Freedom isn't free. Nor does it come with ease. So is it really worth fighting for? Is it worth dying for?

I think we should be able to command marines and other soldiers in Halo 2. Like in Rainbow Six and Socom Navy Seals.

halo isn't a rainbow six. the AI sould be good enough to think for itself. but the marines should react on things you do.

I think that the AI should be good enough as well, but a feature wouldn't hurt. Have you ever noticed in the first Halo that a lot of the Marines are trigger happy? For example, I was playing the Truth and Reconciliation level today and while I was trying to be stealthy and snipe the unsuspecting Covies, the Marines decided to go in John Woo-style with guns-a-blazin'. It completely screwed up my strategy. Another instance, same level, I was leading Keyes to safety and he kept running in front of me as if he was trying protect me. So he died a couple times. And to make matters worse, I was trying to Frag and Clear a room full of Covies but a stupid Marine thought he would beat me to the punch. His grenade lands right at my feet and kills me. All he said was, "Sorry. My bad." I think it would be nice to have an emergency command option. Play Freedom Fighters and you'll see my idea of a good command system. Then you could tell marines to hold their position so you can scout the area first so they don't die in vain. Any thoughts??

Nah, i like halo's marines the way they are. The game gets to complicated this way, and most people wouldnt bother ordering them probably just let them die. And besides how would you control them?

the marines should see if you are trying to be stelth. that would be the solution. it wouldn't be complicated but your problem would be gone.

I know a way of commanding them you look at them with the target-thingy(recale or somthing) wait a sec then it turns green or something then you push X, then then the game pauses then a screen comes up with options to command all of them or 1 of them by Pushing up or down to change. And use the botten Y X B A to tell them to follow u, stay, go somewhere or retreat.(BUNGIE TAKE MY IDEA PLEASE) If that could happen that would be sooo cool.

If only.....
Let's hope that is the case this time around.

However, I realized that in the E3 demo (single-player) the marines are capable of strategic actions. In the demo, they knew how to "Frag and Clear", but I hope they don't do that when you are in the room they are clearing.

Personally, I think Monkey's idea is a little too complicated to do in a fast pace game. It would take to long to do a simple command. I think that they should utilize the D-Pad for the commands.

Up - Attack at Will
Right - Frag and Clear
Left - Retreat
Down - Defend Area

i would like basic commands, like hold position, come with me would be good. it would also be cool if you could do more, like order marines to change weapons and take medpacks.

but that might change the game too much. not sure.

I like where Bungie Spartan is coming from with the D-Pad commands. I mean I would be happy with that. It would add a nice touch to the game.

yup, the ability to command marines would be awesome. But it should be simple commands only, such as hold positions ( i really miss that option in halo ) and follow me (another option i really miss in halo).

I've played other games where you can order you 'subordinates' around and I loved it. I think the idea of using the D-pad would be good. I never use it to move around or anything, I forgot if it's to look around or to move.

What does any one think about being able to talk to the marines? Like with a headset.

I voted no, but if the commands were made simple enough I'd say yes. One way that would be good is like Spartan's voice recognition commands. Still i don't think that we'd see that in Halo 2. It would be just as easy to use the directional pad for four simple commands.

if they did have easy commands like frag and clear, hold back and stuff like that it would be cool

I disagree it would turn out too much like rainbow six and all games like that and you wouldn't have enough fast paced action while the marines are waiting for you to give them commands

up-follow me

down-hold position

left-at ease(whatever they want to do)

right-evac(a pelican is called and they are extracted)

What do you think?

It is nothing that is hopelessly complicated.

I think you should be able to make suggestions to the marines, but I'd like to see the marines intelligent enough so that you don't have to issue them orders. Worrying about what they're doing will take away from your own staying-alive concentration.

That sounds good to me except the EVAC command. How about a Stealth option where the marines follow you but don't fire unless you fire or they are fired upon?

While i'm tempted to say yes, I think it has the potential to change the Halo experience too much. Which is really my only fear as far as Halo 2. Despite good previews and everyone saying that it feels like a "natural-extension" of Halo, I still worry that Bungie is going to be flustered or overwhelmed and just throw in a ton of features - even though they have been blunt and said they will not - it's still a legitmate concern in my mind. Then again at the same time I have little doubt that Halo 2 will fail to be the best FPS yet... and even if it's not, i'll deny it to my death. Anyway, point being - I fear that by adding the ability to control the marines it might take away from their persona, take away from the feel of Halo (which we all love) and bog down the game experience and excitement with remedial and tedious commands. I was happy with the way Halo's marines interacted, i hated seeing them roll onto a grenade just like everyone else, but that's the reality of war (...?). So no.

Like everyone is saying, yeah i think it would change the halo experience too much. Most likely it would break the fast paced action of the game if you had the responsibility of baby sitting a bunch of marines. That kind of stuff should be saved for RTS games and not FPS games.

i think we should just leave it to Bungie to write some good AI scripts for the marines and hope that Halo 2 sets a new standard in friendly AI's in video games. All i know is that i'll be happy if the marines are better in Halo 2 that Halo:CE, the dumb bastards. "Ah! It burns!"

"Constantly talking isn't necessarily communicating"

I agree with pretty much everything Tartarus says.

Whilst the game would certainly be improved if the Marines didn't die so easily and quickly, it would remove some of their personality to no longer allow them to make their own decisions.

DIdn't someone say - it may have been on one of Frankie's updates - that they were aiming to have more interaction with Marines? And what about the ODSTs?

Im all for very simple commands, but I wouldn't want this game to become to squad based.
