I agree with what you say GameJunkieJim. I also think the Gallery should be revived and I like the idea of fan art and especially with Halo 3 coming there should be a place where Halo 3 fan art can be posted without spamming the Halo 3 forum. As for groups I think it is silly just to strive for member count when it infringes your ability to control the group, with new members, responsibility goes up the same is true for bungie.net. I would also not mind seeing some activity in the theme and/or avatar department seeing as the wide range of talents all of the members have to offer and the Theme Masters group having no value or goal in the community all good themes and avatars go to waste.

I understand what you mean GameJunkieJim, but I dont think the process is reversible. Basically what you want is the pre-hotness days. When there wern't half as many members and everyone just sat around all day discussing Pics of Halo 2 or discussing something. We can't go back to those days because we are simply to watered down with users. I visit this forum everyday, and yet I still I find myself seeing someone post, and being like wow, I've never seen this person in my entire life, and they'd been a member for a year. Basically B.net used to be like one big group, everyone knew everyone basically, now its lost is personality. No longer do I see a post and be like, oh this is gonna be a good one,or wow I bet this is gonna be stupid, because I've never that person post before then. And its not like we can go back to where we came from, we cant just get rid of members.

It just seems like people have lost the point in playing video games.

That would be nice.

Voting Booth
* Official Contests, or Unofficial runned by members and approved by the Master Ninjas

Gallery
* Random pics, like the webcam but of actual employees and the randomness that occurs at Bungie

* Screenshots of you know what

Actually, it wasn't discussing bits and pieces of little things like rabid fans, although that might have very well have happened, I think what GJJ wants, is for it to go back to where everyone was friendly, helpful, and the Column was a fun place to come to, as in general for all of Bungie.net. Of course, it's impossible to get rid of all the inconsiderate members, but at least we can try to change this community, instead of sitting here and complaining about how it won't work.

I tend to do that.

But on topic, I don't think it'd be too hard to add a new poll or two to the voting booth.

It's funny that you brought this is, Jim. Usually, I'm on this site all the time when I'm on line. But today, I was on the computer for hours, and I didn't even think about coming here. Even when I was completely bored, with nothing to do. I just didn't really have any motivation to come here. It seems like recently, all I have to look forward to is more of the same. Having said that...

It's nice to see that some things are going to be happening with this site. Now I can't wait to see what kind of new stuff we could be seeing.

As for community involvement, we were just talking about KP doing some more things around the site. Specifically, updating the Voting Booth and The Gallery, along with some other things. (Most of you probably already know this, but some may not.) That thread seems to have died, but I don't think the ideas did. Hopefully something will come of it.

So apparently there is hope on Bungie's end. But I think we all know that the members need to help, too. Personally, I think I'm going to try to become more involved, so I can do my part. But I was thinking. Besides what's already been said, are there any ideas for what the members can do to help the community? I'm not so good with coming up with ideas, but I guess I'll give it a shot.

EDIT: Yeah, I know I'm a little late coming to this thread. But ten pages takes a while to catch up.

I think being less hostile would help loads. I've stopped flaming users making stupid topics or repeat topics, and have tried a more peaceful, and kind approach. It's helped alot more, rather than starting a flame war, which would create more work and benefit the community less.

I have nothing to add except that I agree with every word of this.

ditto.

Double ditto.

Sorry for being 11 pages too late. That's what happens when I mostly stay in The Flood.

But I remember when there was a really tight community here. I remember looking forward to coming to The Flood everyday because there were always good topics going on, and there were a lot of quality members to interact with. Now, most of them have been turned off of B.net by the massive influx of newer members who pay little heed to forum rules or are almost completely lacking in any kind of friendly, social attitude whatsoever. Heck, I remember when New Mombasa was a great place to kick back and engage in worthwhile discussions about every little bit of the upcoming Halo 2. Then I saw it slowly turn to flame-fests and pages of practically the same topic.

I definitely know I'm not alone when I wish for the "good ol' days," even though I'm still relatively "new" here by most standards.

I remember when I first joined b.net(can't believe it's been 2 years now) I joined wanting to just find info on my favorite game, Halo, I came across something else, a community of gamers who had the same interests as me. B.net has changed ever since i joined, it used to be a cool place for me to come check out Halo 2 theroies and maybe read the flood topics. Nowadays i've stopped coming here, I stopped coming when I noticed the trend in the Halo 3 forums was to "bash the other guy because he has an idea", when I joined a fan site of a video game I never expected to see "ur idea suks noob gtfo" I expected to see "Wow man I don't agree with your idea but I respect you for sharing".But this obviously isn't happening anytime soon and I think other peaople need to realize this too.

That's my exact story as well...

Very Bitter

I missed a large portion of time here on Bungie.net (losing my original account and gamertag just after Halo 2), and upon my return I discovered that the community had decayed, but I'll stick around with hopes that it will get better...

I've been here for about a year (with my other account), but let's get straight to the point...

I agree with what GameJunkieJim said about the fact that the community aspect of Bungie.net is going rapidly downhill, such as how neat little topics such as fan fiction (which serves as a little debate) are drowned out by overwhelming spam.

