Quite frankly, that is the most useless garbage I’ve seen anyone post. Bungie.net wasn’t given to the fans by Bungie, BUNGIE was given itself by the fans. I see people say Bungie owes us nothing all the time, most of the people saying this are mods defending this company. Bungie owes us nothing, really? Talk about profits, Bungie owes us their money, jobs, their livelihood. Come to think of it, they owe their fans EVERYTHING don’t they? Where’s the fan appreciation? Where’s Sketchfactor making a post saying “Thanks guys, for buying our games and shwag and supporting us so that we can do what we love and make great games”? Where are the fanfests that cost Bungie money but show the appreciation for the ones who gave Bungie that money in the first place? Bungie doesn’t need the fans anymore, but without the fans, they’d go bankrupt. Granted they may not need the fans of just this site, but it’s safe to say we’re their biggest fans. If there’s any community they should be concerned about, it’s this one. I’m not ungrateful for what is a wonderful site, but I’ve never been to a fanfest dammit, I feel cheated.
I don't think you understood the point I was making and I can understand why. Jim seemed to get my point, but I had already mentioned to him earlier that I agreed with him completely and he must have understood the implied "I guess Bungie decided to say 'Screw you' to the fans". Do you see what I meant by my post now? I know implying has consequences when what is implied is not properly inferred, but I figured people would understand. Sorry for the miscommunication.

And by the way, I completely agree with everything you had mentioned.

Bungie gets payed to make games, which we buy, which gives them money to make games. Sure, we don't need Baseball, or Bungie, but we want it, and they want to give it. But take what Achronos said at Face Value.

Bungie is Busy
They are working hard to get you the game you want. They produced a comic book, because they thought you wanted it. They are busy. As much as we would like them to post they are working on Halo 3. For several hours a day. who would want to do som, ething for hours, and then go check this site to see people making ridiculous, crackpot, poorly structured theories about it. It would be frustrating and boring.

I would say the blame lies squarely at the door of Halo 2. Yep, that's right. It is a game for the masses; and the masses picked it up and loved it, and dropped by bungie.net to say so. There seems to be no discerning quality to the community and the game. I haven't been around a long time, but when I hear that this place was different a while back I think it's obvious what happened. Bungie is part of Microsoft, and expansion is the only way forward. And this is where expansion leads. You can have a tight-knit community of thousands. But you can't have a tight-knit community of hundreds of thousands. Bungie, whether they meant to or not, asked for this community.

Care is infectious. You make a few people care, and it spreads.

Care is what we need here.

Nice thread Jim. Some of the main problems with the site comes simply from Bungies customer base and the games they produce. Problems on the site are very much the same as problems online.

What we have is a community like you have pointed out that always seems in competition with each other. Two years ago I joined this site and found it to be one of, if not the greatest gaming site there was. I soon joined a group and quickly developed a respect and appreciation for what Bungie was trying to do. I stay away from groups now and must say that I'm completely sick of getting PMs asking me to join. The first group I ever joined knew what it was all about (Snipetrators).

In some respects people like me (yes I complain about Halo 2 or rather used to quite vocally) have been the biggest problem with the community. It took along time for me to realise that I was helping destroy the very community I professed to love. If I could take back my actions now I would.

It would be bad for a time, but then it would die out once the spammers realize that they're not going to be given any eyes.

If it were to happen, things would be bad for a few weeks, then over a month or so after that it would lessen quite a bit, in my beliefs.

I don't think it's so much that we actually want a pre-hotness community again. We know that's not possible... But I think it is possible for things to be communized on a greater level. Maybe everyone won't know everyone else, but at least we'll could have something we all relate to and contribute to... I can honestly say that I have no clue how to go about taking steps to accomplish this greater community. But I think that once it gets large enough, people will see it and either join, or leave.

Perhaps I'm being a bit too much of an idealist, here... but I still think it's possible. The 7th Column rebirth ideas are good... But the 7th Column was flawed such that it could never survive with such a large amount of people on this site. It's "death," so to speak, couldn't be helped. Bringing it back won't help. We need something new that can bring the majority of the site together. Once people start collecting into this newer community, those that haven't will see that it's becoming the entire site, and will either be "forced" to join (for lack of a better term), or they won't be interested, and they'll leave. That's somewhat how the pre-hotness days were. People either connected with the community and stayed, or they didn't and they left (of course there were those that didn't and stayed (spammers, trolls, flamers), but they either matured and stopped spamming after a time, or they were chewed off the site by other members).

