M$ is looking ahead of Vista because it's thinking quite differently.
Apparently, Vienna is designed to be sort of like how the GUI was to computers back in the mid 80's...revolutionary, completely radical, and different. I've been hearing sketchy details and reports about it, but as far as is confirmed, it's being made to rethink the way we interact with computers.
What this means can vary...it can mean anything from being able to address your computer and say "I wanna talk with so-and-so," and have the computer answer you, "sure thing, me15ter, let me set one up. Do you want to use AIM or MSN?" It can also, conversely, mean nothing more than a radically redesigned GUI. (As most rumors have it, the Start button is gonna be gone by this time.)
Oh, one final note. All this is hearsay and rumors. Microsoft has passed over it briefly once or twice, but nothing is confirmed. Second, there is actually an OS called Windows Fiji that's rumored to come between Vista and "Vienna." And finally, the first whispers about Vienna were heard around...1999. So you're a bit late to knowing about it. ;)
