Well never had a Halo clan, but I've had, and been in clans in other games. To start you need some people you trust, play Halo 2, and are good at it. At least one other person, preferably two. Then you (preference) three work out the basics. First choose a name, if you want to be a successfull clan you have to have unity. One person choosing a name doesn't do that. Next you need to get a website, so when you get going every member has a place to see news, practice times, downloads, new strategies and such. Not to mention everybody loves forums =p Don't get a -blam!- website either, get a good one, nobody likes a -blam!- website. There are good deals out there. You then need to decide about how many people your looking for, and start recruiting. When recruiting you need a rank system, or 'caste' system if you will. The 3 original members are of course leaders, then depending on how many leagues/ladders there are, or how many different leagues/ladders you wish to play in, you seperate squads. For discussion's sake let's say you want to play in 3 different ladders. Each of the leaders takes over a division, and start recruiting. When recruiting remember that attitude is half of the player, also keep in mind that your clan will only get better if you start out recruiting players better than yourselves. Once you start getting players get to know every playing habit, and strategy, and thought process they have when playing. Make sure everybody gets to know everybody, and likes everybody. As leaders it's your job to make sure there isn't bickering. Start holding practices, coming up with strats, and giving each other tips, anything to improve each other.
Back to the 3 divisions you can have a team in each of three ladders, and rotate the players. So that each player gets a chance to play in each league, or if league rules prohibit that, just put each team in a league. I've been on teams that have done this and I truley believe it is the best way. Everybody gets to play, but don't have to play so much it interferes with their "lives".
On a sidenote it is good to have a member who is good at web design, and knows how to run a website.
Also I don't call them Clans, I call them teams or squads. Clan sounds corny to me.
This is just a brief summary, there are many more things to it but this should give you a good start. About it costing money to have teams in Halo 2 I highly doubt it.
If anyone is interested I will be putting together a clan for Halo 2 and am going to need somebody with web design expierence. I will be buying a lot of webspace, and a domain in the next couple of months. Like I said if anyone is interested, well you can pm me, but I'm sure many others are going to start their own clans or already have their own from halo pc, and xbc.
