Good idea. Consider it done.

This isn't about join dates, this is about interaction, I could give a crap less about someone's join date, and would love for them to be gone.

I'm sorry if this is off-topic, but you are referring to the join date for B.net right?

I'm asking because I can still see the 'Member Since' dates underneath everyones names.

I think it means that will be removed, rather than already have removed it.

Sorry, I couldn't tell from his post if he had actually changed the code or not. I wouldn't have asked, but I'm running Opera for my web browser and I didn't know if some IE only change had been implemented which I wasn't seeing.

I came here after Halo 2 arrived, and honestly, I have to admit that I myself have probably not contributed too much to making Bungie.net a better place; yes I spend more time here than on Halo 2, but what have I done to make it worthwhile? Not much, personally. Anywho, I guess this is a public apology to Bungie's genuine, lovable community.

I agree with what you say GJJ, and i'd like to see Bungie's community become what you have envisioned/implied it to become/reform to. I'll try not to make it worse, and i'm one of those that wants to change and make this place fun.

I've been around...not much "around" however. @_@
Anyway, I see the issues, part of B.net's set-up can encourage elitism, those who try to "help" make it worse, those who honestly want to help are ignored, and the whole community is degenerating as a whole. But how do we fix it? Remove inactive forums or not very good ones(Flood and New Mombasa perhaps? Don't get me wrong, I loved Mombasa, but..it's so..horrible now). Get rid of chapters(I hope not)? HOW can we make Bungie.net a better community? Members who don't want to/are jerks won't change, and the only way to get rid of them is mass bannination & IP blocking, but unless if all the jerks are eliminated, things won't change, or won't change a whole lot. In my opinion. If anyone can find a way around this or prove me wrong, please, for dear god, do so.

Another one of these threads?

There's been to many of these posts lately. They may be inspiring to many people, but they don't do anything. Instead od talking about actions you can do, go do something to help the 7th and then talk about the actions you DID do to help out.
Spartakus, nothing can be done unless if the community knows the issues and everyone wants to help. So, instead, how about we all do something, then come back and tell all the new people the legends of how we reformed the lost Seventh Column and brought tears to the eyes of the weary mods(Except Shishka, he doesn't have eyes)?

I've got quite a bit to say, so I'll split it into two parts. First, Bungie.

I'd like to point out before I go further that I'm not under any circumstances suggesting that Dmb is a suck-up, I know he's a great guy anyway. I took his statement as refering to Xbox Live, as in we can meet people there. Without contradicting him however, I fully agree with Rip Saw. Bungie owe's us a lot. Without us, their loyal fans, they'd be nothing. They are without doubt the most important game developer on the planet at the moment, but without our constant support and money, they wouldn't mean anything to anyone. I hate it when they forget that (e.g. no screenshots, not even some new angles of the trailer), but I hate it even more when people suck up to them (kids who post, like Rip said, saying Bungie owes us nothing), and there's plenty of the little bastards in this thread already.

As a loyal customer of Bungie, having purchased every action figure up to the latest set, every music CD, every game twice (at full price), and every book (3 novels, Art book and now the HGN), I feel the least they could do for me as a customer is show me a look at what Halo 3 looks like. I understand they can't show the Arbiter, and I understand they want to build up hype (so no pics yet of any vehicles for eg), but something as humble as a Grunt. Or a Multiplayer shot (1 a month). That'd be lovely, and would be a highlight of my year if I'm honest (some people like sport, I like Halo, seeing a screenshot is a highlight no matter how sad you think I am).

Now, I realise that Bungie may be in a position where they must continue their development of the game with secrecy and discetion. However, many weekly updates ago, they had promises of little tid-bits being released to feed our Halo addiction and offer a glimpse as to what they are up to. Aside from the trailer (and a "Making of" trailer which basically only confirms the Shotgun), there has been nothing. The website is dry as a bone months after the trailer was released and the weekly updates tell us nothing besides "We're remodelling the Warthog, it looks nice". I feel it is in Bungie's best interest to give us something to speculate over, other than crackpot theories. It would also make me think a lot more highly about Bungie as a 'company that looks after it's customers' as well, as recent events have left me in serious doubt.

Wow. I agree with you almost totaly.

This is likely to be inflammatory, and I want to apologize in advance:
Bungie, we have to know - do you give a crap anymore?
I've seen a site where the developers were frequent posters, especially Frankie back in the day, where the people had amazing groups that were amazing because they didn't try to be.

