The reason Halo 2 is not that great in campaign to how you remember Halo 1 was because we all wasted ourselves on Halo 1 gameplay over and over so when Halo 2 came around, and there was basically just a lot of the same from Halo 1, with a few new stuff thrown in there, we were all ready tired of playing the game.
I went a couple weekends ago and beat Halo 1 and Halo 2 in order, and basically Halo 2 is exactly what they said Halo 2 was gonna be, Halo 1 on fire. Larger battles (sorta.... I should say, average battle is larger) , stuff flying around everywhere, giant moving elevators, much better AI. What was it lacking? A really compelling story. Something that made you want to drive on to the next level to find out whats going on. Halo 2 never really introduced a mystery, it just assigned you random objectives until the very end when it started to come together to explain something (which really wasn't anything new if you read between the lines in Halo 1). In Halo 1, they introduced this entirely new object in space, plus a super mysterious alien race that you are battling, and really weird stuff we had never seen in a game before. How is Halo 3 gonna combat this? It has tons of unanswered questions by Halo 2, forerunners, Cortana, Earth, gravemind, and Truth. Basically its gonna be really epic because you can count on all these things being brought together for one massive conclusion, when most likely an even more epic twist will appear.
