like, ohmygawd, I like, didn't get flamed!

I think the replys are proof that there are still thinking members out there, even in the Halo 3 forum, and that is a reason to fix the community.

I remember....Way back befor Halo2. These forums were great. Not much spam, flaming, or fighting. I liked it here. Now, I kinda avoid these forums. I just post at other websites Halo boards. (MLGpro, H2s.com, Gamespot, and others.) Then when the launch for Halo2 was coming up, everyone was all excited, we all talked about how cool it would be to dual weild, be able to board vehicles....And explore the Halo storyline. The same thing has happened to Xbox Live. You can't go 5 games of matchmaking without being standbyed, modded, yellled at, or cursed. Even I have misbehaved some here...Even some of the mods have. Why would you ban someone for saying, "I wish there was more Halo3 info in that update?" Well, anyways...I hope the B.net community gets back on its feet. I know, my account says I have only been here since 2005 but I had another account, named wickedmasta and forgot the password but that isn't important. I hate to go into certine forums and see the whole page filled up with, "OMG NeW Ch3aT111?!!!?!" And things of that sort.

Wow....what a wake up call.
Its like Camerlengos final speech in Angels and Demons.

*looks back at personal values*

I have been noticing this, There is nothing more to talk about I used to spend all my time in Zanzibar and New Mombasa, never in the flood. But now i spend all my time in the flood. I am happy that SonicJohn has fired up our curiosity in the skulls again.

I don't post too much anymore, but when I saw this thread I became intrested. I joined back in 03 and things were much different then. When you were a member of one of the Seventh Columns, it meant something. Most of the people on the forum acted responsibly. Name calling, flaming, and spaming were almost non-existant.

New members can pretend that things are just the same as always, but they are not. I admire GameJunkieJim for making a stand and trying to make a difference. He is right, its time for people to act more responisbly and make this community into something we can be proud of. I actually believe tha GJJ cares more about Bungie and this community, then probably half of the employees at Bungie do. Don't take this the wrong way, for many of them its a job, for people like GJJ its more of a way of life and a person that loves what they are doing will always do a better job of it.

People that cut their teeth on Halo CE told their friends about it, and those friends told other friends, they had LANs, they joined together in one big Halo community. A lot of them started Chapters, I know I did. Many of them reguarded Halo as more than just a game. It was something that brought them together with good friends to have fun.

I glad to see members that joined about the same time as I did. It means we are still around and still care. The rest is up to Bungie.

Wow I sure wish I had seen this thread earlier. I would have agreed sooner with almost everything that has been said so far.

Honestly though, I am not really huge into the chapters or groups. I even gave #moap a whirl for a few days but nothing really became of it. The bottom line; even the casual users are feeling the effects of 'the changing forum'.

Specifically all this random hate/flaming/spamming that is going around. Sure we got that awesome new batch of Forum Ninjas, but even still, the constant garbage floating around the forum is going to wear down the regular users... and to some extent even the casual users.

You know I think that right there is the solution. Only I fear that too many people would rather take advantage of internet anonymity and goof around. Why I don't know, but I guess once you hit a certain population on a forum, you are bound to start bringing in the dolts by the hundreds.

Well said GJJ. The bungie fanbase is the problem. There is a critical mass of immature people who just fuel each other's idiocy. And when someone new joins, they see how things are, and join in. I think it is no coincidence that Halo 2 on xbox live is an exact mirror of the situation here.

Bungie listens to its fans! ^.^ | Ninja .II./ You
RCG: In ur base, steelin' ur flagz. | Watch the demo, then join the carnage!

16 pages in two days.

The community is still here, still active. Maybe we've just... run out of things to talk about. Too many groups, too much seperation... To increase the closeness of the community, reduce the number of groups people can be in to like, three. =P

#moap etc. is always active, no matter the time of day... I don't know. I guess I just miss the interaction form actual Bungie -employees-.

And I for one like the join dates... If someone's joined on the day you look at them, and they're replying to a thread, there's a very real possibility that it's a second account etc... Ah, it'll still be in the profile. Right?

