While I was on HBO, I was reading the description of the Forerunners and how they either died out, went into hiding or were "enslaved". Now, considering that the grunts and the engineers are the lowest form in the Covenant hierachy, it makes sense that the Prophets would try to manipulate the rest of the Covenant into thinking that they themselves are the true links to the Forerunners. Also, on the grunts homeworld, there are "stepping stones" that are mentioned also on HBO. Hmmm. What are these "stepping stones" and how do they connect the grunts and forerunners. Also, someone on these forums mentioned about finding a picture of a forerunner in The Silent Cartographer. Now, that very picture looked eerily similar to a grunt in size and some minor features. Any other ideas?

Its a very good theory, funny one aswell, But if they were the forerunner, I think that Halos enviroment wouldve been full of methane, for a more confortable enviroment. The Grunts probably were and still are a slave race, maybe they had some relation with the Forerunner though. Such as assisting them in battle, or being slaves to the Forerunners aswell. One things for sure though, thy are NOT smart creatures, as it says in the books. Theyre as smart as dogs ( so the book says, but ofcourse it is exagurated, i sure theyre smarter )

The prophets have some telekinetic abilites, which may include a sort of memory power, that erases or severes memories in a target's mind. :S Just speculation. But, the grunts speak English.......

Ahhhhhh. You do have a point. But I think that dogs are smarter. And cats are even smarter, no questions asked.

No, Grunts don't speak English, Chief's got a translator. That's mentioned in Fall of Reach. Next, its possible, but highly unlikely concidering grunds r stupid and the forerunners were highly intellegent.

im gonna disagree with that theory. I just like to start by saying i dont want anybody to feel flamed or anything but the grunts are lazy and stupid. Throughout the books and game they just downright stupid and content to just sleep on the hob. 343 Guilty spark says "im glad to see some of the forerunner survived to reproduce" when hes speaking to you during the library. Guilty spark also acts as if he knows you and your species throught out the library all the way to the Maw. Also the monitor actually does speak english. Nice thinking but theres more evidence against your theory than for your theory. Theres alot more evidence saying that the forerunner are human or strongly resemble humans.

Could the flood be a humans that devolved over time, or even better, could the grunts have used the humans as experiments, and made the flood?

no the "human-forerunner" theory is so old that most people have lost interest in it, so its not new, (sorry)

the grunt one isnt bad, and i do agree with why didnt they make halo with methane environment, but who said that the grunts never evolved into the methane breathers they are now

your theory is a very good one it cant be right because there is too much evidence against it, for example grunts are lazy and thick and as you know animals inherit DNA and characteristics from parents so the highly intelligent fore runners could not have devolved into slobs that run in the slightest form of danger. Even though it is an old theory i believe the human theory is correct becuase the guilty spark always talks as though he knows the human race and also he says thats amazing your weapons actually effect the flood suggesting that the humans have some long lost memory and can build weapons that effect the things that their ancestors created

Thats true about Guilty spark and also on the maw if you go up to the wall thing where the health pack is at you'll here him say I can't beleave its been that long there is so much [u]NEW[u] history here and when you near the last one other the openings that you have you shoot, you can here him say i can't beleave you would want to destory all this [u]NEW[u] knowledge and finaly he says something like must finsh the uploading to update.... And in the books it says the closer the covenant get to earth, that the more Forrunner Technology they find gets. So i think the Forrunners call Earth Home once too but had to leave for some reason . And where do you think 343 Guilty Spark is going?

And for those of you that have never read the books, just have read little things here and there, please don't try and look smart. Its not that hard to read 3 books and realy good books too.

Ahh, and Hail the Great Caboose.

These are all very good theories. Personally though, I'd have to go with the human = forerunner theory. Simply because of the fact that the humans are a very intelligent species. We invent our technology, rather than the covenant who use forerunner technology, technology they've found and not invented by covenant. And in the halo storyline, the covenant and the mysterious forerunners are the only intelligent alien species we, as humans, know about. In this case, humans and the forerunners are the only species that have created their own technology. Perhaps there is a link between humans and the forerunners. It is also significant that 343 Guilty Spark speaks english.

My theory of everything

The forerunner were an interstellar empire that like all interstellar empires occasionally experiences either domestic or foreign wars, so they created the flood as a bio weapon. Of course, like many of our attempts to use biology for our own means, the flood were too dangerous and got away from it's creators but was then contained (343GS mentioned that samples were kept after the LAST catastrophic outbreak, implying that there were more than one). For whatever reason, perhaps a sense of ethics, they kept the flood alive rather than exterminating them. But they built the Halo rings to prevent them spreading through the galaxy and then infecting other galaxies. They probably figured it was better to kill off the Milky Way in the event of an outbreak than to let the whole universe get infected. They then either died or left, though I think they probably felt it was safer to leave this galaxy, what with the Halo rings and the flood. They left behind all sorts of artifacts on various planets, including Reach and Sigma Octanus. Later, species such as humans and the Prophets established their own civilizations (it's possible that the Forerunner were in the habit of engineering new life forms such as us and the covenant. After all, they created the Flood, and we already have the ability to make new microbes. If so, the Forerunner may have left their creations on planets to fend for themselves. Halo is almost as old as humanity itself.) Though the humans were unaware of the presence of the Forerunner, the Prophets learned of them through the abandoned artifacts and came to believe they were their creators (which indeed they would be if the sentient races were engineered), and formed a fundamentalist religion in which any who did not acknowledge the greatness of the Forerunner were an abomination and must be destroyed (the Covenant make frequent references to one of our greatest sins being our ignorance during ship-to-ship communications in battle). I have not seen any information regarding the other races of the Covenant and their beliefs before the Prophets showed up, though it is possible that they knew of the Forerunner, or were simply conquered and assimilated into their army. Why they have chosen to destroy us outright instead is anyone's guess. Maybe something about us makes us unsuitable for cannon fodder along with the grunts and jackals. Who knows. Anyway, that's the gist of it. If you have anything that might be relevant to this or contradictory to it, let me know.

Very well put. I think you are right about the fact about forerunner creating the flood for biological warfare purposes. I personally think though, that the humans might be descendants of the forerunners, simply because like I have said before, the human's high intelligence. For example: Of all the different species that the humans have encountered, the grunts, the jackals, the elites, the prophets, etc. have not have the ability to create their own technology, thus using forerunner technology instead. What I'm trying to say here is that out of, lets say 8-10 species (all the covenant species combined and the humans), the humans are the only species that have the intelligence to create their own weaponry. Since the forerunners most likely have invented their own technology, perhaps the forerunners are the humans, the most intelligent species in the galaxy. I don't know how the humans might have gotten to earth, and your theory might sound a little more logical, but this is simply my theory and who I personally think the Forerunners are. Hopefully we are gonna find out who the forerunners are in Halo 2, because I have been wondering who the forerunners might be for some time. Anybody have something to comment on?

Yes, the argument can go either way just as easily. There has been a lot of speculation on whether humans were a group of Forerunners that were left behind or planted on Earth. In an interstellar empire you would expect some handful of people to accidentally wind up stranded somewhere. If there were enough, they would be fruitful and multiply. I also like the idea of it being accidental because very little Forerunner tech would be stranded with them, so there would be little or no evidence for us on Earth once enough time passed.

Wait wait wait... If the cheif has a translator... Then why does it not translate elites, jackles, hunters.... Hm.... Probably made that up so it made sense. Grunts so funny, who cares...
