From the threads I've read regarding the issue of multiplayer achievements, most agree they should only be unlockable while playing ranked matches. Now while that sounds good in theory because everyone will know you earned them, it presents a potential problem. Actually it presents a HUGE potential problem.

How many people have been killed as they are about to score the flag by their own teammate, so their knucklehead teammate can score it instead? I would venture to say almost 99.9% of the people who read this have. Now, picture an achievement of 100 Flag scores. Does anyone really think that will work? You KNOW there will be tons of people sniping the flag carrier of their team to swoop in and grab the flag. But the problems don't stop there.

What if one of the achievements is "Stick 100 People" or something to that affect? Can you imagine how annoying it will be in a team slayer match if some yahoo is running around trying to stick people and never fires a shot? There will always be de-levelers and the pieces of crap who go on a suicidal rampage, but adding achievements will add a new breed of annoying players, achievement whores. How can the integrity of matchmaking be kept with this new breed of player?

I can picture it now.

You: Kill the flag carrier. His shield is down!
Teammate: I need ten more headshots for the headshot achievement!
You: Shoot him anywhere! He'll go down!
Teammate: NO! I need headshot kills!
You: He's going to SCORE!
Teammate: I guess I can throw a sticky at him. I need sticky kills too.
You: He's 300 yards away!
Teammate chucks a sticky and it lands 200 yards short of the flag carrier. Flag carrier scores.

I think there should be single player achivements only.

your right, huge problem. Hope it gets addressed......I can't even think of a solution other than to have achievements only in unranked games, but then what is the point.

I guess this goes back to, enter MM with a full party of dedicated-to-the-win cause soldiers

Not everyone can do that. People my age (27) have limited amounts of people to play with due to familes, careers, etc. It's also difficult to coordinate times when you don't see them at school everyday. I can't think of anyway to address it at all. I hope Bungie is looking at this or else MM will get really ugly, really fast. As much as I was into the MM achievements before, I think this alone is reason enough not to have ANY MM achievements.

multiplayer achievements would be difficult, unless they were hidden until you got them. and even people viewing ur profile cant see them, they just see the score. or, i could be so many kills or so many more kills than deaths.

Or if they are, have them really minor, low score achievements, like "win your first game!"-5 pts. Or "Last Hope: Kill an Elite as a Spartan with a human weapon!" -5 pts.

Oh, and all the achievements should be secret. Sure, one could look them up online, but it at least dicourage a few people.

And, of couse, the 0-pt. "gag" achievements like "get killed by a meele while you have the sword!" or "You were killed by the guy with one SMG in a no-grenade game--and you were in the tank!"

There are too many sites out there that list what the secret achievements are for games.

www.xbox360achievements.org usually has the secret achievements for games before they even come out.

The problem is, if your into achievements enough that you would sacrifice the good of the team for them, you would definitely look them up online.

Titan Alumn, do you have something against hitting the quote button?

But my opinion: Keep the Achievements in Campaign Only!!

  • 07.26.2006 11:47 AM PDT

"I came back to life for THIS?!" -Sgt. Johnson

All they'd need to do is make them difficult but not obscure things that help the team out anyway. Almost nobody hurts their team because they were trying to get a killtacular. People are going to try to do it anyway. If they die every time, they're just as foolish as they were before. So, as long as they help the team and are going to be secondary goals anyway, I think they could work. However, I wouldn't suggest too many multiplayer achievements beyond killing sprees/multiple kills, game sprees, and total kills.

As long as it stays simple, there's nothing bad about achievements for some of the medals already in the game. Sure, splatters, snipers, sticks, and beat-downs might encourage destructive strategies, but the 'OMG I can't believe that happened' medals are tough enough and general enough that they could work. Nobody brags about how many total snipes or sticks they got throughout multiple games. However, having a shiny Killtrocity medal would be something that can and should be displayed as an achievement. GRAW has similar MP medals, and I don't think that they have caused any problems or have the capacity to do so.

Those could work I guess, but there are very few that will. You can't make any of the specialty kills (explosive kills, stickies, roadkill, mellees, etc) or objectives (plant bomb, capture flags, carry skull) achievements.

I dont think that it will that much of a problem . To avoid those problems. They should vary on how big the achievement id. Like getting 500 kills would have a bigger reward then 200 flag captures or 100 sticks. Also you should be penalized if you get more than like 50 team kills. That way people will focus harder on killing the other team.

Those who play Halo 3 online will play the way they play(ed) Halo 2 online. Just because there will be achievements, I can't hold it as enough incentive for someone to kill their teamate more than they would in Halo 2 compared to Halo 3. If you're going to be an a-hole while playing, more then likely that is how you play(ed) Halo 2/XBox LIVE, and will continue doing so in the future when you pick up your copy of H3. If you're a legitamate player and like to have fun like me, you'll send a lot of friend invites, so that way you avoid partying up with people who destroy the integrity of the online game by team killing, suiciding, and doing other stupid things. Joining parties and sending friend invites is the #1 way to avoid matching with ignorant players. I always party up.

Leaving the acheivements invisible is a terrible idea, if it's anything like Perfert Dark Zero, then I want to see what types of gametypes I need to play in order to get them. If they were all invisible, I wouldn't have the motivation to try and play enough of a particular gametype to get that achievement.

They have yet to create negative GS achievements. I doubt they ever will. Also, the amount doesn't matter. Most just want the full 1000 out of 1000.

Well what they could do is have SP Achivements only, get GS Points for that. And then have MP Achievements, but don't have GS Points.

Instead have a rank system similar to Battlefield 2: Modern Combat's rank system.

Have all the special kills in SP, but just have Flag captures etc and amount of kills in MP

I have something that *might* work.
Add a feedback option that is somthing along these lines "Player sacrificed larger goals to satisfy personal ones"

I'm sure bungie could come up with better wording.
And if you get that feedback say... 5 times all your acheivements for every game is reset to 0.

That would discourage people.
Or have bungie setup the same sort of thing as they do for Halo 2 cheaters.
You email them with all that stuff and BAM all their achievements are BAM 0!

It will be ten times greater on Halo 3 though. Look. You can still have ranked playlist achievements. They just can't be personal. Team goals are fine. Example: Win 100 ctf matches, Win 100 assault matches. Where the system will get really screwed up is if the achievements in matchmaking become individualized. Example: Score the flag 100 times, Get 100 headshot kills, Get 100 Sticky Kills.

Once again. That's fine. I'm talking about if they make the achievements unlockable only in ranked games or matchmaking games. Custom games are not matchmaking.