I wanna say something about Bungie selling out.

HGN was not a sell out in my opinion. Why? Because it hardly ever showed the MC. Only once as a cameo. The stories also had things that only true fans could understand in them. If it was just a comic book of Halo 2 then I would agree with you GJJ.

The movie however seems a little more on the sell-out side. However, if they spend more time on it and make it the first video game movie that doesn't suck, then you'll see that they were not just trying to make a quick billion.

Ok im on my second day on the forums but I've been apart of the above top secret forums for avaition for a long time and been very active. I signed up yesterday to join a group of people that like bungie and their work and the halo series seeing as ive been playing it as long as most of you guys ie a couple months after it came out. I can say that i find the amount of "kids" a lil annoying (that or adults that act like em). I've found it hard to have an actual good convo with someone yet and I'm wondering if I should have even bothered to sign up because im starting to think anything I bring forward will be flamed etc etc. Im worried like the rest of you because if someone wants to leave a forum after one day there si a problem. why am i still here? cause i love the game like the rest of you guys

I haven't been around since the Golden Days that everyone seems to revere (i.e. before the Halo 2 release date), so I'm not sure what it was like before. During my time here, however, I've kept the total number of threads posted to a single-digit count? Why, you may ask? Because I fear that I'll be flamed, spammed, etc.

I admit that back whenever I first joined the place was a lot better; New Mombasa was a place of plot discussion, speculation and fan fiction, which has now degraded into a stagnant mire of "I r bettar dan j00 n00bs!1" threads. I had little experience of The Flood; I only really started posting there around October last year, and only regularly since about February. Even I've noticed, however, that The Flood has also started to degrade.

It's like what Iceman said in the first page: we are the community, and we need to get our acts together if we want to make this place interesting again.

Those are my thoughts, for what they account for.

Fight hard, break bones >{o

i like how there are dozens of pages on how you agree with him, but you guys waste so much time by posting here at all. im not the leader of any big group, i dont even have very high positions as i simply want to post and nothing more. but to everyone who is here agreeing you are worthless. why not go change the site? leave the posting to people who have actual contribution instead of "here here". you are simply making this thread less valuable by posting at all! no one is going to read any of these posts save the first and MAYBE the last. get over yourselves and post where you can make a difference instead of wasting your breathe and trying to suck up to those with power.

From the 7th Column Council Thread:
Posted by: Mabian
Posted by: Nedus
I'm inclined to agree with Shai here. There's been a "decline of personality", as he states that's been around since the announcement of Halo 2.

I'm not exactly sure what that is supposed to mean. That the majority of members don't partake in certain discussions? I'm lost...

No, I don't think that's what he meant.

Let me see if I can explain it from my point of view and air out some of the dirty laundry we have here.

We're languishing, and have been for some time now. I'll tell you my story, even though I'm a fairly young member here compared to some who lie in the shadows, wanting to stay but desparately looking for a reason to.

One reason is people. At the risk of promoting an elitist attitude, when I joined the Seventh Column chapters were designed around local gamer groups, designed around setting up LAN parties and contests, and a few larger groups that focused on bringing the entire Column together in central hubs, themed groups that dealt with a certain aspect of Bungie.net and the Seventh Column as a whole. However there has been an influx of people who never had a 'breaking in' period, who missed the point of the Column.

The groups started being about how many members you could get, rather than how decent the group managed it's niche. Way back whenever, the groups were good for something helpful, and one was so helpful, it got recast as a main forum section (The Septagon you're in now). Now the groups actually have become a problem, and a constant source of annoyance and spam for many.
Mjolnir Battle Tactics, for example, spammed the Wikipedia page for Bungie.net with group advertisements, Popular Fusion and they have this inane "Group War" going on, and people actually have "Do not send me group invites" in their signatures. This is retroactive for the column, and both of those groups are causing more harm than I care to see.

They've missed the point. Terribly.

I've gotten so jaded over these things that I've probably passed on several decent groups because I don't wanna be caught up in a mad bid for members. They don't care any longer about providing for the community, they care about being better than the rest of it, and that's the worst kind of elitism.

