Well, here what i think: What if the ark wasn't meant to save those who were inside it but instead it was a vault where the DNA of every known (to the forerunners) species were kept?In that case maybe the ark was meant to recreate those species after some time when the flood would be dead.Even more, perhaps it was programmed to send the new created species back to their home planet in order to evolve again and start over.(inside a space shuttle)They also kept their DNA so that they would also be reborn(perhaps as the human race)!!That means that all known races (covenants, forerunners etc)--i believe the covenant races allready existed but in a primitive state--would have to start again and repopulate the galaxy that was stripped from sentiend life. Why do i think that?Well according to the most popular theories only humans survived the activation of the halos 100,000 yrs ago.In that case the amound of time for the covenant species to appear (through evolution) and reach their present state would be very small--100,000yrs compared to the 65,000,000 yrs that took mammals on earth to evolve into the species we know today--But if my theory is correct then humans(forerunners?) and covenant allready existed ,and were recreated, so the amound of time would be enough. Also that fits to the theory that there is only one ark and to the biblical theories(Noah saved ALL species, not only humans--saving the DNA today is somewhat similar to what Noah did then)
