Subject: The Profanity Filter. You've Got to be Joking.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Does it bother you so much that you can not cuss at someone. Why doesnt everyone just grow up and learn to use big boy words. I could make you feel miserable without ever hinting at a cuss word. Do a little research an learn to make people feel bad intelegently

A swing and a miss.

No, after being on these forums for so long, I know that it's easier to bat down a flamer with words that aren't curses. But there are circumstances where the use of certains words is appropriate, for tonal purposes or even simplicity.

Whatever. I got the kind of responses I expected. Might as well lock the thread.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

The word list in place since April 2004 is an edited version of the one MSN uses. We took out a LOT of stuff - that was an interesting meeting. We've only added a few words since then, and none of the ones you mentioned were "added" after April 2004.

Some stuff remains that you don't agree with. For example, the -blam!- orientation reference is blammed because a large portion of the people who frequent these forums seem to use variations of it as their default insult, usually only proving their own ignorance in the process. The "female dog" reference and various other words demeaning women are removed, and I find no reason to remove them.

I can appreciate the use of a good curse here and there to make a point. But let's be honest - how many people out of the million or so accounts on this forum fit into the category of people who can express a thought and use a curse word to good effect? Most people here have trouble constructing ideas without using curse words. These are the same people who PM me and claim knowledge of my -blam!- preferences and command me to "suck it" when I say something they don't like.

No, unless people magically demonstrate the ability to "curse properly", the banned word list will stay. Now, I very much preferred the old way where the system would censor based on user preference. Unfortunately, since April 2004, that way won't work due to the vastly increased performance we require out of the web site.

On my website we filter out n00b and fanboy. Bungie doesn't, yet somehow I almost never see them here etiher. Does this mean Halo fans are actually more mature than people on other sites? Probably yes.

Not likely.

don't be stupid. Just go to New mombasa and optimatch and you'll see how mature alot of epople on this forum are. It used to be contained in Zanzibar but it's now spread into 2 forums.

Kinda the same thing that would happen in the H3 forum was deleted.

you also see the word Noob in new mombasa all the time and Fanboi/fanboy/f4n801 in the flood.

Yeah just a question out of curiousity for the folks in charge...why did you censor the word for what the germans were called in WW2?

I wouldn't mind just seeing it all go away period.

Until that point in time, however, I will be unable to use the "b-blam!-"s. (1. Lacking in originality) (2. Filled to the point of overflowing) Alas! I shall be forced to find other ways to convey the meanings of words I rarely used in the first place!

The problem with lightening up the Profanity Filter is that it will immidiate be abused. If we think flaming is bad now, just imagine what it would be like if trolls had access to "female dog" and "-blam!- preference" words.

To be honest, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I think the filter works fine. Sure, you're going to have people subvert it, but that's what the moderators are for.

But it's so annoying. My grandfather didn't fight -blam!-s, he fought the political party in charge of Germany at that point.

Besides, Japs and Commies aren't -blamed- out. Unless -blam!-s are because of the Holocaust.

Every group has their bad sides, but "not-see" is just a more common form of insult used by the less-intelligent masses.

But enough with political discussion

dude, you pulled a jesus!

What confuses me is that "female dog" and the male sex organ are -blam!-ed, yet dick has been left alone... well besides the nickname of course... blah nevermind. I guess that's reason enough.

Yeah, i wish you can turn the profanity filter off, for instance one time i meant to use a certain four letter word that starts with C, but as in you do that with a gun. I didnt mean anything vulgar by it at all.

Just little annoyances like that bug me, but i think its more a blessing than a curse, because there are some potty mouths out there.

lol potty mouth...

True story:

Early on in my membership here I made a post using the phrase "gu-hay group" referring to the poor qaulity of the group I created. This is how I talk normally with my brother and friends and whatnot.
A few weeks later I received a PM from a person asking to join my "gu-hay group." They also commented on Rob Lowe's legs and asked my opinion.
I had to ask where they got the idea that I had a group like that and they showed me my post. I was embaressed.

The moral of the story is that word is better off in the filter.

I think that other forms of the word should not be blammed. -blam!-, (well, you know the rest) isn't used as a flaming tool. It sounds too proper. I'll bet that if it was brought back, it wouldn't be abused, less the abuser want to sound like a fool.

The reason for that is because saying stuff like that it is quite rude to talk about it and say the words, especially on a public forum.

Now we get called "communists" instead. I don't think that they even know what a communist is, otherwise they would use the more accurate term term of "fascist" and be done with it.

So if we talked about the US VP, we would call him -blam!- Cheney? That would just be silly.

Probably had to do with politics and religion..

Indeed. In really stupid cases, people use the term and claim to agree with the doctrines and policies of that regime.

Also, it is typically used as an insult/label of someone in authority who has done something that a poster considers an abuse of power.

Now we get called "communists" instead. I don't think that they even know what a communist is, otherwise they would use the more accurate term term of "fascist" and be done with it. Though I look terrible in a black shirt.

Okay I was just curious. Thanks.
