I was think abit about all the speculation of what Gravemind was asking of Cortana. What did he want to know? But I think I found a simple answer to this.
In the High Charity level of Halo 2, Cortana mentions that the Forerunner ship in the middle of the city is the power source of High Charity. As we all know, Truth takes the ship with Chief in it and slipspace to Earth. So this would let us assume that High Charity is now without power. And also through evidence in the last cutscene between Cortana and Gravemind shows that the rooms were very dark, also showing that High Charity is without power.
Now Gravemind, being a Flood (or most evidence shows he is), what would the one thing he/she/it would want most? Some of you would answer the location of Earth: big Flood buffet. Gravemind would want to go there and it would help the Flood get a foothold in the universe again. But High Charity is without power maing its slispace engines worthless. This is where Cortana comes in: Cortana with her vast knowledge of Covenant tech would be the best person (umm AI) for the job for finding away to bring power back to High Charity.
Gravemind is using Cortana to make High Charity slipspace capable again; allowing for
Gravemind and the Flood to get to Earth.
EDIT: Another possible reason why Gravemind would want to get to Earth would be for the Ark. As we know, the Ark is capable of remote activating all the Halos. Assuming the Ark is on the Earth (I doubt that big Forerunner structure in the H3 trailer is a Forerunner version of Burger King), wouldn't Gravemind want to disable/destory the largest threat to the Flood's on going existance? The answer is yes.
