you remember in halo 1 when you had the feeling of complete isolation and desperation, where you felt that you were the last hope for humanity. any marines you found were fighting for their lives and would have surely died had you not shown up. the covenant was relentlessly agressive, suppressed you with fire and annihilated any human caught in the crossfire. without hesitation they forced you from cover and tried to end your life, all the while looking like a savage band of animals

these feelings were sorely missing from halo 2. the marines were overconfident and sounded as if the war was mearly a walk in the park and that they would surely survive. the aliens were docile, too eager to take cover, not nearly as agressive and simply allowed you to set up where you wanted and take the prime shots. the also seemed as though they were afraid of the chief. all in all the dialouge did nothing for the immersive feeling of desperation that halo 1 gave.

in halo 3 we need powerful dialouge that plays upon these emotions. we need agressive AI that forces you to move and think rather than the other way around. we need desperate characters that need you to survive. and we need elites that savour the chance to battle you and are animalistic and hunter-like that stalk and move...much like the halo 2 trailer at E3..you remeber the famous "bet you cant stick it part"

The one thing I missed most was the "scared" humans. The crewmembers would shout things like "I'm such a cowarldy fool!" and cover their heads and such. Now all the humans are "YEAH I'M INVINCIBLE WOOT!" idiots...

I can just picture Mechalord reading his post to a group of Halo fans at GameStop in real life: loud, halting speech, his pimpled face turning red with anger at weak noobs, wildly gesticulating and banging the counter to drive his point home, stroking his tiny teen mustache like Halo Hitler. You need a girlfriend buddy.

Correct me if im wrong, but the humans in Halo CE were more like a space ship crew right? I mean they werent really meant for close combat and therefore they were freaked out by it, however in Halo 2 they are marines who are trained for that type of combat. Plus it wouldnt seem exactly right for the supposedly bad ass ODST's or whatever they are called to be grabbing their heads in fear.
Again I might be wrong but that was the impression that I got anyways

Good point. Still, if you were some random marine watching that huge Scarab tear apart the city, wouldn't you be a little afraid?

  • 07.23.2006 7:59 AM PDT

Yeah, the humans in halo 1 were the personnel of the Pillar of Autumn, but I'm pretty sure that the actual marines, not the guys with just pistols, were trained for combat.

I agree with this. Especially the ODST people they are like the real 82nd airborne from Bragg.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

They were afaid of the scarab if you remmber these lines.

MARINE: See this face, it's terror!

SGT. Banks: Marine, did I give you permission to -blam!-?!

They did have the odd cowardly Marine.

The marines in Halo were confident, but not insanely confident. Remember this:

STAY BACK!!! YOU'RE NOT TURNIN' ME INTO ONE OF THOSE THIIINGSS!!!! GET AWAY FROM MEEEEE!!!! GHAA HA AAHHH!!! FIND YOUR OWN HIDING SPOT!!! They're dead... THEY'RE ALL DEAD!!!!!!!

You are exactly right. I always felt that there was something missing from Halo 2, but i couldn't quite place it. I agree one hundred percent with you.

I mean, come on! Your one of the last of hundreds of spartans fighting for the sake of humanity! How could there be no emotion, cowardace, and heroism in that? I REALLY hope Halo 3 has a good emotional storyline that is combined into the AI and gameplay. Halo 2 was an awesome game, Halo 3 will be awesome too, I have doubt about that.

I agree... I just wasn't feeling it with halo 2 the same.

  • 07.23.2006 10:09 AM PDT

The only part I would disagree somewhat is of the aliens being afraid. If some ass kicking machine obliterated a planet and you ran into him face to face, how fearless would you be?

I agree with the topic creator. Hopefully that feeling in Halo will be there by Halo 3. I'm pretty sure Earth's forces are scattered and disorganized by then, with the Covenant occupying the planet and all.

I thought POA had some of the best soldiers on Reach ( it was in the booklet I think.) Also there wasn't enough actual suspense building. On halo 1 when you see the flood you are fight ing the covenant and cant make it out very well, but when you go inside there is all of the dead covies, and that crazy marine who keeps shooting you and talking about the flood attacking them. That made me almost too scared tol play that level alone. But in Halo 2 there's too much action, and it's not as scary, it's like oh no the flood... boom boom... nvm.

I loved that level for that crazy stuff. The downed pelican with the garbled transmissions, odd friendly blips on the radar, the occasional shadow of a marine illuminated on the cliffs... and that's just outside! Then you come across the scene of the grunts and jackals hauling ass away from frag explosions and assault rifle fire... but nothing's there. The green slime, eerie music... that was an awesome level.

The Master of Stealth ......I am the SILENCE

ok considering everyone in thiis topic has posted wewll thought threads u havev all missed the MAIN obvious rerason for te marines being more confident

if you jusst stick wit what happens in the games its unuderstandabale simply because in halo 1 we get the up on the cov at teh end we blow up halo oand wwe win the first mjor battle against the cov

if you taake the books into account since halo 1 we have blow up a rinig blow up thousands of ships stoolen info and disrupted the lines imensly

so which ever waya u look at it the reason thhe marines are more bgheaded is because they have in their own minds at least reason to be

and sorry for the typingn my keyboard is buggerd

  • 07.23.2006 10:53 AM PDT
