I was recently thinkings about the brief period in which a few people posted in all itallics, trying to fill the void left by the color removal. A mod (maybe it was dmbfan) put a stop to that, promising a stiff banning for all those partaking in it. No one (I believe) has done it since.

Couldn't that, theoretically, be done to colors? Bang out some rules for them (no entire posts in color, no "invisible" nonsense, ect) and enforce them harshly? A couple week or so long bannings would have everyone respecting the color use as they respect itallic, bold, and underline now.

Yes, it may seem like the trade-off is unfair. More work for mods, only superficial enhancement for the site, but you could say the same for any of our text enhancement tages, couldn't you?

Yes, it would throw off our current mod/Bungie worker "easy identification" system. You could remedy this by making it impossible to post in those colors, and colors resembling those. Or you could just make it bannable offense. People won't be posting in all color anyway.

Pros
* Emphasizing things
* Creating flags and other such things in sigs.
* Allowing for more creativity when writing stories.

Cons
* More work for mods

And you could solve that con with a simple, strict set of rules.

Yes, I know, we already have a strict set of rules for the forums and those are still disobeyed, despite enforcement. The only things I can offer are that maybe it's because those rules (like spam and flames) have grey area, and the color rules wouldn't. Or what about what happened with the itallic feature?

Please offer feedback and your own pros and cons. Thanks.

There was a time when I posted in all bold. dmbfan09 put a stop to that (you.......moderator, you......... :-)

I think colors would be cool, but they would inevitably get abused, or so I would think. I haven't been here that long, but there would lot of people posting in white to play forum cop. And the moderators are defined by the color of their text.

I wish I could've seen what it was like though.

Although colors comming back would be nice, it would still get abused to much. The Flood would go nuts. And asking more work of the ninjas. If many forum rules are not obeyed, what will make those rule breakers follow the rules? A ban? They would come back and do it all over again. I doubt they will be brought back. Some users are just to imature to handle them. Its sad, really.

I think it would cause too much chaos...It's fine the way it is.

Even that could get abused. Remember, it only takes one bad apple. If the group Admin has the option to turn the member use of colors on and off, then it might be nice. However, there is still the problem of Achronos implimenting it on the site..

I do like the On/Off feature for groups. He might still have the code from when the colors were around? Maybe he'll actually do it.

Colors are much more obtrusive than using italics, for instance. Users could change the color of every word in a post, thus abusing the system, but with italics, that cannot be done. Also, colors were removed so the moderators could have white text, and Bungie employees could have gold text, which stands out more in a thread, indicating that that post most likely has slightly more value than a normal one.

I think color would bring more... color to the forums, but I agree that it would get WAY out of hand. I remember when we could use color, and pretty much every single sig had color in it. And especially since it has been gone for so long, and it suddenly come back, that would probably incite people to pretty much spam the forums with color. =P (for the first couple of months anyways)

I wasn't here when colours were about, but I hear they were abused and so were removed. I doubt the community could be trusted as a whole again... :\

Eh, no other color would look cool to me. Maybe if group Admin/Mods could have pretty colors, but other than that, no.

New members would go phsycotic. Especially since no new member reads the code of conduct, terms of use, nor any of the stickies. It would get abused within a few hours of being put in place.

I remember the colour days. I can see why they were removed. But they have kind of returned, at least in group news articles.

I don't know, maybe if they took out Mod/Admin/Background/Light colors it could work.

Well from what I have heard...writing the script for a Color tag system could break the code for the site causing it to crash. For more information ask Achronos, or ask GameJunkieJim...since he is the one I learned this from.

The problem with this idea is that there is always a gray area. Someone would have to decide whether a post used too much color, or was too obnoxious.

Having said that, I think it is still a plausible idea. The trick would be in making the gray area as small a possible. That would require the least amount of extra work for the moderators.

One way I can think of to do this is to have a very limited list of colors. Maybe, say, five different colors. Maybe even less. Having less colors would stop people from using a different color for every word. But they could still use alternating colors, which would be very annoying.

To help with this, they could make the colors fairly unobtrusive. They could use darker colors, instead of bright red, or yellow, ect. The colors would still make things stand out, but it would help against the eye-bleed factor.

In my opinion, it would have to be looked at. I don't know if they could find the right colors to use to make it not as exploitable.

Having said this, I really doubt it would happen. We're due for an influx of new members, and giving them more tools to spam would probably be a bad idea.
