Now normally I'm not one to get into speculation, but one day talking on MSN with a friend, we got into this huge discussion on Halo 3, and then moved onto religion somehow, then somehow merged both. The just of it is, I was explaining to him the religious references found in the Halo series. Now, this isn't really a theory, more of a brainstorm that people can use to peice things together.

I'm aware that people already know quite a bit of it, but I think there might be a few things that people havn't quite clued into yet. This also isn't just the religious things, its a few other little peices.

Anyway, read on if you wish.

Religious

-John-117. Bible passege. Reads "1because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." Generally this means the Cheif is the savior. (AKA the Halo series' interpretation of Jesus)

-Covenant. The real definition is God's promise to humanity, or an agreement between a group and God. The Covenant we fight in Halo is a group who believes they are doing the will of the gods.

-The excessive use of 7 in the games. 7 Rings, 7 Moniters. 7 year life span for Smart AI. ect. 7 has a profound meaning in the bible. 7 days in creating the earth, 7 trumpets, 7 seals. ect.

-Cortana is Halo's interpretation of Judas. Judas was the best friend of Jesus. (Cortana + Cheif). Judas was believed to have betrayed Jesus and hand him over to the Romans. However, the plan during the making of Halo and Halo 2, may have been for Cortana to betray Cheif in some way, however, with the recent discovery of the Gospel of Judas (I think it was found in Febuary, correct me if Im wrong), this may be incorrect. The Gospel of Judas states that Jesus ASKED Judas to turn him over. Judas, being Jesus' disciple and best friend could not refuse, and did so. Jesus sacraficed himself.

-The Ark + The Flood and The Ark + The Covenant are two factors to consider. Noah's Ark saved him from The Flood. The Ark of the Covenant carried the 10 commandments.

-The trumpets heard in the Halo 3 Teaser symbolize the Apocolypse. The Angels were given 7 Trumpets and each brought forth some disaster, eventually leading up to hell on earth. The trumpets in the teaser, in conjunction with Cortana's line "This is the way the World ends" references some great Apocolyptic disaster.

Story

I've read a lot on these boards, and some people seem to confuse one bit of the story or another. Here are a few little bits that are often confused.

-The prophet of Regret found earth by mistake. He didnt know it was our homeworld. He had him and his small fleet just scouting out space, then they stumbled upon earth. Now, he had a small fleet, but attacked anyway before recieving back up, and we royally kicked his alien ass. Then once the Covenant fleet finnally arrived at earth (Assumed to be around just after the attack on the Delta Halo temple), the Covenant discovered the Ark.

-The Covenant did not attack the temple because you were on it. That was just a bonus. They attacked the temple to kill Regret for being an incompetent idiot.

-You meet the Gravemind, the Flood Overlord. The Gravemind could've killed you at that moment, but wished to use you for his own gain. The Halo rings kill the "food" of the Flood. Without food, they die. So the activation of Halo is the last thing the Gravemind wants. What he wants to know, is the location of the Ark. He has the Prophet of Regret under his control as shown. With Regret, he easily learned of the Ark no doubt, but Regret probably did not know the location because of his incompetence. He would use the Cheif and Arbiter to learn its location of this "Safe haven." The flood's goal is to destroy.

-The Gravemind also held 2401 Penitent Tangent under his control. However, 2401 is a machine, which is why I believe the Gravemind did not learn the Ark's location from 2401. However, the Gravemind CAN use Halo's subsystems to teleport around with the help of 2401, which is no doubt how the Gravemind made it to High Charity.

-Gravemind, now on High Charity will probably ask Cortana the location of the Ark. Cortana no doubt knows this because she was in Alpha Halo's system, and is now in High Charity's system. Cortana in her damaged state (its been about 7 years since her creation), may turn over the info. However, this is where theory comes into play, with the discovery of the Gospel of Judas, and learning that Jesus may well of asked Judas to turn him over, for the good of humanity, Cheif ("Jesus") may ask Cortana ("Judas") to reveal the location for whatever reason. That is just speculation, but something I thought I'd throw out there.

This is all something I brainstormed when a friend was bombarding me with Halo questions. Just thought I'd share it. I don't know if it's anything special, but just some info I thought some people might enjoy reading. Some of it is already common knowledge to Halo fans. The part that really interests me though is Cortana being Halo's interpretation of Judas. As well, the fact that she may or may not betray Cheif, depending on weather or not Bungie decides to integrate the Gospel of Judas.

The other thing I'm interesting to see, is if Cheif truely is the savior (Christ), then he will die sacraficing himself for the good of humanity. However, how his return (The Holy Ghost - Christ rises again as a ghost after 3 days before accending to Heaven), is what I am really anxious to see. If Bungie really relates this, and has Cheif die, how will they implement his return? I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to see a ghost in Spartan armour walking around. Just a thought.

Anyway, feedback is welcome.

As I said, the trumpets in conjunction with "This is the way the World ends" could be foreshadowing some apocolyptic end on earth.

OMG!! all of that made perfect sense! although, it is questionable of why the chief would have cortana "betray" him. Maybe the floods presence at the ark could work to his advangate some how. pre-occupying the covenant whilst he does what he does perhaps?

but yeah, great theorums. Kudos!

Thanks yah. :P

This all just poped into my head and I needed to get it out and it all fit together perfectly, so I thought It'd be interesting to share.

