been figured out is only part of what I need. Anyone know of either source code for ONI or any editing tool that allows for extraction and modification of the models, the skeletons, the textures and the UV texture coordinates? Basically any way for me to gain access to all that information.

Of course, I am just a community member, that could all be nonsense that I just typed.

Looks legit to me.

--Sgt. Smith thinks Bungie should try to get those rights back. Take Two can burn in heck.

However if you can get permission from the company (good luck...) you can do that sort of thing.

Yeah generally speaking companies have a problem with this kind of. But if there aere tools out there, that have not been shot down for legal reasons then there may not be legal issues, for example: You can easily edit cutscenes in ONI, I i remember readfing somewhere that ONI was origionall going to allow modding, but that part was never completed due to a rush delivery or something. Besides this would not be a free release of the game, only an upgrade. I will admit I'm not sure what that falls under in terms of legal issues.

Oni is highly resistant to modding. To my knowledge, no one has ever successfully swapped models or animations. The most successful modding has been to scripts, saved games, and textures (some texture swapping has been done)

Hey thx. The only problem is that ONI isn't exactly an old game. It was a few months after the release of PS2, but on the flip side, the game wasn't exactly the most successful. oh well. Even if they woudn't allow for a public release, I would still like to spruce up the graphics and such. I may contact Take Two thx for the suggestion, although I can probably guess what their answer would be. =(

The reason I even thought of doing this with ONI is because on Bungie.net's main page the title bar has a high rez render of Konoko from ONI, and it gave me ideas...
