Maybe with the d-pad you could go left and right to scroll through a few commands like follow me, stay here, stealth, storm area, retreat, frag and clear, hide for ambush, and "free will". That's only eight commands, it wouldn't take long to hit left or right seven times. And you could hit up to confirm. But maybe you could set a command to the down button because if the covies are slaughtering everyone you could just hit the down button to retreat. And that would shorten the scrolling from seven to six.

How 'bout it?

the marines should see if you are trying to be stelth. that would be the solution. it wouldn't be complicated but your problem would be gone.

lmao lmao. From what I've read i guys don't know much about artificial intelligence. Its a very complicated thing. ai is made to respond to the situation though or make u believe that it is (if its crappy ai). Making them notice what ur doing and copy or go with the flow of what the player is doing would be very very difficult to do. U see ai usually responds to the enemy notto u. Unless u get into a vehicle then if ur close to it its reactions differ making the ai/marine getting into ur warthog. (hmmm...) did u guys forget in e3 2003 halo2 demo that a marine got in the driver seat and drove mc. I think all that needs to be done is give the ai the same stuff as in halo2 except when it comes to vehicles. So they respond to the vehicle and say u want to be gunner just hop in the gunner seat on the warthog and have a marine drive u. Thats all that really needs to be done and thats enough to do. It would be the best thing in my opinion anyway. Cause sometimes I like havin marines open fire while I go pull some sam fisher and flank the covenant giving them no time to react just fall on the ground in pools of blood.

That could make for the one really interesting sequence of events. That hotshot marine how says "To hell with you and your orders" and charges or does something equally stupid!

Don't forget that you can have "sub-menus" on the D-Pad.

For example. We can use left and right D-Pad to peak. Down on the D-Pad to go prone. (A Button to get back up) and Up on the D-Pad to issue a command. After you press up, you can press in one of the four directions to issue your commands.

Left Thumbstick- Click to crouch(assuming you don't have to hold it the whole time to crouch), hold to go prone.
A Button- Jump, or get up from prone.
Left Thumbstick Again- Double tap in the direction of the wall to get against it, left and right to peak, double tap away from wall to get off, double tap forwards and hold on second tap to sprint.

That way the d-pad could be only for commands.

But of course your way would work also Draerden, mine's just an alternative.

way to complicted ur guys ideas are especially with all the other controls. My (ingenious) idea does not require time or buttons. Therefore I think mine is the most superior. REad my other post and don't forget thats the way it was in halo2 e3 2003 demo.

Has anyone played brute force. It was a good game but i actually found this rather simple squad based game very difficult to use the other charechters in it. I don't like squad. I do hope the A.I. for the marines is boosted though.

dude I thought brute force sucked. Big time. Never tried anything new, never got it anywhere except a $20.00 price tag. I've just been saying just boost up the marine ai to save more time and have u put forth less effort to get less frustrated. Just have it do what I thought and everything should flow fluidly.

Brute Force did suck. I couldn't tell where I or any of my friends were. I liked that it was like a 3rd Person Halo though.

exactly why only my idea would work and makes enough sense plus doesn't take away from gameplay instead mine adds to the sweetness. The others just add to the time taken away from u frustrating urself to remember the stupid commands.

if im not mistaken the AI in halo2 is going to be top notch, however if any of you have played freedom fighters multi player with a freind (1vs1) the action is insane the controls are easy (you use the Y,A,X,B to issue orders) it cycled through the troops under your command and allowed you to do amazing things WILE fighting, my favorite example is when on a mission i assaulted a center outpost from two sides sending half my troops through one side and half throug the other. so simple D pad controls i think would rock... ether way i think it might be to late to add in an order isueing system and i would be happy to have Halo2 as it is now (without unit command).

I don't want to much control over them but like make them like fanout or cover me. You know something like that but not with over the line crap like in RB63

What about a Ghost Recon format. So you can tell marines to either hold, advance or advance at all costs. Also so you can tell them to be in recon, assualt or suppress mode. If you have played Ghost Recon you know what I'm talking about. So any ideas on that?

Thats a very good idea i dare say.....but wich controls could be used to communicate with them....remember taht all the controls would be used for combat and movement.....well who knows?