Getting rid of some of the forums will do that, I think... Two that come to mind would be The Flood and Optimatch (nothing against those that go there or the topics that pop up... I just think the two forums are unnecessary, and tend to shard people away from the rest of the site). Hell, what would happen if we collectivized all three Halo forums into one General forum about anything that's Halo (1, 2, or 3)?

lol. in your first paragraph, when you said "comunized," I thought you said "But I think it is possible for things to be communist on a greater level." lol

But anywho. I agree....to a certain extent. I do think that all Halo 1 and Halo 2 forums should be combined. Leave the Halo 3 Forum as is. I think the Flood needs to be replaced by something else. I don't know what to call it. But it would be a forum dedicated to intelligent, off-topic posts. It would be heavily moderated and "spam" would encompass much more than it does in the current flood. Get what I mean anyone?

Klroy, if we merged forums, nothing would be off-topic, and i wouldn't have a reason to visit HFCS anymore.

And I do love those visits.

The real root of the problem is- we ae all complaining about the problem. I really just don't see what's so bad about bungie.net. Sure there are pointless threads here- but I don't see any of you complainers making goods ones. Threads on B.net are three things;
1.Flood- off topic
2.moderators
3.Halo 3 theories.

Maybe, instead of complianing, you should bring some discussion to the table.
Go post in the Halo 3 forum, visit optimatch. Bring sensibility to the Flood. the problem isn't the new members. It's the old ones We are the ones who holed our selves up in groups and the septagon, and ran from any sight of new members. How are they supposed to learn with no one there to guide them? It's high time we leave our Ivory Tower, get of our high horse and go interact with these people. They aren't that bad, some of them even look up to you, and want to be like you. Nut they can't do that if all you do is complain about them. so I say;

Stop this stupid crying over the "dead" 7th column and go out. Have fun, or have you forgotten how? Stop crying about new members, stop making fun of the Halo 3 forum. Go be a part of the community you used to love. It's still there, as whole as ever. And it's waiting for you.

Gosh I hope some of you read this.

True, as the other forums are moderated more than The Flood. All the stupid posts like "Flood role call lol!" wouldn't last as long as they do now, in a more laid back forum.

There would be an outcry from all the self-appointed rulers of the Flood, though. The Septagon would be swamped. Of course, they have their groups for off topic crap, but they'll still complain that their "home" has been removed.

Optimatch should remain how it is. The only reason it's so bad is because Ninja is pretty much the only mod in there most of the time. It's not as bad as Zanzibar was.

Dmbfan, might agree with you on that. I however do not. One, dmbfan is a pushover ( =P ) and two:

You're right, Bungie wouldn't be anywhere without the fans. Alternatively, the fans wouldn't be fans without Bungies work first. When Bungie first became a company, they had no fans. No one giving them money, it came from them. Where were the fans then? Who was supporting them, giving them money? No one, it came out of the pockets of Bungie themselves.

That's the fickle thing about fans. Fans, are fans only after a group has created something and not before. So, I don't believe your perception of fan appreciation domination is realistic by any standard. The opposite extreme is not completely true either.

It is a balance, a co-appreciation and understanding between the company and the consumer. So, next time you get on your moral high horse and begin bashing a company for however much (of anything) they give you, remember you are part of a bigger balance.

You wouldn't be a fan without them, they wouldn't be successful without you .

Take things with a grain of salt.

I think that applies here.

It's not as simple as that. Sure, Bungie makes their games. It's their job. But they also hire people to make this website for a reason. It's for us, not for them! Why make a community-based website if you don't care about your fans? Part of what Jim and dmbfan are saying is that Bungie doesn't seem to care enough anymore. Sure, they make this website, but where's their interaction with the fans? Where's the new informations? People don't really join this site just to see a bunch of other random people, they join to get first-hand information on upcoming developments and to see how cool this company really is.