I am not sure how to fix it but moderating is a key stepping stone in it. You can't really change jerks, but if you wanted to keep them from coming back, why not do something with the .NET passport (since it is almost required to log in and access features)?

I hate people who suck-up to the Moderators/Admins, because they themselves want to become one. Look a few post above me on this page (reference Christmas..). In my humble opinion, It's them type of people that are ruining the community as well as the immature ones. People view them as being 'respectful, happy chappies', where as they're nothing more as little suck-ups who think that by engraciating themselves with admins etc, they'll either be selected as one or find out 'secrets'. I could go on, but the majority of people who know me, know what I mean. Those little bastards who copy Achronos's unique way of quoting people (answer first, then quote). But what causes that? It's the fact they more often than not get rewarded for it. Good members who are more trust-worthy and who contribute a heck of a lot of good stuff are left side-lined for people who basically just kiss arse. I've always hated it, I hate it now, and the community won't be the same until all this 'elitism' (which it is), is stamped out.

I'm a "suck-up?" Well excuse me for being happy for a search feature. I'm sorry you don't like my jay(still don't know why), but a suck-up? Please. What on earth would sucking up to achronos and the mods possibly gain me? Nothing. Waste of time. I don't do it. So don't of accuse me of something I didn't do. I try to help. I try to be kind. But it's not too suck-up. It's just tryin to be a good person. You might want to give it a try sometime. That is if your pride will allow you to help someone even with the fear someone thinks you're "sucking up."

I have posted that I never want to become a mod. I am thankful for the mods here because it would be worse without them. I do not think the mods are perfect. They are flawed human beings just like the rest of us. However, they put up with a lot of whining and they help.

Woah, how is that ass kissing? All Cortana and Kilroy pretty much said is that they're thankful that Achronos is doing these things.

MY XBOX DIED THAT'S WHY.

I'm a little late to the party on this one but after having read all eleven pages - O_O
all I really have to say is that I'm looking forward to the changes that this thread has started among the members and the ones that Achronos has been working on.

;)

Oh, and I'll try to be as good as member as I can be, too. :P

Please don't start to use the thread to advertise.

I'll be on my own side.

This thread makes me happy, although I don't think we'll ever be able to have our old community back. Too many members have left because of the surge of retards Halo 2 attracted. I think Shai, Barron, and myself are pretty much the only members from before 2004 that still post, not counting moderators/ex-mods. I miss the days of hours on end of discussing theories with Eagle, and actually talking about interesting and intelligent, yet off topic things in the Flood.

I found myself staying away from the Septagon and Underground because they started to get flooded with crap, and eventually, the forums as a whole. I know that this forum is supposed to be the most moderated, and no offense to those mods who do keep an eye on it, but it seems like too much crap is getting by. I know that it's a forum dedicated to the community, but do we really need a ton of posts asking about moderators? As of this posting, there are 6 topics about ninjas, two of which are nearly identical.

I'm glad to see the join date being hidden. It's not nearly as important as hiding the post counter was a while back, but it's still a good idea.

The one thing that pisses me off about these forums is how we can't actually say anything positive to the mods or admin without being said that we're kissing ass. I know that if I were to have to moderate these forums, especially the Flood and Halo 3, it would be a hell of a job. The guys who have to wade through the sea of crap that people produce should be given a damn medal for patience. The only thing that seems to be acceptable to say to the mods is "OMG y did u bant mi?!"

I agree to a certain extent with what Jay says, but not everyone is a kiss ass. I do notice that people who genuinely contribute to the forums are getting shunned by those who play forum cop and congratulate the moderators for every ban and/or locked topic.

Seems like B.net has been stagnating for a while now, but I see good things on the horizon ^_^

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I don't think it's so much that we actually want a pre-hotness community again. We know that's not possible... But I think it is possible for things to be communized on a greater level. Maybe everyone won't know everyone else, but at least we'll could have something we all relate to and contribute to... I can honestly say that I have no clue how to go about taking steps to accomplish this greater community. But I think that once it gets large enough, people will see it and either join, or leave.

Perhaps I'm being a bit too much of an idealist, here... but I still think it's possible. The 7th Column rebirth ideas are good... But the 7th Column was flawed such that it could never survive with such a large amount of people on this site. It's "death," so to speak, couldn't be helped. Bringing it back won't help. We need something new that can bring the majority of the site together. Once people start collecting into this newer community, those that haven't will see that it's becoming the entire site, and will either be "forced" to join (for lack of a better term), or they won't be interested, and they'll leave. That's somewhat how the pre-hotness days were. People either connected with the community and stayed, or they didn't and they left (of course there were those that didn't and stayed (spammers, trolls, flamers), but they either matured and stopped spamming after a time, or they were chewed off the site by other members).

Getting rid of some of the forums will do that, I think... Two that come to mind would be The Flood and Optimatch (nothing against those that go there or the topics that pop up... I just think the two forums are unnecessary, and tend to shard people away from the rest of the site). Hell, what would happen if we collectivized all three Halo forums into one General forum about anything that's Halo (1, 2, or 3)?
