Subject: Orbital Defense Grid, A Bit Unlikely

that which is not dead can eternal lie, but with strange aeons even death may die.

The problem with a defense system that is not in Earth orbit would be a matter of scale and range.

A system in the asteroid belt would need to have millions of platforms to saturate the belt and have no "open spots" and would still be easily defeated by the opposing force coming in from above or below the orbital plane of the system.

A defense system for Earth would need to be near Earth, distance-wise.

Even if it were at lunar distances, the amount of platforms needed to give a complete sphere of coverage would be monumental just due to the increase in the surface area of the "sphere". Plus, even MAC rounds or missiles are not traveling at luminal or near-light speed. If fired from too far away, the missile or projectile could be dodged or avoided.

An orbital grid is a very practical solution.

Yes, But dosent Sargeant Johnson say, during the trip on the "train thing" in Cairo that the Cairo is one of 300 Gyo-synch platforms, which is a hell of a lot.

Considering that the 20 mac guns that were defending reach did away very well against large covenant ships. plus, If you look at the human fleet in the beginning of halo 2,
(I am refering to when you are out-side the Cairo and are looking up,)
Is 90% made up of Frigates, which have multiple batteries of Archer missle pods, which would be perfect at taking out Dropships and small craft.

(though If you watch the Frigate they shoot small MAC rounds) curious?

I would think though, that considering that there is no proof of the Orbital defence platforms of halo 2 being powered by ground based generators, that the covenant would not know this, and send ships to the surface to take out the generators only to later discover they were not there.

But I Think that the humans have some sort of "guass platforms" to take out small drop ships, and boarding craft.

Gauss = MAC =/= Rail Gun

yes I know that, but guass are much smaller and use very small magnetic coils to make them effective, Im saying that because to use a MAC gun, even on a human Destroyer or Cruiser, you have to Pointing straight at the target, It is that single factor that make them very inafective an taking down lots of ships at once,

the humans would be better off, if there ships had many "large Guass Cannon" that were on Turrets and could pivot or change directions of the target.

Another thing that gets me is that in the halo Art book. A very reliable source for Small Details is the the concept art for "In amber Clad" is that it had 4 small gun turrets on the sides on top of the main hull. not Missle pods, but clearly gun turrets, like tank cannons.

Another thing I would like to point out is that I dont think we have yet to seen any of the "marathon Class heavy Cruisers", I mean on the halo.bungie.org, it says that the only other class of ship that we see in all of halo 2, is the marathon class ship. which is very odd for these 2 reasons.

1. In the very opening cinematic of halo 2, when the "Arbiter" discibes the PoA leaving reach, is a ship that does not look and is NOT the PoA, it looks TOTALLY different, At first I thought they might have just redesigned it due to techical stuff, but if thats so then how do ALL the other ships that are not Frigates look just like it, An eg. is the ship that is almost blown up by the pulse laser of regrets 2nd Carrier, (the one MC puts the bomb in.)

2. in the Fall of reach, it states that there were only 4 marathon crusiers that were still in service, and they all were protecting earth,

I know, I was just pointing that out, for some unknown reason..maybe it's cause my Novel is going to Have Rail Guns, and people tell me I was copying Halo =/

Well, it does make sense, maybe the Orbital Defenses had smaller guns on them that you coulden't see, just for that.
