Maybe you guys should go back and play the games if you don't think the Chief has a personality. Think about it for a second: would you be surprised if the Master Chief's new armor was a pink tutu and he kept on giggling every time he killed something? It would be out of character for the Chief to be behaving in such a way, and you know it. Therefore, the Chief has a character, accept it.
You know what you can expect from the Chief in Halo 3. Every little thing he does screams badass, from the way he walks, the way he stands, to the way he talks. His dialogue is blunt and to the point, stoic and bold at the same time. He says more in a few words than most characters say in 50 (think of when he said "Boo" to the room of Covies and the unforgettable "Sir, finishing this fight." line).
Do you remember the cutscene where he was dragging the bomb and then riding it in space? Go watch it again and pay attention to his body language, then go watch Johnny Depp's body language in Pirates 2. Maybe then you can come to appreciate Master Chief's aura of strength, courage, and unspoken determination, the way he keeps his emotions in check and remains totally calm and collected, unphased when there are rockets whizzing past his head and the whole freaking universe is falling apart around him. How's that for personality? Would you rather have some cartoon rabbit with a cheesy catchphrase?
Oh and if you're looking for some angsty teenage love story emo junk, go watch a soap opera. However, if you pay attention, you'll realize that there is some -blam!- tension between the Chief and Cortana, and it's extremely well-thought out and original. The twist is that Cortana doesn't have a body, so they can never consummate their affections. She's a voice in his head but nevertheless she's his female counterpart, she was made for him. I dare you to find a more poignant moment in any romance movie than the scene where Cortana and the Chief parted ways at the end of Halo 2.
"Cortana, I'll.."
"Chief, don't make a girl a promise, if you know you can't keep it."
It sounds much better than it reads, go watch the scene for the fantastic voice acting.
So how can you say that the Master Chief is a hollow character? He cannot be replaced so easily at all. There is a world of depth to the Chief that you miss if all you do is XboxLive.
1. The Master Chief's character can be summed up in one word... badass.
2. He says a lot more in the books, and we can understand that he gets scared and has inner demons over losing his fellow Spartans but he never shows it, for the sake of the mission.
3. The dialogue is rather natural for a pixelated character, name some one-liners that he had that were cliche by your standards.
4. He's not soulless in the way he reacts to his fellow Spartans and Marines, they look up to him (to a few marines, he is like a god to them) and want to follow him.
5. Steve Downes kicks so much ass as the voice and was perfectly cast. It's kind of odd that we never really see HIS face either unless you do some research.
6. If we had any other Spartan in a leadership role, it would be too hard to explain their backstory, where they came from, and who they are to the people who haven't read the books.
7. This IS John-117's story. I would still like to know more about him though, but not what he looks like. (what if?: he simply sheds one tear at the end over a catastrophic loss, which you see splash on the ground as he regains his composure.)
