I am not sure if this theory has been stated before but I will give it a shot. *I typed this up a couple of months ago, so i am just reviving it. I find this makes more sense than the Noah's Ark theory. I know it is my opinion but wouldnt it just be lame if the halo trilogy ended with some noahs ark plot? **and by the way if i forget to mention below, whoever posesses That Ark of the Covenant will remain invincible.**

Alright everybody knows the covenant believe in the forerunners which are most likely the humans. And with this said, us as humans, our forerunners are our prophets....Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and so on.(sorry if any of this insults you) And every Christian has a great journey, to receive all the sacrements to get one step closer to heaven. We must abide by God's laws which are the Ten Commandments.

Now since the covenant have prophets (the messenger of their god) they would typically be very religious. To keep their culture and religion alive the prophets must prove to the rest of the covenant that their god does exist and they help guide them into seeking that. Which would be their "great journey". So this is when they meet up with the humans and this creates war. AND we all know most wars have been caused by differences in religion and total control of the holy objects.

As we all know the Arc of the Covenant or AKA the Ten Commands suddenly dissapeard. Covenant means promise. Hence the name covenant for the enemy and hence the name for the prophets Truth and Regret and so on. So now as the evidence adds up it is possible that the covenant have the same religion and same god as us. They believe they must find this arc to find peace for eternity in their heaven and it proves that their religion does exist and the laws the covenant follow are correct. Hence the name great journey. Now most philosophers and archiologists believe the Arc of the Covenant or AKA The Ten Commandments is located somewhere near the middle east and the North Eastern/Eastern tips of Africa. That would be where New Mombasa and zanzibar is located and just to add this little detail in, Mount Kilimanjaro. That explains the area cheif was located at in the Halo 3 teaser. Very barren, and dry. The Sahara or maybe even the Sahel or Savanna since there are trees in the background. The Bible notes that the Arc of the Covenant is so powerful and holy that whoever touches it will instantly be disintegrated. In the Old Testament, in Joshua chapter 6, we have an account of the Israelites defeating the city of Jericho when they came into the Promised Land after wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. The Isrealites' army and their high priests carried the Arc of the Covenant and with this, the Israelites marched around the city once a day for six days, on the seventh day they encircled the city seven times. On the seventh time around, the priests blew the trumpets, the people shouted and the walls fell flat. That explains why Bungie is always talking about the number 777. The Isrealites walked around the city for 7 days, on the 7th day they walked around the city 7 times, and on the 7th round trip the high priests blew trumpets and the people shouted. That explains 777. That may also explain the trumpets in the Halo 3 teaser. Then the wall magically fell down and they won the battle. Whatever army containing the power of the Arc of the Covenant remained invincible as said in the Bible. This may be the arc, the Covenant are looking for.

So therefor my educated guess on what the arc is and where the arc is located is around the middle east or most likely the northeastern/eastern parts of africa. And the arc is The Arc of the Covenant. So basically the covenant have the same god and religion as the forerunners or the humans. *please talk it up, thanks.

Indeed- the Philistines took the Ark once because they thought it had power all its own, and ended up getting tumors, rats, and all kinds of crazy stuff.

the Ark of the Covenant is not just the ten commandments.

According to Biblical references the only other things that are in the Ark of the Covenant are Moses' staff and a piece of mana.

Not sand that if you look at it makes you blow up or your face melt. Or both.

...Aaron's staff, according to the Book of Hebrews.

But you're right, media mis-conceptions suck.