No matter how easy it is to control the marines it will eliminate the entire war feel that Halo had so much success using. Overally adding commands for marines would be yet another overrated feature that would be the death of Halo 2's success.

It would be ok Only if it was by voice command and nothing to complicated. Like you could tell them to aim there fire a certain way or go hold a place, e.g. "Charge covies at 3 O clock"
but nothing tto complicated. So that u actually dont need to use it but if u need to use a strategy u can tell em to attack a certain way. just so that its natuaral.more eg "Take down covie tank at 2 o clock" "Aim at covies at 5 O clock" and then it woul be cool if the Sargent sadi various things like "You heard the Cheif, get your @$$es over there before I do it for you" But as people mentione this is halo not RS3. It would have to be simple and natural.

I think 'Bungie Spartans' idea is great. I haven't met anyone yet who uses the D-Pad as movement controls. The marines wouldn't get into as much trouble with these commands.

If I was to choose the commands I'd have the following:

Up/Forward - Normal. Whatever previous order you gave them would finish and they would happily go out their business exploring.

Right - Open Fire/Hold Fire. This would be for areas with many foot soldiers. The soldiers would simply fire at any covenant. But most likely go for the most threatening first. If you have this mode on and you press it again then your marines will stop firing. Obviously your marines won't stand there and take fire, I mean if they are going a bit too trigger happy and grenading at any possible opportunity. Then you can make them stand down.

Left - Take cover. Simply tells them to find any cover they can from the fire that you're receiving. Like to hide behind defences and other debry. This would be very effective against Hunters and Wraiths because you could get them to hide while you do the fancy work.

Down/Back - Retreat/Hold the previous area. In other words tell the marines to move back a safe distance from the danger zone so you can take out the enemy without having to worry about taking out some cowaring marine.

I give full sympathy to anyone who has been killed/blown up by fellow marines. It happens on a regular basis in the line of fire.

Commands=NO!

Commands would suck. Although I hated getting fragged by my own marines, I looked back and it was friggin hilarious! I don't want that to go away! In a tense situtation, it was actually funny to get nuked by your own guys. I have played some of the whole squad based games. I didn't like them at all, you would have to basically pause in the middle of the game (very UNrealistic) and issue a command. Plus, what controls would we use? The L&R triggers are gone, so are A, B, X, Y, Black, White and probably the D pad (for peeking, sprinting, etc.). What is left? Then, you have to actually remember what does what in the heat of a battle. No, No, NO!

Better AI is all that is needed.

I think that using the D-pad would be a good idea for issuing commands to marines. I'm tired of the marines screwing up my mission by getting themselves killed or alerting the enemy to our position. With a four command system the gameplay wouldn't suffer at all, since there would be no scrolling, selecting, nor pausing in the middle of gameplay. It would be quick and simple, and if you don't like it, you don't have to use it.

I'd like to make an addition to some of the D-pad suggestions people have made.

While in a vehicle:
Up: Follow the Chief, or charge
Down: Hang back
Right: Get in vehicle
Left: Get out of vehicle

Ok, but if you didn't use it, what would they do? You would have to compensate for this"don not use commands thing", making them incredibly good AI, and you would no longer need commands.

i think the whole AI is way better and that comanding them is a cop out.

And this aint really a game with a slow enough pace!!

No matter how good the artificial intelligence is, it cannot predict what the player wants it to do. In fact, even humans can't always predict what their teammates want to do. That's why people use headsets when playing Live, so that they can communicate and actually use some strategy. That is what the issuing commands would be, communication with the AI for the sake of strategy.

I must admit the first time I was fragged to death by my own marines, it was absolutely hilarious! But the whole thing where the troops give away the position is something that I've never liked. Yeah it does help you improve by being more versitile (switching from stealthy, to full-on rampage) and makes the game more interesting.

The command system on the D-pad (if it existed) wouldn't have to be used if the person didn't have to. But the truth is AI technology is great in its own right, but isn't really upto sensing what you want to happen.

A bit of both will work great!

Also, what would people say about a Halo that is played through the eyes of a marine or an ODST (like having a squad and all) and being able to fight alongside the Master Chief.
