Subject: The Profanity Filter. You've Got to be Joking.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

You have got to be kidding me. I've been on this site for over 3 years, and it seems like more and more unnecessary words get added to the filter. Oh, it's all well and good to keep the kids (who technically shouldn't be on the site anyway due to the "Mature" rating of Halo, and most of the people on the site are here because of Halo anyway) from seeing naughty and suggestive words, but words like the equivalent to "female dog" and "sphincter?" Those words have their uses, and to be honest I don't see the equivalent of "sphincter" used maliciously that much (even in the Forums). Not many people even use the word. And derivitives of the word like the equivalent of "uptight" are blammed out as well. It's almost ironic that an applicable adjective of Bungie's profanity filter is also filtered out, isn't it?

I doubt my thread will bring about any changes or will even be concidered by whoever at Bungie reads this, but I felt that it needed to be said. There's a difference between being cautious, and being stupid.

For example:
The 's' Word [refering to feces] is blocked,
But not crap.

There are a lot of redundancies in the Profanity Filter.

Some things like [Sexual prefeance between two males] shouldn't be blocked at all.

Umm, about the -blam!- preference one, yeah it should be blocked. If it wasn't, I gaurantee all the threads would be flooding with people calling each other that. It would be rampant.

*Sgt

I remember only things like the f word and racist terms were blammed. Now we can't say female dog, or sphincter, or anything!

If we have bastards taken away.. aww hell naw

No. It shoudn't. I disagree with you. Therfore, I hate you.

If I remember correctly, Achronos gets the list from MSN and adjusts as necessary. The only thing I can suggest is taking out a thesaurus and finding synonyms for the words that are censored.

yeah, now they simply use the "hey" version. Not only only that, but for someone who actually is, that, it be silly for him to be filtered out.

Anyway, I do understand it though. Female dogs on the other hand....
I find it a great shame that I can no longer -blam!- about things. Now I have to ]rant.

I understand someone being upset if that was their preference. But I swear to you, with all the immaturity of this site, if it were unfilterd, it would be the most used and abused word in every flamer's post.

The word for a person's "preference" has no use on these forums for two reasons:

1. About 99% of the time it's used as an insult.

2. A video game developer's website isn't the place to discuss people's "preferences".

When in doubt, remember:
The Bungie Web Sites and the services provided therein are not to be used to transmit any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable content, as determined by any Bungie Web Sites employee, designee or admin. The words that are censored have been determined objectionable by Bungie Web Site employees, so that's the end of that.

All said and done many times over, hence the sphincter and female dog references. But that's not my point. I can understand why the f-word, s-word, racial slurs, the slang term for "new person," and the attraction between two people of the same sex are blammed, since they're used heavily in flames, and if you censor them, the flames go down because they're not as effective without those words. But the b-word and the word for "uptight?" It's just a waste of time to even bother adding them to the censor list. And yes, the b-word can be used for flames, but most of the time the use of that word carries a jokingly tone, and in this day and age it is rarely used with the intent to truely offend someone.

Now, censoring some of the words for liability and legal issues I can understand, but I doubt "uptight" falls into that catagory. The b-word shouldn't even fall into that catagory.

And please don't mistake my tone. This is just a complaint, laced with some questions and suggestions. I am NOT whining about the fact that I can't say some of the words that I want to say, since I don't use swears that often (or rather, I don't use what I thought were swears that often). I'm not that lazy. I can use different words if I have to. I'm just wondering why some of the more unnecessary words that are in the censor list are even considered bad enough to warrant being censored.

I really do miss the "female dog" word. I didn't use it often in the main forums but I loved calling somebody a -blam!-, stupid -blam!- in groups.

That's one of my points; "female dog" isn't used as a curse anymore. It's a joke!

That is very true. Nor am I saying that it actually should return. I do feel like it. Anyway, it's annoying that the other word for arrogance is filtered. I suppose there is no way to make Y-less version filtered, and the Y-version non filtered.?

But this isn't just a video game developer's website anymore. It's quite the well-rounded community. The fact that we have non-videogame-oriented chapters, as well as the Flood forum, is a good example of why.

For the main forums, the profanity filter is fine the way it is (in my opinion). Now, if there was a way to make it so that the chapters can turn the filter off, I think that would be great (I know it would help in chapters like The Black Chapter).

For the most part. It's a pain to talk about certain issues in the Black Chapter that rightfully warrant the use of certain censored words in order to discuss those issues in depth, since most of the words that mean the same thing are blammed.

Has a Bungie worker seen the Black Chapter at all?

There's a Black Chapter?

And here I thought I was the only Afro-American on this site.........

That's not what it means Iceman. Black as in "not spoken in the main forums".

Oh. [/dissappointment]

*edit* So I assume we all stay away from there because of the filth? Or do we just like the main forums too much?

Does it bother you so much that you can not cuss at someone. Why doesnt everyone just grow up and learn to use big boy words. I could make you feel miserable without ever hinting at a cuss word. Do a little research an learn to make people feel bad intelegently

I wish I could post there more often, but most of the conversations are pretty in depth and I never seem to have time to add to a conversation in the detail I would prefer. A lot of topics are covered in there that aren't allowed on the main forums; politics, religion, etc. I would assume race is an applicable topic, although I haven't run across any threads in there concerning it.

Its good place to find mature conversations that can't be held in the main forums. No need to stop by if you dont have the ability to respect others points of view.

Thank you for clearing that up. I should check it out sometime.
