First off, yes there are lots of "no cd" hacks of the halo.exe, but those suck. This, however, is another solution that allows you to play Halo PC without using a CD (and use the original halo.exe).

I already wrote instructions for this at filefront.com, but I'll just paste it here for ease of access:

This .zip contains a Halo PC CD image file, and a .exe for a program called Daemon. This program allows you to take the Halo PC CD image, and "mount" it to your HDD (or whatever) and make it seem like there is currently a CD in your drive. Best part is that you don't have to use any "halonocd.exe" or anything like that, you may keep your original halo.exe

Instructions: Install Daemon. I should add this though, when I first opened the .exe, it said my computer needed to restart, and the 2nd time I opened the .exe, then the program installed. Just putting that out there.

After that's done, you should see a new icon (it looks like a red lightning bolt) on your system tray. Right click it and go to: Virtual CD/DVD-ROM > Device 0 (or whatever) > Mount Image. Then browse to that Halo .img file.

And there you have it. No more CD required. This program does not need to run. Or even have the process running. If for any reason you want to remove the virtual CD Image file, again, right click the Daemon system tray icon and go to Virtual CD/DVD-ROM and select Unmount All Drives.

I hope that made sense.

Now, you can find the download here.

And if Bungie, or anyone frowns upon something like this. I'm quite sorry, then delete this thread, and/or give me a swift blacklisting.

Happy trails.

P.S. It's so much better not having to look for my stupid CD, and all of that. It's so much easier just to start it on the fly without any hassles.

Rawr.

Yeah. But you see, most people out there are clueless about these things. Not to be condescending, though.

I use it constantly, in fact, since I broke my original CD.

Just make sure you've got the valid CD key when doing so.

Great post.

Maw

I don't think Bungie or Microsoft would like this because you could use the virtual drive and be running the same copy on 2 or 3 computers.

Is this legal? If so ima do it.

You can have it installed on as many computers as you want, the CD key is there to ensure that only one copy is played online at a time. So you cannot, for instance, LAN 3 computers with Halo PC and you will require 3 different keys to play them.

Hey, I think I cleared all this stuff up in the "Is this legal?" thread a while ago. No need to make another one I guess, but whatever.

I wonder if the Wolf thinks the Moon listens when he howls at it.

sounds pretty cool. i would need it because everytime i start up my pc my cd drive hasnt detected my halo pc disk in the drive. so i have to open and close the drive so my pc will realize that the cd is in the drive. it gets annoying. just another sign that i need to get a new disk.

Yeah. I was kinda worried about this not being legal, or something like that.

I was originaly going to recommend making an image of your own Halo game, but that'd take too much time for y'all to figure out.

And for that person who pirated his/her copy of Halo, you may be able to register it with your friends serial code, but you can't play online >:3.

Old.....I used to do that, but it made my computer slower and it ate up a TON of memory. (Having Halo, BF2, and Oblivion ripped to my computer ate up 6 GB+)

There has been a lot of discussion about that. One side argues that, according to the DMCA, bypassing any copy protection on media disks is illegal. The other side argues that if you legally purchased the game you are entitled to make a backup of it.

#1: It's not hard to make your own CD image. Just download Alcohol 120%, it's that easy.

#2: Sucks if 6GB is a lot of memory for you. It's not a lot when you have a few hardrives equaling 375 GBs

Na thats bull-blam!-. You can LAN as many as you want with the same copys, but can't go "online". On your own network its fine, I've done it.

Meh, it's a 80 GB. At least I still have 20 GB left.

Well, I've tried it on a LAN with one CD and it's failed to work. Therefore I theorise your disk is a cracked one.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny.

Why not simply do what I do? Keep your Halo CD in the computer the 24 hours of the 7 days of the week. Only take it out when you're going to use another CD, and as soon as you're done with it, put your CD back. No hassle, no effort, very easy.