Now I know Bungie is busy, and I know full well that coding things, no matter how seemingly simplistic, can take a really long time. But like Rip Saw said... what are they without their fans? To me, it always seemed like Bungie wanted their a respectful community as their fans. To me, that's why the site was created in the first place. But now it just seems like Bungie isn't caring as much as it used to be, and for that matter, the community is starting to shed off in splinter factions, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

I'm not asking Bungie for anything for my sake. I'm not selfish... But I do remember a time where you could see Bungie employees actually interact with the fans. I'm sure Jim, Barron, Tex Mex Matt, and Rip Saw (to name a few) remember how frequently Matt Soell used to post before he left (I apologize if I spelled his name wrong. My member isn't that great). SketchFactor also did the same shortly after the new hotness launched.

And where's the updates? Frankie's Weekly Updates are nice to read. They're light-hearted and often funny... but they don't tell us anything.

I will, however, admit that there's not a complete lack of interaction between Bungie and the fans. The Halo Humpday Challenges are a fantastic idea, and it's great to see that they've returned to a more weekly thing. And the formal introductions to new staff members are nice, as well. But I just think there needs to be more in order to bring the community back together, if Bungie, as well as the fans, want it that way.

I'll be on my own side.

Shai, Frankie can't really reveal much in his updates anymore. Broken promises and all that jazz.

There's plenty of Bungie employees that have B.net accounts, but don't interact with us on the forums. Take this fellow for example. When was the last time you saw him post? What about people like bentllama and Kuniklo? They're employees, but they never post on the forums. They stick to private chapters, which is understandable, but it would be nice to see them post once in a while, just to talk to their fans.

It would be great to see some of the employees come to the forums just to talk to us once in a while. It would help establish a stronger connection between Bungie and its fans. Sure, it sounds corny, but it would be nice.

Maybe there could be times when Bungie guys and gals could set up sessions in Halo 2 and other games to play with their fans? Maybe a new forum like the News or Classifieds for just this purpose?

If they posted in the main forums most people would be more interested in:

"teh heylow pisstall chood b teh smea as helow 1!!!!1"

Or

"can u put <insert idea here> into halo 3 pleeze?"

Or any number of other things which are downright annoying. Some Halo2Sucks.com junkies around, some idea-ers, theorists, all manner of crazy-ass things on this forum pertaining to Bungie would; instead of being appointed toward the community in hopes of being heard by Bungie, would now be directed directly at members of Bungie. Something, that I am sure none of them want, need, or care to divulge in.

You're right though, it could make the community stronger, and more tight nit. At what cost to the persons at hand, though? They have things to work on (and already troll the forums), I highly doubt they have the time required or the patience to indulge everyone who has something to say, suggest, or complain about to them.

I never said I could blame them for not posting. I understand that they're busy, but they have breaks every so often I'm sure. You're right baout the people flooding them with ideas for Halo 3, but KP posts doesn't he? Sure, he's just a cabin boy, but he works at Bungie, which means that people could just as easily swamp him with ideas as they can Evil Otto or anyone else. And I don't think KP gets too many of those. I'm sure it happens, but probably not much.

This thread right here would be perfect for the employees to interact with their fans. A calm discussion, nothing about Halo 1 pistols or Hang em High or anything like that. I wouldn't expect them to go into New Mombasa and start posting. I would imagine they'd stick to the Septagon.

Sure, you'd get the jerks who thinks his opinion is shared by everyone else and for that matter will be listened to by Bungie, but there are enough more mature people here to tell people like that not to ask such things. Over time, their presence will either change to something more mature, or they'll leave the site. Everything takes time... it can't just change overnight.

I understand completely why many employees post more in groups or on fan-sites than on the main forums here.

I only have to think of one member in The Underground who was on a vendetta to "straighten out" Robt McLees for his (so-called) "crimes against humanity/Halo" on behalf the Halo community that the member had appointed himself as spokesperson.

If Robt had posted even a calm and rational response, compare the mayhem that would have ensued (as the member was not rational by any stretch) to the friendly banter and civil discussions that take place on some of the calm and well-mannered fan-sites throughout the community.

