Meh ... just call them Spartan 1 and Spartan 2. Hot swap 'em during a cutscene where Spartan 1 dies, Spartan 2 comes in, Growls, and continues the game in EXACTLY the same way you would've played with the MC. Most people just skip the cutscenes (or go grab a sammich) so it really doesn't matter much.
dear god, no. anyone that doesnt care about the halo story shouldnt have a say in what should or could happen. Master chief stays, for reasons i will elaborate upon later.
also, to the person that said continuity doesnt matter anymore, you sir, dont pay enough attention to the story to be able to say what should or could happen either. sargeant johnson did not die in halo 1. he has boren's disease, which screws up his nervous system. the flood hijack your nervous system by interfacing with it and taking control of your body. now when the flood infection form that latched onto johnson tried to interface with his nervous system, it couldnt, because it was all screwed up. sargeant johnson eventually made it to a pelican and made it off halo. he was picked up my master chief shortly after the halo blew up. cortana could nto detect him because their engines were off.
master chief has as much personality as you put into him. WE decide who we want master chief to be. he has no face, no appearance, no nothing besides a voice and a suit. this allows us to place any faace, any body, and almost any personality we want into him (i suppose nobody understand storytelling devices anymore). also, if master chief were to die, i would almost undoubtedly cry. we've been through so much in halo 1 and halo 2. to see his journey through the series and to see him die at the end, i would definitely mourn the loss. master chief is more than a suit. he's a hero of the human race that is standing up for all that's good in the world. he isn't a mindless killing machine.
also, halo was popular for more reasons than just fun gameplay. the gameplay is nice, sure. the multiplayer is great, but the real reason halo is so ggreat, to me at least, is the storyline.
