I'm not sure if this has been posted...

but don't you all think that maybe Gravemind showed Cortana the way the world "ended" when the rings were first set off by the forerunners?

I'm blue da ba di da ba dai!

What would be his purpose for doing that?

I have no idea.

But it would explain why she said those words in the trailer.

Makes the most sense to me, out of any of the guesses.

that which is not dead can eternal lie, but with strange aeons even death may die.

its possilbe, because you cant here a "bang" in space, because there is no sound.

That brings up an interesting point. I get sick of movies and video games that play sounds in space. Air carries sound. Air-less environments (space) do not.

But still... I think Gravemind was around for the first halo detonation. He survived it. And he continues to maintain the flood.

To make friends, Duh =3

Also seven "bang"s large enough to destroy all (sentinent) life in the galaxy would probably be easy enought to notice without the noise.

Good idea. its possible. Cortana said, "I know your past... your future." Could be...
Gravemind also said something like, "I have listened through rock, and steal, and time..." (not sure if that's correct). I'm not sure how he could show her though. Perhaps uplinking his memory to her or something...

Of course this a lot of speculation.

It's been said before the rings do not kill the flood. Gravemind, in his current form, may have been around - although I doubt it.

The Flood 'construct' their leaders. The Halo's kill everything BUT THE FLOOD, but without food, it forces the flood to deevolve into their least sophisticated form. Why? Because Halo kills their food, not them. Without food, they have to degenerate back into their most basic form and hibernate effectively starting their entire race over (though, since the first game we've seen just how quickly they can evolve and populate their ranks with thousands of warriors).

So as per Gravemind being around, no idea. But there was nothing to survive but the starvation. It seems like he probably would have starved and devolved back into the collective mindlessness, but who knows for sure. But do not think that Halo has any effect directly on the flood, as they do not.

No of course not. You missed the main point though... that Gravemind has shown Cortana the end of the world... as it was when the Forerunners destroyed life.

In his mind, he has recorded through rock and stone and time and so on...

Also, remember the flood steal the thoughts of the people they takeover.

Not to mention he is a huge being and had a lot of alone time to think about it all.

  • 07.25.2006 1:10 PM PDT

So if the Halos are selective in what they destroy (and we know they are) is it possible that Cortana somehow recalibrates them to destroy only the flood? Maybe it's something she has to do from inside the ark. Of course all this is assuming she hasn't completely lost her mind and that you can somehow retreive her. I'll leave all that speculation up to someone else.

“To say more would spoil be it’s overall its a game that needs to be played.” - Aristotle

Hmm... this is actualy plausible. Anybody who read the books knows that Cortana is booted into the MCs systems via a Neural Lace (apologies for spelling). This allows her to 'live' in his armor- upgrade his reflexes, share information, and, of course, show him images. What if what the MC saw in the trailer was footage, taken by a Forerunner in the past, and stored inside the Ark and beamed to all the Halos for storage into it's memory banks? What if Cortana was sending him that video, with her/GM in the beackround along with all of the Covie cruisers added in to give a 'future activation' effect, as a type of warning as to what could happen if the Ark is activated again? It is always possible that Cortana can always be with him via the link, and if that is what happened, then we could be in for a MAJOR plot twist somewhere along the way, similar to GM plugging the MC's mind full of images during combat to get him killed. Very dangerous.

(First off, sorry for the double post... but the near-proven truth is:)

It mentions in the books/game that it takes a TREMENDOUS amount of energy from energy/plasma based weapons to kill the flood, as you have noticed while trying to kill them using Covie tech. It has been theorised that the sentinals were special-produced, and only they were effective. But also notice, the sentinals have VERY low batteries, and run out quickly. Nothing the Forerunners had in enegry-base was easy and long-lasting enough. Thus, they had to settle for using the Halos to kill all they feed on to stop them. Sadly, it doesn't work the first time, and the Flood were allowed to live. It would be impossible to kill the Flood using the Halos, especialy now that Alpha Halo has been knocked out of the grid. The Halos are now vitrualy useless, they do not make the entire galaxy void, and that gives the Flood a chance to send out their vengance once again, even if it was activated. In this next game, I doubt the actual HALOS will play much of a role at all. I'm fairly sure it will focus mostly on the Ark.

I'm not sure that I agree with Snakie on that concept but if it's possible and hasn't been disproven but other facts I won't criticize you. I haven't read the books but the fact that Cortana can be linked to a neural lace would make the theory that Gravemind showed Cortana a memory more possible. Even if it's unlikely, it's possible.

This makes you have to think what Gravemind wanted to ask Cortana ( from the video sequence after the Halo2 credits).

If Cortana is a computer program, why cant she just transmit herself to Earth?

Also, you can't hear anything in space which is why when the Arbiter recounts the destruction of Alpha Halo the bang has been removed, all you can hear is the atmosphere rushing past.

Cortana is to far it would take year before her like you said or a message come to earth.

It does make you wonder... I mean, if the GM can somehow transmit a signal to the MCs neural lace to have him shut down (some kind of toxin introduced to his blood stream via the lace, so that he could be knocked out if he went rampant?) then it is completely possible that GM could grab control of the MCs body... it's a scary thought, talk about Flood Juggernaut now!!!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?! With the power of the transmission gear in the MCs MJOLNIR armor, coupled with the AMAZING comunications grid on Halo, plus the ability to send messages through slipspace to their destination, it wouldn't take but 10-30 minutes.
