Excellent idea.
I've got a few things to do now but I'll be back later today. I'll try to spare a few moments to think a little about how we, the community, might start to make some kind of difference.
That's all I think everybody wants. That, and Shishka to admit he can't aim.
Anyways,
BBS ;)

Look at yourself Bungie.net. You've gone from a tight knit gaming community to a mass of spam topics, elitism, and random hate. The forum used to be well moderated with only 5 or 6 moderators. Now we have close to 15 and we're still losing ground. It had to be said
Well, I did spend some time thinking on the topic and it's probably less than surprising that my thoughts have come to... nothing much. I've quoted GJJ here because I think what he has said in the above statement is a very important part of why it's unlikely things will change.
Bungie has opened the flood-gates somewhat with Halo 2. What I mean to say is that this particular games popularity, design and accessibility for, in particular, many younger people, has clearly had direct implications for the Bungie.net community.
That is, above all other things, the reason I believe a mature and truly welcoming community on Bungie.net is a lost cause. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's not worthwhile posting here or having a browse around. What I'm saying is that the primary behaviour on display is unlikely to attract the mature gamer/fan and, as such, the mature gamer/fan will likely end up going elsewhere. GameJunkieJim, I don't think anything is going to change that.
There are other problems on these forums as well. For instance, elitism is not just displayed by those making groups and the like. In fact, more than anything else, it's that which has really brought a sour taste to my mouth as a Bungie fan.
I'm going to be honest here. I'm a 29 yr old married guy with a family, occupation and more than enough responsibility. When I decide I appreciate a game/work of art so much that I want to share that enthusiasm with a community I expect to be treated as an adult. Now, it's one thing when I am publicly insulted or 'pwned' by a young, socially immature child. It's quite another thing when I feel I am being chastised by those whom I actually hold in very high regard... or to be more accurate their official representatives.
Of course, that's only a sense of being chastised.
Whatever the case one might not stray too far from the truth if they suggest that problems have emerged from a variety of different areas....some more regrettable than others.
Still, after all is said and done, I retain the perhaps foolish hope that there is some way to improve this sorry state of affairs so we can make a community on Bungie.net that is vibrant and fun to be around. All I can actually do is what GJJ recommended.... participate.
I'll keep hanging in...
For now.
