I believe "Ghosts of Choral" (on the way) will basically be Halo 2 in book form. If they follow their previous pattern, that is. "The Fall of Reach" was a story of the Spartan's beginnings, "The Flood" was everything that happened directly after TFoR (also a story line linear to Halo 1's), "First Strike" explained everything immidiately after John's (Master Cheif's) escape (It basically connects Halo Combat Evolved with Halo 2). "The Ghosts of Choral" should delve a little deeper in plot than if you were to just play Halo 2 campaign.
As for the books following the story of the games (or vice versa), the Halo game franchise basically shows a smaller view of the halo universe. There is nothing in the games that discredit the books, and nothing in the books to discredit the games. By reading the books, you are simply given a larger amount of information. The games allow for a quick run through of Master Cheif's interactions with the Covenant, Halo, Flood, and so on.
