The "character development" for the Masterchief amounts to tough guy clichés', grunts, cries of pain, and shooting a multitude of weapons at an alien horde. Why would it matter if he was killed off in H3 right at the start? He could be replaced with Spartan Will (my personal preference), Nicole, or BillyBobJoe. It wouldn't make a difference to the game play, and that's what it's all about, right?

I am curious as to how some people can have any kind of emotional attachment to a character that is so poorly developed as a person. In truth, as a Spartan, isn't he less than a person? More of a robotic killing machine made from bone, muscle, and sinew? He doesn't even have a s3x drive for goodness sake?! Spartan Nicole, Will, or Sir Edward Higglesworth III could save the world just as well and provide the same game play experience.

What are you talking about? Who said that he doesn't have a sex drive? It's not true that if you don't use it you lose it. So yes he does have a "s3x drive". And in my opinion they have made it so most of the people who play the game are att ached to the MC.

For the most part I agree. Does ANYONE remember "The Walkaway Girl"? I so thought she would be MC's legacy. Jan James was her name. Her dad was a spartan.

Actually, if you check out every second "Halo plotline thread" you'll get the reference to the books where it states that due to some intensely boring plot point, he in fact doesn't have a s'ex drive. Sit down.

2 things:

1. I haven't even read the books but I know from the crazies around here that Spartans take drugs to suppress their s3x drive. So they can focus on the killin' I suppose.

2. What have they done to attach you to the MC? I'm curious.

Yeah it would make a difference to the game... Although MC isnt the only Spartan in the Halo Universe he is the only one in the games currently. Killing off MC would be like Nintendo killing off Mario in the next Mario Brothers adventure and going "oh look heres another plumber... his name is Mike."

As for emotional attachement... Its not that anyone is emotionally attached to MC. He's the typical image most people would have of a male in his position. A killing machine... raised to do nothing else but follow instructions, kill, and do things that would normally mean certain death for a normal human. Also if you read the books... the Spartans do have emotions, they have feelings for the other fellow Spartans they have been with through all their training.

At least Mario has a bloody catchphrase.

Exactly. Mario's got more personality in his freaky little moustache than MC.

It's hard to have too much personality in a suit of armor. Remember Justin Bailey? Now that dude was a chick.

while i mostly agree with you, i think it would annoy a lot more people killing him off, than it would leaving him in

OK. riddle me these:

What's the MCs favorite food?

Which alien race does he hate the most?

Does he love his momma (or his mad scientist daddy)?

Has he struggle with inner demons concerning the awful libido killing drugs he takes to stay focused at work?

What is really known about him from THE GAME?

If we know nothing about him, how can we love him?

"I blame canser its going slutting itself around now so are bodys act like were aging faster stupid whore of a desies" ~ GruntX

First off, in the developement of the Spartans, they were, in fact, given steroids that supressed things like that. But to go and say that any other Spartan could do just as well in battle is total garbage. There is a reason John (Spartan-117) is called Master Cheif. There is a reason that he is one of the few (I think it's less than ten now) surviving Spartans. As for the way he is portrayed in-game, I do agree that he could do with a little more personality, but in the books, anyone can see that he is actually an intelligent brooding man with several inner demons. To say that you could kill him off and still play the game is like saying you could kill James Bond (007) and still make movies based on 018 or even 004!

Another reason to be behind the suit. You dont need to show personality in battle... If you are scared of your enemy then you dont have to worry about showing it behind a mask.

This all becomes truer with each game release. The Justin Bailey syndrome; you didn't get to see the armor come off until the end of the game. Now we are heading into game three - ultimately it becomes increasingly difficult to identify with MC for the reasons Wiltron listed above. Also that and as one who plays way more live than campaign, I tend to hear MC's voice as a squeaky little kid who desperately wants me to give him the sniper rifle.

Oh My God! You are right! I came into this thread wanting to defend the MC but now I see you are right...I never loved the MC...I was just infatuated with him.

It's like I fell in love with being in love with him, or at least my personal image of who him is anyway.

Real Love is a lot better than Blind Infatuation. You are 104% correct.

I suspect there is some development in the books, but you have to remember that the VAST majority of people who play the game will never read the books. Therefore, the in-game development must stand on it's own.

Fine, if this was real life, and the man was the saviour of humanity, then I could deal with a monotone drawl spewing tired clichés that I've heard Bruce Willis do better. But he isn't. It's a video game, with game being the operative word. Where's the entertainment value in the Masterchief himself rather than the environments of Halo. I think his IP value is well past it's sell by date.

Um, no, because James Bond:

1. Has a true personality, though a bit subtle.
2. Has the best video game ever: GoldenEye.
3. Has a sex drive.

Who cares about that stuff? Seriously? It may amuse some people or may be some intresting random facts, but the game has been succesful without including all that information...

Do you want them to throw in a Spartan love story? Want them to have a MC diary? Heck... that crap is for little girls and little boys that like to play with themselves.

Look at it this way... Do you think this game would have been as successful without MC? Seriously... The game may not revolve around MC fully, but he is an important part of the story, which is what a majority of us are interested in. Not that MC had his first crush when he was 8 years old, that he had his first wet dream at 15, that his favorite food is pizza, and that he likes to play volley ball in his spare time...

I understand your position, and will present this concept instead. Perhaps BUNGiE created the game with the intent that you, the player, are meant to be Master Cheif. By not revealing his identity, or anything about him for that matter, they allow you to imagine whomever you like as the Master Cheif; be it a mindless killing cyborg or a quite and conservative warior fighting for all that is good. I know it seems kind of corny, but it is reasonable once you think about it.

We all assume the MC is pasty white and possibly a shriveled mess under the armor ... makes you wonder what being in that armor does to a mans bits n kibbles. That's no James Bond.

The best heroes in games, movies, books, or real life have a personality. Personality is built on actions, dialog, a peek into a persons private life. If MC has a Hello Kitty Diary, it would be nice to know about it.