Seventh Column Council, great idea, horrible execution. Too many people wanted power over the site that they didn't need.

What do we need? Less concentration on silly things like Stat Tracking and whatnot. Yes, the Game Viewer is cool, but how does that help the Column? The most common useage I've seen for it is to brag about how good you are, or how bad someone else is. *yawn* I don't give a -blam!- how good you are. That's not why I'm here. We have MLG for hardcore stat mongers. Bungie.net is where I meet people for a friendly game. Where I discuss the finer points of the Easter Eggs, and theorize on the storylines of the games. It's where I come to check up on my friends, and see what's going on with Bungie.

Now I sit in the Underground and lament that people have gotten so selfish. People who completely crap on others for no other reason than liking another Bungie game more than Halo, or going into the Halo 3 Forum and seeing 400 replies to a topic berating the post starter for an idea or theory. Guess what, all ideas are equally valid, yours or the next guy's.

Look at Bungie.net's reputation on multiple gaming sites. It's frustrating for me especially, and I imagine others, because when we came here it wasn't like this at all. People were somewhat respectful, and even the spammers were on topic for the forum they posted in.

Look at yourself Bungie.net. You've gone from a tight knit gaming community to a mass of spam topics, elitism, and random hate. The forum used to be well moderated with only 5 or 6 moderators. Now we have close to 15 and we're still losing ground. It had to be said.

I long for the days where SketchFactor actually updates the 7thColumn page regularly. Or even the Council Idea would work if it could get people that weren't so worried about controlling aspects of the site.

This is likely to be inflammatory, and I want to apologize in advance:
Bungie, we have to know - do you give a crap anymore?
I've seen a site where the developers were frequent posters, especially Frankie back in the day, where the people had amazing groups that were amazing because they didn't try to be.

I've seen that site degenerate, I've seen over-commercialization of an intellectual property. Yes, some of that stuff is very cool, but do we need a movie? A Comic Book Series? Are we going to do a machinima show on Adult Swim next? When is enough enough? I don't mind these things, actually, it's the thought process behind it. You seem to have ignored the fans that kept Bungie Lore alive in their hearts, in favor of the cash cow of the daytrippers. Making money is forgiveable, even encouraged! I would love for you to have more money to expand and develop. But to do it at the expense of a core fanbase is not considerate.
Halo 3, great, I'm all for it. But remember that we are not walking wallets. We have feelings, and most of them are benevolent to Bungie's interests. Don't forget us in your search for money.

My brief history at Bungie.net was setting up a group for my clan down in Florida, meeting a few people, having a blast with the various stories and activities in the Off Topic forum, working out theories on Halo 2 in New Mombasa with Eagle and chaplain and Wra7h, among others, talking with various people around the 7th Column and forging friendships.
The personality of the forums is dying, and I want to do something about it. But it's gonna take a lot more than a Council. It's going to take employee interaction, and a vast willingness of the members to change for the better.

I sincerely apologize for any personal offense anyone takes, and do not wish to lose my status here as it helps me do a little good for the forums, but your decisions are your own.

For small interesting companies being owned by a large corporation can squeeze the life out of them.

But It could be worse, imagine if it was EA.

Thank you for your attention Achronos. I know this is a sensitive subject for many.

And Guardian Hunter, I'm not saying you can control those members, but in a very real sense, those members speak for you. It's the same as if the guy at McDonalds punched someone in the nose, or if the UPS guy tears up my package. Your members are a representation of your group. When they act bad, you look bad.
So if a guy punched someone in the nose at McDonalds and you heard about it on the news would you never go to McDonalds again?...That's not the best analogy. I can not control my members when they are not on MBT's forum just like the McDonalds corporation cannot control there employees punching someone in the nose at a McDonalds.

No, but the employee would be fired, and McDonalds would get a bad rep.

Anyways, I agree with Jim and the many others...and it's sad that this thread has turned out to be off-topic and just a flame war, after so many great posts and ideas.