I've seen that site degenerate, I've seen over-commercialization of an intellectual property. Yes, some of that stuff is very cool, but do we need a movie? A Comic Book Series? Are we going to do a machinima show on Adult Swim next? When is enough enough? I don't mind these things, actually, it's the thought process behind it. You seem to have ignored the fans that kept Bungie Lore alive in their hearts, in favor of the cash cow of the daytrippers. Making money is forgiveable, even encouraged! I would love for you to have more money to expand and develop. But to do it at the expense of a core fanbase is not considerate.
Halo 3, great, I'm all for it. But remember that we are not walking wallets. We have feelings, and most of them are benevolent to Bungie's interests. Don't forget us in your search for money.

I don't see how Bungie's creation of comic books and a movie has anything to do with the decrease in community personality. The forums have been getting less interesting for me long before a movie or comic book. Bungie's job in the community is the creation of video games. It's the video games that bring us together. The movie, comic books, etc. is content created for the community. More stuff to bring us together.

I agree with the rest of the stuff you said. If the community is going downhill it is our fault. If anyone can do anything for it is us. I'm not sure what to do about it. I'm not even sure anything can be done about it. I've tried to start threads that don't fit the normal profile for a flood thread in the flood and they just get pushed off the page for lack of interest. I can't force people to be interested in anything but "What's your favorite color?" threads. This leads to a feeling being powerless and frustration. That's what I hear mostly in this thread. So is there really anything we can do about it?

Then again a lot of it looks like forum politics. People call each other elitists. Others feel like they're being left out because of their join date. Arguments between groups, drama from wikipedia, member counts, ... yuk.

Liez. MBT most certainly does not play a role in all of Bungie. In fact, I could care less about MBT. Not in a mean way, but I just don't find it very appealing. I'm happy that people enjoy it, but it doesn't really do much for me.

Wether you like it or not it does. Just because your not involved with it doesn't mean it doesn't.

Don't put yourself on a gold pedestal there. Yeah, you have 1500 members, so what? I don't really find the group interesting at all.

I don't put myself on a gold pedestal. The same applies for the other large groups too they all play a role in bungie wether you like it or not. Popular Fusion, Prominent Communique, ODST Recon, Games in Action all play a role.
Say what? I don't see how these groups affect Bungie.net except outside of the Chapters themselves. If they bring it to the public forums, it's exterminated quickly, it only affects Bungie when you choose to make it affect Bungie.

One would assume so, but when the group members are PMing people with 15 posts that are all the same, or publically attacking each other, it DOES become our problem.

I love how even though no one mentions MBT, GH always seems to find a way to say "I'm number one, i am better than all of you."

True, but then, it comes right back down to the members who choose to be inconsiderate jerks. How does one eliminate that issue?

In my case I would remove the offending member from my group, thus depriving him of any more group activities, as well as removing his reason for spamming.

Sadly some people are more worried about member counts than doing their part.

Yes, that is true. In that sense, the leader would be a corrupt one, and his group would only be harming the community even more. One could delete the group however, but it only brings up more problems; sadly. From the magnitude of the members, I doubt you could get rid of them all, the only idea I could come up with is giving those kind a people a swift kick to the crotch and give them the BanHammer, but there probably are a lot, so that becomes even more difficult. However, the leader might not be aware of this member.

I think I might be rambling now. Can someone give me a check on that?

But this is completely irrelevant to the issue at hand. That seems more like an advertisement or bragging, rather than participating in this discussion.

Don't thank me for the search engine. While I have been trying to find the proper time to devote to it for a long time, I never could, there was always something more important. However, we were able to find a new web developer to work with me, and his first project (his way of learning bungie.net's code) was to implement a search feature (since it would have to touch every aspect of the site to be any good).

As I said... change is happening right before you. First was hiring KP to do more regular content. Second was hiring a new full time web dev to work with me. Third... well, stick around. ;)

Achronos and the mods do a good job, and there have been and will be improvements to this site. There are positive things happening here and there are interesting groups out there. For whatever their faults, the big groups do have some interesting content and many of them are quite active. I am sorry that some members have gotten out of hand. Furthermore, I do think the level of discussion in the Septagon is noteworthy. Posts are more intelligent and there is less flaming here.
