Don't always play BG. It will ruin the TRUE Halo experience. The best levels are the smaller ones (Chill out, Rat Race) and medium sized (Damnation, Hang em High). In all of these, the shotgun is useful in certain situations. It isn't how you use the weapon, it is when. Try carrying the Pistol and a Shotgun, that way you are covering long, medium and short range. If you want practice, play a lot on Chill Out, for it is definitely the best shotgun level out there.

You can't be good at close combat without being awesome at far combat.

yes you can. Why would you have to be good at long range to be good at close range?

Anyway....play small levels, and if you are playing on a big map (blood gulch) than stay in a base so the have to come to you. Get good with the pistol though,so you can win in far range or close range. always duck while in a close range battle, that way when you get close and they fire, you will duck and kill them first.

if you're in a shotgun battle and your opponent just fired the first shot that ook down your sheild and now your going to die with his second shot, know the amount of time between shots for the shotgun and duck right when hes about to fire, his shot will miss and because hes probably charging they'll be close enough to you so that one shotgun shell will kill them, ive done this a few times to my freinds so now close combat is hard to pull off because of these tactics

I'll tell you why not: Let's say you're playing HH, CTF or TS. Everyone spawns at the start, most likely far away from each other. You grab a shotgun and wait until someone gets close so you can blow their head off. Now, if I was playing you, I probably would've seen you and killed you with a pistol before the "Hold BACK for Score" message went away. Let's take another example from HH: You died somehow, and appeared, let's say behind or around the blue base. In order for you to get a shotgun you would have to either drop all the way down by the invisibility, if you were playing TS, or go inside the tunnels, if you were playing TS or CTF. You would probably get the one in the tunnel since that has the most cover. But right when you come out...BAM!!!! Pistolage from who knows where. But this wouldn't have happened if you'd have pulled out your pistol when you spawned, looked around the map for me, and killed me, possibly a couple times, with your FAR COMBAT skills...oh wait...that's right...you don't have any.
So, I'll say it again: In order for someone to be good at close combat they must be awesome at far combat. You can disagree with me all you want, but it won't change the truth.

There is a difference between tactics and skills genius. He wants to get better at using close range weapons, not being good enough to get to the enemy then use close range...wow that went right over your head. HH isn't really a close range level anyways.

al right here is some ecelent advise from someone who has played halo since it came out religiosly fro almost two hours every night with his friends.

no matter what wepon you use always aim for the head (BTW) you can semisnipe with the shotgun because there is a tight knot of bullets in the very center of a shot gun blast that is why its crucial to aim for the head)
swip with the shot gun after you blast them not before.
if you want you can double swipe by pressing the grenade buton after the first swipe then swiope again quickly
also move around alot jump duck etc.
these tactics are pretty common sence but they work

oh and learn how to work on a high sensitivity W/ close range so you can whip around and killem fast

Just learn evasive tactics, such as the 360 degree spin/strafe/duck/jump manuver. (Yes, that was all one tactic.) So that you can get close, and when you do, FIRE AWAY!!

Get good with the pistol so you can deal with long range threats. Then get a shotgun andd get right up close so you can get a body shot so more pellets hit. Shoot before you punch them. Then melee if it doesn't kill them huck a grenade the punch them right after.Duck when you get in close. More tips later

My brain hurts more and more all the time. *Sigh* Listen, obviously, I am not going to use a SG on a large map as my only weapon. On small maps though, I will consistently kill people that are shooting with pistols. I know how to move, and I know how to shoot with a shotgun (forget the head... go for torso shots). And keep moving, including jumps and criss-cross strafing.

Now, if you are on a large map, then I agree. The pistol is the way to go. But even on the larger maps, there are plenty of places where the SG will do me just fine. That's why I usually carry both.

Now... about the disagreeing. My disagreeing with you may not change your jaded view of the truth, but since your "truth" is only the truth in your eyes, that really doesn't matter to me. If you go back and read the original post, you will see that he is asking for advise on close combat, not looking for someone to come in and tell him that close combat isn't important.

Also, I like what KiLLyourTV said. Very nice.

I was answering your question, not the original post. And, I never said close combat isn't important. I said (this is the last time I'm gonna say this): you can't be good at close combat without being awesome at far combat.

"You have to aim above the head, but then a little lower so you actually get it."

-John Mayer

Sneak a frag in, they dont make the room blue, and in combat the enemy never sees them, throw a grenade where they're going, clip off their shield. and boom! of course this hardly ever works on blood gulch or sidewinder... but its good on small maps

Now I am going to a not quite answer you qeustion but give you advice for multiplayer now every weapon has a job you have to be well rounded to exceed what if in multiplayer you have used up all your shells all of the oponents have you in seige the only choice you have is to use a sniper rifle or be stupid and pisto whip every one that is hoding you in seige now you are going to want to your the SR wont you but oh wait you abslutly suck with that weapon well I geuss you are dead in that scenario

i think that close combat with a shotgun isn't as much skill as a medium length with the pistol, i used to always get pissed when i was playing someone and they would kill me really quick with the pistol, 3 shots in the head, so i think that the key to multiplayer is accuracy with the pistol
