One thing that bothers me is when people post their join date in their sig. No offense to any of you who do that, but it just gets on my nerves in general. We could care less about how long your other account has been here.

*deletes join date* You just opened my eyes to reality, I thank you.

  • 07.24.2006 2:23 PM PDT

All the earlier join date means that there is less of a chance that people are going to remember you when you were an -blam!-. Plain and simple; and it pretty much goes from everyone.

I'll put it like this. The people who you don't need respect from will look at your join date. The ones that you should try to get respect from; they'll look at your posts.

People are the problem. Lack of people would be the obvious solution, but that wouldn't really work in the grand scheme of things.

Sometimes I am tempted to at least give that alternative a fair shake.

Then I remember that I would end up in prison... So the idea is "shelved" until we can work out that little problem.

Use shelves, eh? Yes.. That would hide the bodies, wouldn't it?

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Trust me. If there was a way to simply "fix" disrespect, I'd be heading to the news outlets right now.

  • 07.24.2006 9:41 PM PDT

I don't see anyway to fix it. Except for the banning of almost every member here, which I am totally down for...

The Frozen Minority - The most infamous clan borne from the Seventh Column.

People naturally discriminate. You may not like it, but it is completely true. They will attack the first thing they see in order to undermine your credibility.

They can't attack your skin colour, accent (unless on Xbox LIVE), hair colour, religious stance, physical ability or nationality simply by looking at your post. They can, however, attack your join date. Simply because it is often the only thing they can attack.

Nothing will stop it, so your best bet would be to ignore it. Social conditioning is almost impossible to erase, especially in an argument of the internet.

Systematic execution of every discriminating member might begin to help, but that brings a whole new set of problems with it.

Hey know, lets not get into a discussion about someone becoming a moderator before you. This is not the thread for that. Now, lets get back on topic.

Perhaps you didn't understand the tone of my post, but I was joking.

Then again, maybe you did understand and now I am the one foolishly taking you seriously. D'oh!

Anyway, I agree with you. Member date is not important.

Pardon Halifax. It takes one awhile to understand and appreciate his "subtle" sense of humor.

Member since dates are rarely accurate. I've been going to B.net for longer than like half the mods member since dates. But, I didn't actually join the site till the date shown. So, another prime example of the the dates bein t3h 5uck.

Like I stated before, would there possibley be a way for Achronos make the member since date be invisible like he did with the post counter?

  • 07.25.2006 8:43 AM PDT

I don't want the "Member Since" date to go away. Why? Well, look at my name; dmbfan09. That 09 is there for a reason, and that is because it is my lucky number. Now look at my "Member Since" date. Yeah, I want to keep that visible!

Although my join date says 2004, I was really here since 1987. I just kinda watched the forums for a bit, never talked much.

I would imagine that it is possible, but I do use it in what I consider to be a positive manner.

If I notice someone violating the rules and they have a recent join date, depending on their style and the type of rule violation I can take two very different courses of action.

* If their mistake seems to be because they are new and were unaware of the rules, I advise them of the error, direct them to the rules and recommend that they read and follow them in the future. I also take a moment to welcome them to the site and the community.

* If their actions appear to be someone who has just created another account in order to spam, flood, harass or disrupt, I simply drop the hammer and keep moving.

There are subtle signs that can put someone into one of those two groups. Now without the ability to see that someone might be new and unaware of their mistakes, the other moderators and I might not be able to "warn and welcome" a new member and turn their mistake into a positive learning experience.

So, I don't mind the "member since" feature. I use it to to tell me one simple thing... how long has a member been a member.

I try not to use it to make assumptions or draw conclusions as to their value or status as a member, but only to know how long they've been around.

Yes, but like me. Would you assume that I would be from 7/16? Or an earlier member?

Now that's dedication. You were a Bungie fan before Bungie even existed.

I would somewhat agree to the idea of getting rid of "Member Since" dates. Then again, I have never experienced (or can't remember experiencing) the same kind of discriminance being described here. But I'd have to hand this to Banshee Baron:

It's Funny-

My join date has me as an 06'er and I do recieve harassment for it. Despite the fact that I was an avid poster in H3 forum (that one thread with my crazy theory) and I am always bringing people evidence and quotes and good comments and compliments. But I only get the "You're from 2006 you n_ _b", when in fact they're the ones who are the being the whiny adolescent with preteen problems. I'm almost 20 years old. If you expect me to take smack talk from some kid who thinks he owns the place based on his join date, then you can stop right there and get the heck over yourself.

Have you ever been flamed for being new and having people Like you? The first time I went to the flood, the nice people there welcomed me in open arms, and me being the person that I am, became natural with them. I made jokes, good conversation, an overall good time. Then.....the "veterans" come in, and thought I was getting too much attention because I was an 06'er and suggested I leave. Pfft. Please. This isn't your forum. It's not even ours. It's a community. We live and learn from each other, not draw lines based on join date.

M3 Roki7, I'm with you. I still want my join date up though, because I want people to understand that an 06'er is just as capable as posting intelligently as an 05'er.

Come 2007, if anyone of us 06'ers ever gives any new 07 members any form of trouble, you will recieve a smack to the face by my custom made "Frankie" frisbee.

You see, even though Mabian and I joined at roughly the same time I really never posted until about June of '05. So in many peoples eyes I didn't know what I was talking about. The cool thing though was as I floated through some of the other forums the mods and quite a few of the older members gave me some good advice and helped me along. They had enough sense to look past my "Member Since" date. Really that is what the community truly needs. More people like that.

Oh and Mabian the reason you don't remember the same kind of discriminance is because we used to float around Zanzibar quite a bit. There was so much discriminance there you couldn't tell one from another. It all just ran into one big ball of ignorance and hate.

In that case it would seem we are at a loss. My lab exploded a month ago...so the cure for human nature is lost, that is if it was ever found in the first place. We'll just be floating along, hoping that we can find more people who don't judge by that date, but simply the content of one's post(s).

True, though I think another reason was that I came, went, then came again. I became active in June in the main forums, then left to go to groups, then came back sometime in August or September I think. Sometimes a few months (even a few months spent outside of the main forums) is all it takes for people to think you fully understand what is going on.

  • 07.25.2006 10:29 AM PDT

Speaking as someone who did join in '06 for the first time I find that I get ignored more than I do flamed. Granted I've only posted a couple of times but each time it was as if Id never even said anything. For example, I posted what I thought was an interesting, thought provoking topic in the Halo 3 Forum. It was completely ignored while topics such as "how do elites eat" and "make H3 for the regular Xbox" received more attention. Whether this gets chalked up to the fact that Im a new member or the immaturity of the members in the forum right now I cant say. I do, however, agree that recent members are capable of intelligent, thought provoking contribution. Perhaps it should be my personal crusade to prove myself right. Now if I could only get someone to read a post . . .

God forbid you send me one of those I was checking for cool gamers and saw you messages too, I will scream to the top of my lungs and smash this damn screen/BlackBerry to pieces! You've been warned -_-

Sometimes they can see you becoming a minor ninja. I takes about 2 active years in Bnet. That's what I observed.

Pfft. You guys and your new people.

06'ers are just as capable of providing good, if not better, content than you supposed "veterans."

And those 06'ers are who you...And?...Seriously [Removed] some 06'ers are cool, but the old flood was a lot better...(Think back in 05 for all you who joined before this year)

Although the guy apologized later on what he had said, this is a prime example of what is going on. I removed the names for their saftey.
