Okay, so i have this mobo and this PSU powering it. i plug in the mobo through the 24 pin main connector and through the other 4 pin connector. it works fine. then while keeping it on, i plug in the dvd drive, keeps working. then i attempt to plugin this HDD and the power supply just shuts down. what the hell? its a 550w PSU and it cant power the fukin mobo and hdd? this happened to my old PSU too. it might be the HDD, but i tried it with the same HDD only a 120gb version and it shut down too. I cant figure out what the hell to do. i spent over $1200 on this computer and i cant get it to work. and another thing i just thought, i am running this single-core CPU and i have the 20+4 pin main connector and the other 4 pin thing plugged in. you only need the 20 pin plus the other seperate 4 pin thingy plugged in for a single-core cpu. could that be the problem? i apologise for the language, but i have been looking forward to this for 3½ months and now it dosent work. anyway, any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Not exactly enough information, but I will do my best.

When you connect a second HDD, I'm pretty sure it must be a slave HDD. There is a special HDD connector cable, and you have to connect the pin in the correct slot. I can't remember if the master HDD has to have a pin connected. But 0 means the first one..

The power-supply may not be ample, or while you were plugging it in you might have fried some sort of hardware (the HDD, maybe??).

Perhaps the 2nd HDD is just dead. I once had an HDD that just didn't work at all :P

Or you did something wrong :). There are probobly other factors I don't know of, but I did my best :P

Hrm...my first instinct would be to go to a forum that specializes in computers instead of this forum, which is more a forum for tech help concerning HPC.

I think Bapa's provided some pretty good intel there. Take his advice and see what happens.

Ok, let me rephrase my problem. When i connect the HDD to the PSU itshuts down. i have 1 fan, 1 mobo, and 1 dvd drive connected and it works fine, and when i try to connect the HDD to the power, not the mobo, it shuts down, like it cant power it. and i also tried another HDD and it didnt work either. i really want to install windows, but i cant if there isnt a hard drive plugged in.

"it shuts down"

it being the computer or the hard drive?

Ok, be good if people read the post.

Firstly, its not a faulty HDD. If it is, then he has 2 (he said a 120gig version was tried too).

The most logical thing is, its the PSU. A 350W should handle that easy, let alone a 500+.

Im afriad the only thing you can do is testing. You say its a new pc, so I assume you got some old parts.

Swap stuff around. My first try would be the old PSU, see if that does the same. No, scratch that you said it happened with that too.

Hang on. You plug the HDD in while its on?

Leave everything off, dont connect power till you have it all plugged in. Then turn it on. I may have just understood your wording, but you did say when you plug it in it all shuts down.

Unfortunatly, because this forum is so crap and bungie wont ever fix it, none of your links work.

Can you explain what your doing?

Not sure, but it seems your not just trying to start afresh, your using old parts as well.

ok, i tried to turn the pc on when the HDD and the DVD drives were plugged in, it dosent power on. i unplug the 2nd dvd drive and the hdd, powers up fine. while its powered on. i plug in the 1st HDD and it shuts down. i repeat with 2nd HDD and the same thing happens. i am almost at the point of suicide because i spent over $1200 just for it to not work. Damn.

Really does sound like your PSU doesnt have the power. I know, its a 550, but thats looking the most likely solution. It could be faulty and not giving out what it should.

Unless both hard drives have developed the same kind of fault at the same time, it has to be the power supply.

Then again, didnt you say you had the same thing with your old PSU?

One more suggestion. Leave the optical drive disconnected, and just have one hard drive connected. See what happens.

If you can get hold of another hard disk, preferably a different make to the ones you have already, that would be a very good test. Its possible (but unlikely) that those hard drives you have - Im assuming the same make - dont agree with your PSU. Maybe they give out a specofic voltage that it doesnt like.

Highly unlikely, but Im getting stuck for what else to suggest.

Different things to try:

Try another make of hard disk if possible.

Disconnect optical drive from power and try one HDD only.

Make sure your master/slave configurations are set properly.

Try a different PSU.

Looked at the links, and interestingly enough, that power supply seems to be faulty for a number of people.

Let me know what happens when you try that stuff, Im interested to find out what it was.

Hopefully its the PSU, so you can just send it back for a replacement.

The PSU is still my bet for the problem.

OK, i found out the problem. the 1st HDD is i guess just dead. but the 2nd now works. i only plugged in the 20 pin connector to the mobo and the other 4 pin thingy, the 2 optical drives, and the 2nd HDD by way of power supply. and i also plugged in the optical drives and the HDD in to the mobo. turns out the 2nd HDD has windows installed on it. it says windows cannot start successfully, select whatever. i select start normally and it like flashes the loading xp screen and what looks like a BSOD, but it was almost too fast to tell. and the funny thing is my friend gave that HDD, so now he owes me a blank 120gb HDD. I should be up and running within a couple of days now. and thank you guys for all of yoour help, and sorry for my bad instructions.