If we (the members) here on Bungie.Net are not welcoming "hosts", how can we expect reasonable people to want to come and voluntarily subject themselves to the onslaught of attacks?

Just look at the "discussion" in The News after anything is posted on the front page by Frankie, KP, Sketch or Achronos. I don't think that I have seen a single thread make it to page 2 before someone says/does something blacklistable and/or says "what a suck ass update!" (even when it wasn't an update)

Marty and the other employees tend to interact in their own groups because they can simply and easily deal with the rudeness and hostility that people (emboldened by Internet anonymity) feel they are somehow entitled to display.

My view on the core problem here? The fact that a member account is disposable and easily recreate-able thing. If we each could only have "one shot" at being a member of this site, I think that our membership would be (on the whole) much more civil and mature. But because there is no hard-link between an account and a person, the noisy and rude members of this community are encouraged to "keep trying" rather than "think before they act".

Just my view.

IP banning might help that somewhat. I'm pretty sure Bungie doesn't use IP banning right now, but instead even if you are permabanned, you can just.. uh.. well, it doesn't matter, but you can get around it still. I wouldn't how someone (at least easily and quickly) could get around an IP ban.

Very easily for anyone with dialup.

Recon, I do understand what you mean. However, there are the private forums. Take the Kuniklo Project. That's the only place he posts. And it's pretty rare. But at least it's something. Why can't more Bungie employees do at least this? What could it cost them minus a few minutes every week posting in their little chapter?

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

In ways, I agree with you, Recon. I'm sure Bungie employees have better things to do than to be on the site all day posting replies to random fans. Bungie is their job, but I know it's not their life. I'm sure they want to get away from their work after they're on it for 8 or more hours per day. They have every reason to.

I apologize if my tone in my arguments implied that it's Bungie's fault that the site is the way it is. That's not what my argument is. I'm saying that if people want things to be more of a community, like me, then it would help if there were more Bungie-fan interaction on the main forums.

Note the word help. I know full well that Bungie-fan interaction isn't the only answer. Much of it is the fanbase's fault, as well. I've been here for a long while. I've seen some of the worst posts to ever hit this site, whether they be on-topic or not. I also know that yes, we'll get large amounts of -blam!-s, some like the person who had it in for Rob McLees, some who are just arrogant enough to think that just because they dislike a certain weapon in Halo 2 online, Bungie should change it. This is why it's not just Bungie's lack of interaction that led to the splintering of the community, and why if only Bungie were to step in and interact more, it wouldn't work. If we want this place to be a bit more tight-knit (which many of you seem to want), even with the large number of fans (and more to come with Halo 3), then it needs to be a group effort. More people need to act as unofficial moderators to give advice/slap down those who ignorantly post what's inappropriate and stupid, and more moderators to actually lock threads (not necessarily at the moment). We also need more community-community interaction. For example, have XBL, XBC, or LAN game arrangements between more community members. Off the top of my head... Mods vs. Flood (for those of them who are able, since I know that some are busy)? It doesn't have to be them, it's just an example.

If such a thing is actually impossible, then we'll just have to forget about ideas like the 7th Column, and accept the fact that this will therefor always be a splintered community.

Is this just about Bungie.net? Is this not about Bungie as a whole? Because the state of bungie.net is not just a random function of the people who join up.....

Read about the Forgotten Spartan I Program
Butane: To protect the world from devastation!
sir_brilliant: To unite all people within our nation!
Rainman89: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
sir_brilliant: To extend out reach to the stars above!
SpaceGhostFlyer: Jessie!
Butane: James!
sir_brilliant: Team Rocket blasting off at the speed of light
Butane: Surrender now or prepare to fight
sir_brilliant: Meowth, that's right!

I think anywhere you are going to go you will get that. as much as no one would really like this...

How about an invite only forum. Not a group, a new forum, one that you have to gain acsess to. even if it's just time spent here. THat could be the reward of the karma system. Once you get enough then you are allowed acsess to the invite-olny forum, where it would now be safe for Bungie employees to meet with rational fans without the jerks. I know a lot of peoplewouldn't like the idea, and see it as elitist, but it would help keep us happy. Something to strive for, a reason to be active and helpful.
