ive been playing for few months now, and ive started to notice this; very occasionally while playing i will suddenly get struck down, ive also seen this happen to others, on many different servers. it says eg Cube was killed by the guardians, yet there is no-one in the server with that name. can anyone explain to me what this is?

-S

It's what happens when two people melee kill each other at the exact same time.

The 'guardians' death happens when Halo doesn't know who to account a kill to because of synchronizing errors. Usually this happens when two players melee each other at the same time. Player 1 and 2 melee each other very close to the same time. If player 1 dies first then player 2 gets killed by the guardians.

In your circumstance though your getting killed by guardians and no ones around. This is really rare. I guess it happens more in Halo PC; especially if your have a 56k modem or a really laggy connection. People playing XBC used to complain about this. I've never experienced it though. Basically as player 1 shoots player 2, the game lags for player 2 and in that time player 1 dies. The lag frees up. The game registers the delayed shots on player 2; but since player 1 died a few seconds ago. It doesn't know who to account the kill to. So it gives the 'guardians' the kill.

sorry you misunderstand stood the section i said no-one is on the server with that name,

yes now i think about it, yes it could be melee killing at very close times, but what i cant understand then is how you can melee kill someone and they also do the same to you at the same time, and it gives the correct credit out

Because you'll always be a couple of milliseconds out. Besides, I think both people usually get killed by the Guardians.
