Downing dropships would definately work. Maybe not Halo 2, because being able to shoot down every dropship would either mean important characters would die(only to magically respawn at a later point), there would be no point in putting friendlies in if you shot them down, and no enemies to fight.
The concept of shooting down a dropship is feasible. When a dropship goes down, all it has to do is to be free from AI control and let the physics do the rest, provided it can be tweaked to that extent.
But really, to put in dropships that can be shot down-there's only three things:
-Giganitic scale of maps.
-Legions of enemies to fight so there's no way you can keep up with the rate of reinforcements.
-Better AI-namely dropship AI that can cover itself at the same time while offloading its cargo, or land beyond your reach, or escorts keeping you occupied. If enemy dropships land at a random spot each time in a set zone, then there's no way you can expect where the dropship's flying in from. However, one thing that definately needs to be addressed and fixed is the rate of which dropships land. In the heat of battle, dropships are going to come in fast, land quick, and takeoff-or take potshots at you. The whole hovering for five minutes in Halo 2 more or less destroys the intense feeling of actual combat.