I also would like to see how Bungie does the "betrayal." Cortana is going to betray Cheif weather he asks or not I believe. How they implement that will be interesting to see.

Anymore feedback?

Halo is a game with many religious ties, that doesn't mean follow it like a religion like some people do. Some people treat this game as their Bible. Anyway, I know a lot of this most people knew already, but there are things in there that I see people getting confused about a lot.

If you want I could post similarities between Halo and the song Tribute by Tenacious D. Does that make Halo's storyline based on Tribute? Of course it doesn't.

The bible is so large and covers so much, that anything could be "linked", "based" or "related" to it. Furthermore, we get into what people preceive the bible means, which stretches things even further. I just don't believe that Halo is so closely related to the bible as many people claim.

You have one "possible" flaw in your theroy. Bungie is obsessed with the number 7. You may be right because your religous theroy may have be the reason why bungie is obsessed with 7.

Dude brilliant.

I just recently started reading the Halo books. Here is an interesting quote. Quick clue-in: Dr. Halsey and Cortana are talking and Cortana is allowed to choose which Spartan she wants to accompany. She ends up choosing John (MC). Before Dr. Halsey agrees she asks Cortana this: "Could you sacrifice him if you had to? If it meant completing the mission?" Dr. Halsey asked quietly."Could you watch him die?"

Just dandy... and this is how Cortana replies: "My priority Alpha order is to complete this mission," she replied emotionlessly. "The Spartans' safety as well as mine is a Beta-level priority command."

Now I haven't read much farther into the books and I'm not sure if this quote gets neutralized later on but from what it sounds like... Cortana is willing to sacrifice John for the sake of whatever this mission happens to be. What if Cortana does something in Halo 3? Maybe she reveals secret information to Gravemind... who knows.

Now there is an idea. I completely forgot about that. That just adds to the idea of her giving up Cheifs life. However, she has done things to compromise the mission before to save cheif's life, so her mind may have been changed. As a Smart AI, Cortana can develop a personality, and even a conscience. So this may be irrelevant now, but very good find. Thanks for reminding me :)

As I said, some people treat this game like their bible when they should it. But weather you believe it or not, Bungie IS using key religious elements in the game.

just to tell you there are more gospels than the 4 used by the Catholic Church and the gospel of Judas is one where the church said it was not part of the real occurrence of Jesus Christ

The church believed it was a conspiracy at first, now they are starting to look the other way. They at first believe someone was pulling a hoax, and they were afraid if it was real that this would change the bible and religious history as we know it. They are starting to believe this Gospel is real apparently.

But either way, this still doesn't change the fact of Cortana being Halo's interpretation of Judas.

Im not sure if this has been posted in this topic but im pretty sure it has. In relation to the 7 trumpets, it in a way relates to the Cortana letters written in 1999. Im sorry I have forgotten alot of informtation and I hope someone can please correct me, but she said something about " The tru7h"

Like you said the number 7 is bungies favorite number.

You do realize you already posted that, and that I already replied right?

Anyway, Cortana, I believe, is going to betray Cheif. It all adds up, with her being the Halo game's interpretation of Judas.

People can believe that there are no, or little religious elements all they want, but the fact of the matter is, Bungie is using religious themes.

Writing Lead of Whisper Studios. Check out Heron!

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

Maybe Gravemind isn't killed by the Halos, so Chief needs him to come to the Ark and finish the fight for once, side by side with his Spartan-IIs, and Ackerson's SPartan-IIIs...along with legions of Elites, Grunts, and hunters.

How kick ass would that battle be?

I don't think its a coincidence. Bungie is using religious and biblical aspects in their games, esspecially Halo. There are other games that you can relate religious aspects to sure, but not near as many as Halo. If this is a coincidence, its one hell of a coincidence seeing as it all fits together.

I have done this theory in june no offense except for the judas part.here are some more religous thingsAs you already know earth is the ark, Now go back to your days in sunday school,Noah built an ark to save some animals lives from what...think...a flood. see any relation to an enemy, now the flood that hit earth which if you please is halo it was done by god to cleanse the earth which is like halo cleansing the universe. Now the forerunners dubbed earth the ark because if smart enough to create a weapon with halos power you should be smart enough to build a shelter. And noahs ark was a shelter for the animals. why i think this goes with noahs ark is the word halo, its highly religous and bungie has developed halo with religous concepts. When the people wrote the bible they could of interpreted the forerunners as gods and based a religion off of it. look everything falls into place. Hear me out for another paragraph.in the h2 soundtrack there is a song called the road to zosa. zosa is an african city on the equator. now cut the equator from the earth what does that make . yep you guessed it a ring.now a mountain in the background of the halo 3 trailer has been confirmed as zosa in the h3 trailer by a mountain confirmed by bungie as mt. killamanjaro. which is right by ...Zosa, meanig if the equator was cut out it would be on it.a third thing is the cortana letters. She states that she has stood with a golden angel[hey in the h3 trailer masterchief has golden armor ,coincedence???]and has stood at the edge of destruction[sounds like standing at the thing in halo 3 trailer]and the final thing she says t.s. eliott is wrong.in a poem by ts eliott he states in the last stanza "but not with a bang but with a whimper', this is how the world ends.''sounds familiar yes that is also in the trailer.
